BBC Cumbria Sport tweeted this about 7.30 this morning: CARLISLE: Club close to completing their eighth summer signing this week, BBCRC Sport understands.

They've recently also tweeted:

CURLE: 'We're speaking to another player today and we probably need another three of four after that'.

Not sure if that means he reckons he's signing this one today, but hopefully he seems pretty confident.

I hope he keeps a similar caliber of player, seemed to panic last year into signing Osei and Thompson.

Would McQueen count as an 8th signing?

Not to me, he'd be a contract extension or re-signing.

If new contracts were classed as "signings" then Tom Miller would have been the 8th signing yesterday.

Richard Chaplow has just cancelled his contract at Doncaster, Feel he would be a very useful signing, could play anywhere across midfield/wing.

We don't seem to have signed any exotic sounding overseas players yet, so my money is on one of those

Assume Curle will try to bring in 4 or so on ,loan. Gillesphey and Gillead he said he wanted back then at least 2 others, Luke Hendrie was York's best defender last season so he might be an idea

They missed out the part that Bury have knocked it back but should he not get in the first team reckoning Keith is interested. so there will be nothing on this till late august or january i would have thought.

According to the N&S; the chances of Gilead coming back are slim, with Benitez wanting him to play in L1. But a half decent chance of getting Gillesphey back,

Gillesphey is 20, He hasn't got long to develop into a Championship player. likely to be back in the prem next year. Loaning him out to a league two side would be pointless for both Newcastle and Gilesphey, especially where he is likely to sit on the bench most of the time.

20 is still very young espically for a centre back , teams have 23 years olds in there reserves still,

If he was to join us again for the next year, he would be back up choice for most of the time, I think 20 is quite late for the lad considering where he is in his decelopment, he needs his career to develop quickly if he wants a future at newcastle, for me he needs to go to a league 1 side and play week in week out, then next summer a 21 year old who has 40 odd games at league 1 puts him in a much better position, make or break year i think for him.

If he'd be backup with us, given our notoriously dodgy defence, which League 1 team is going to play him week in week out?

That was my thought as well when I read it. I doubt either Newcastle loanee are good enough or consistent enough to play at that level regularly.

I thought Gillesphey looked good at centre back when he played. Curle has to strengthen the defence somehow. We look good going forward now, shame to ruin it by letting in stupid goals at the back

Surprised that there's not been anyone in this week. Hoped we would have more or less a full squad in place so they could hit the ground running come the season start.

How do you add a picture on this? Just seen James Phillips tweet about the team at Cassius Camps having a 'press up off' and in the middle of the picture there's a player I don't recognise, could be the new signing? Either that or he's a trialist, you lot who've got Twitter have a deek and see what you think, can't say I recognise him

There's two 'players' without those vests on. The lad you see, and the lad second from right. Indicates possible Trialist's? As our players all got their own best on return to training...
