So where's the funding coming from...... same as The Sands in Carlisle....loans? ..If so they have to be serviced by Councils who are so "cash strapped" they have to rely on volunteers to clean up litter apparently.

At the moment the new stadium will be used for pub football and part time egg chasing.
Along with a couple of games in the egg chasing World Cup: that’s it.
I’m all for it however surely you can see the views from people against it.

I must have missed the bit where the sands were signing Sellafield up to rent office space to pay the majority of the costs.

Wasn't aimed at you DB.
I was confronted by a bloke last week that voted for MJ as a protest as he didn't like Mark Fryer. He was whinging that he didn't realise that MJ wasn't entirely in favour of the stadium even though he and his colleagues and many independents consistently referred to it as an expensive vanity project throughout their campaigns. He was 'gutted' at the prospect of Allerdale losing the World Cup and Reds/Town losing out on a new stadium and he genuinely wondered out loud if he could change his vote...
The trouble with local elections is that relatively small number of people can seriously affect the eventual outcomes. Given that this is potentially the 'big ticket' issue in Allerdale for the next four years then if people wanted it they should have voted for the party proposing it. If they didn't want it they should have voted for parties against it. If they didn't vote they don't deserve to complain either way.
Many people used their local vote to voice displeasure over Brexit. This is what can happen to local decision making when that happens on a single issue. 21 independent councillors will be like herding cats in terms of policy and decision making and Allerdale will have this hiatus every time a major decision needs to be made.
To be honest nobody can really complain about the Independent/Conservative collation if they pull the plug - they have a decision making mandate from the people of Allerdale after all.

Just read in the FT today that there is 12.5 trillion dollars of negative yielding debt in the market.German 10 year bonds yield negative 0.29pc which means you are paying them to lose money.
What does this mean?It means it’s never been a better time for the Workington stadium proposal to be financed as put forward as long term money is incredibly cheap.

Disgraceful decision. Deputy leader Mark Jenkinsons said it was a 95 million PFI deal. No mention of the current low interest rate. I walked out of the meeting in disgust. We could have done with your knowledge in there today Andrew. A once in a lifetime golden opportunity wasted. I'm gutted.

As I said, no plan B and a once in lifetime opportunity missed.They would claw a lot of the value back through the World Cup exposure to West Cumbria but forget that-the long term benefits were enormous for the community as a whole.
I wonder what assets the Council are buying using their balance sheet?Northumberland CC bought a shopping centre in Cramlington for £70m about 4 years ago-I reckon it’s probably halved in value since.

Sad to say it but I agree Mark-some of that lot making the decisions won’t have been over the other side of the M6 and seen the outside world.

I’ve no idea how many Workington rugby gets, I haven’t checked, but I’m guessing it’s not much more than a thousand.
Then you have Workington reds. I don’t think they have had a crowd over 1000 for a while and now at pub league level.
These are the things councillors think about. If it’ll be used long term. Maybe there was a plan for more investment for reds if the stadium was a goer but if no one knows about it.
I think reds may go under now, which is a shame but as you say no plan B.

Exactly my point.It wouldn’t be just a stadium for the few-for the whole community and a real asset to the area, a real focus for improvement and change.An investment in everyone’s future.
Saying no basically sends a poor message-we can’t afford it,can’t be bothered, doesn’t matter.Well it does actually and over decades, the ‘cost’ will disappear into the ether.Im sure the Romans didn’t worry about the cost of the Colosseum 2000 years after it was built.

Narrow minded idiots I would say!! I was in Whitehaven yesterday and looking over the harbour that was full of yachts and also on the sea it was actually looking good, they are spending a bit on money round the area and looked Marrapolitan

Surely it would come at a price of a fraction of the millions you were planning to invest at Brunton Park?

I’m playing devils advocate here and thinking of the councillors one eyed view.
What will be the long term benefit of it?
The councillors will look at Darlington - they always look at negatives - and say it’ll be a white elephant, won’t benefit the community etc.
Again I’m for it but you need as many arguments to persuade these councillors.

Darlington is such a bad example to compare Workington too!! that was never going to work, its all about ambition a great example is Forrest Green population circa 6000 and they get good crowds, Ross county in Scotland is the same they often get 4000+ and the same population 6000ish WHY? West Cumbria is missing a trick by not developing a new stadium if they were successful and got into the football league and played Carlisle it would be 8000 sell out week in week out FACT

Darlington is a terrible example/built by old safe cracker himself.25k seater but nothing around it.This stadium would be surrounded by commerce but could easily be scaled back to 5k seats I assume.Saying it would cost Xm over a long period misses the point-£1 in 1970 is worth SFA today

Will west Cumbrias loss be Carlisles gain? Strike while the iron is hot and take advantage of their dithering. My hopes aren't high.
I was at the Etihad complex yesterday at man city. Our school hire a facility got sports day. 5 other schools were there. New builds are springing up all around. Offices, housing, shops, transport links, pubs etc. I'm no fan of city but this huge complex has rejuvenated miles platting and surrounding area which is and always has been a complete dump.
Carlisle could go for a great sports village with all the assets to go with that. Or they could think small, revamp a sports centre and pool, continue to undervalue the city and its historical and aesthetic beauty and continue to kick the place in the teeth and under estimate the city. The council is useless and does not serve the city or its population. Never has.
We could and should have so much to be proud of but our council do their best to serve no one.
I feel for those in west Cumbria. This was a great opportunity and it is unlikely to happen again any time soon.

A multi use sports village with running facilities and the likes of an ice rink with offices shops, restaurants and amusements is the way forward. MK sadly lost the plot but if A J had been in charge all the time we would still have the scratching pen.

As for Mullen’s view that only 10pc would use it-based on what?At this juncture, there is no facility and that’s where this will end up.
This was a clever way of financing something which would act as a catalyst for regeneration, community and sport generally.

I based it on the fact that in the last census the population of Workington was just over 25k and both teams struggle to even get 1000 there, that’s less than 10%.
I’m struggling to understand the community benefit.
In a time where there’s cuts to adult social care, bin collecting, bus routes and youth services does Workington really need an 8k stadium funded by tax payers. I’d say no based on current evidence.
However I am for it, but there’s no evidence of it’s community benefit, long term jobs. These are the things councillors look at.

Well my grandma never once visited Brunton or Derwent Parks but she always used to listen to Radio Cumbria of a Saturday and Sunday afternoons commentaries. My dad does the same now he can’t go anymore. Plenty people are interested even if they can’t make it through the turnstiles. No money in that for the tories though so why bother. That said I don’t think it should be a choice between that and adult services either.
As for long term jobs the office space that was gonna be provided would certainly see more money spent in the local shops. 200 people who now eat in the canteens at sellafield would put a few quid into the economy.

It is wrong to compare today's crowds against what the potential is. Workington RL used to get 10k plus regularly and a record crowd of over 20k.

The councillors who voted against this should hang their heads in shame. It would've been something positive for the town and crowds would've risen for both sports once it was built as most clubs throughout the land have done.

Sometimes you have to invest to reap the reward.I remember when they built Hampden all those years ago-stewards enquiry into the cost at the time but it’s still there.If the £50m has been spent elsewhere, it would be long gone-pissed away on ‘supporting’ services .Of course to replace Hampden now you would be looking at 3x the original cost.
