Well it doesn't look that way....

22-03-2025 The Guardian:

Russia’s recession-hit economy has propelled the country’s poverty rate to a nine-year high, state statistics showed, as the country struggles to cope with a crippling economic crisis.

An average of 19.2 million Russians – or 13.4% of the population – were living last year on less than 9,452 roubles ($139) a month, the minimum subsistence level determined by the Russian government in the fourth quarter.

This figure represents a 20% increase year-on-year, with an average 16.1 million people living below the poverty threshold in 2014.

More Russians have been slipping into poverty on the back of the Western sanctions and low oil prices that have battered the country’s energy-dependent economy and significantly diminished purchasing power.

What I find utterly bizarre is that we have a thread where the whole story arc is that the press tell lies, Northumberland with his ÂŁ4300 pa, Moorlad as well. And yet as soon as you see an article on Russia you naturally assume that it is correct. The sanctions have hurt some people in some ways. Imports have increased in price, as the article hints most things can be found but they come through Kazakhstan or Belarus so add 20%. For certain sectors it has been a huge boost, agriculture for example has been revitalised. So overall they haven't been good but not to the level you might think, not as bad as Latvia for example where GDP has crashed. What has hurt Russia more has been the collapse of the oil price.

In your enthusiasm to shot down the Russians you also haven't address the issue of Government spending. The Tories have spent ÂŁ77m building flood defences in Latvia and ÂŁ0 in Cumbria. That means come December we can plan to watch home games again in Morecambe, Blackpool and anywhere else where we can find a home. As David Cameron said, there will be a war of we come out of Europe, Putin could be coming for you already! And you think he is right?

The press tells the truth until it says something that you don't like, at which points they have started lying. The 42% higher number of hate crimes reported in the second half of June 2016 compared to the same period in 2015? All a lie.

Depends how it's spun though loser. Some papers will lead with it and have it as a disgraceful consequence of what Farage was saying, and will have you believe all leave voters are racist maniacs. Others would print it on page 15 and say it is because Muslims want to ban Christmas.

The truth lies somewhere in between.

For the others who are now wishing they had voted to stay in because of what is now happening well it's to late , you will have to suffer like the rest of us.
It does annoy me that I have now to pay 14 percent more for my holiday to Greece in 3 weeks, that's over ÂŁ300 ,It does annoy me that I will shortly have to pay around ÂŁ50 a ,a month more for my petrol and it does frustrate me that I cannot see any real benefit long or short term.

But 14% higher than what ?

At its peak it was said to be 10% up on its real value in expectation of a REMAIN vote. So if thats the figure youve used its really only 4% down

But that sounds like one hell of a holiday you have booked there

As for the petrol price rise it was already on an upward spiral so it may be difficult to work how much is down to that and how much is down to the dollar exchange rate.
Two weeks ago the exchange rate I could have got was 1.31 Euros to the Pound it's now 1.15 that's 160 euro less per ÂŁ1000.

About 2 months ago i got 1.185 when buying some Euros. If you could have got such a great rate why didnt you?
Thursday 23rd June , rate 1.31 euros to the pound , I didn't expect us to vote out or I certainly would have bought.then,

you knew you were going on holiday and you knew the Euro was trading at it's highest for a long time, why didn't you buy? I would have bought bucket load, incidentally, I bought at E1.25. ive a few hundred left if you want them at E1.20 ;-)

Agree with Markovich a lot on what he says about Russia
What helped us win the second world war, as well as America entering, was what the Russians did on the Eastern Front. Remember they we were on the same side as us against the Germans.

Russia was communist so was the natural enemy of the West. What is China?
The argument goes if Russia is the big enemy then we need a nuclear deterrent and large armed forces. A needs to an end with regards to 'defence'.

Oh, and who recently sent a British astronaut (Tim Peake) into space, was it the Americans?

Russia is just a convenient handle to hang our defence budget on.

I also prefer Russians to Americans but that doesn't mean that one day Putin's tanks won't roll into the Baltic States.
We've just committed a further 650 ground troops to Estonia and Poland as part of our NATO commitment. NATO clearly believes Putin is a threat and I'd agree with them. I don't think it is a question of if but when. The Baltic States have significant Russian minorities and ethnic populations depleted by migration. Putin is going to have fun teasing NATO with military exercises and airspace incursions. Big question is whether NATO's Article 5 will hold if one of the Baltics is invaded or more probably when all three are. With only the UK in the EU maintaining the 2% of GDP spending on defence and us not forming part of a European Army, Putin may feel that the EU/NATO response will be that defending the Baltics is not worth the candle.

The EU can probably cope with Brexit but losing the Baltic States to Putin's tanks could be disastrous.

As part of our NATO commitment? Where in our Nato membership agreement does it say we have to provide these troops? How many troops will be German, Italian, Spanish or French? Where is their NATO commitment? Nope, just us and the US.

This is a voluntary agreement whereby we are providing military support to countries who have agreed to economic sanctions against Russia. And what the Daily Express is not telling you Is that there is a very generous aid package along with it (in addition to their right to supply us with cheap dairy products which is bankrupting our Cumbrian dairy farmers). Cameron in his role of Obama’s arse puppet is spending British tax payer’s money on political support for the US (in addition to the £100m spent in Latvia on bloody flood defences). The US spend more on its military than the next 12 countries combined, NATO has 10 times the number of troops and weapons that Russia has. Saying you are concerned about Russia invading is like saying Mourinho’s biggest fear in the FA Cup next year is meeting Carlisle. Russia is so far behind in numbers and technology that they would never invade- see the link below.

When people’s homes are destroyed in Carlisle next year and we have 400 mile round trips to home games we can be happy in the knowledge that Cameron and the Tories have made a decision that spending money on Polish infrastructure is more important than the Carlisle flood defences. We have the highest military spend of any country in Europe, maybe we could not send these troops and make British people's homes safe and dry?

Not saying russia today is a piece of putin pr crap with an acid-head's grip of reality (but it is), but why in that graphic don't they mention the tens of thousands of ivan sailors and troops stationed in kaliningrad (the red bit north of poland)?

In the US the army pays $20bn a year for air conditioning in Afghanistan and Iraq alone. At the same time Americans are dying of toothache.
www.npr.org/2011/06/25/137414737/among-t...-in-air-conditioning
abcnews.go.com/Health/insurance-24-year-...he/story?id=14438171

Why does Obama permit this? Because the quid pro quo is that the war companies make huge donations to the Democratic Party and keep them in power. Cameron is simply replicating this process with the Tories so people in Carlisle can have annual wildfowl festivals in their living rooms but we must have troops in Poland of all places.

To perpetuate the myth the Daily Mail flip flops between the threat of Isis/ Al Qaeda/ Bin Laden (or whichever evil we have funded last) and Russia which has no ability or desire to invade. Spending money on armies is then presented in articles whereby we have a Nato commitment (which Cameron made voluntarily).

Here is comedian John Stewart talking about the benefits of education against military spending, very funny and topical. The ending though is the best part, Americans are now so poorly educated the army is complaining they can't use military weapons

Marko, I was referring to NATO commitments based on this telegraph article. The actual NATO commitments are classified so even if I had access to them I couldn't post the details. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/07/brit...rces-deterring-puti/

Putin is promoting Russian nationalism rather than communism. This puts the US in a difficult position. Does the US care about the Baltics? Probably not. Is the rest of the EU prepared to fight to defend the Baltics. Almost certainly not. Are there logistical problems in EU forces preventing a Putin invasion. Yes. Would the rest of Europe be threatened by Putin if he was to occupy the Baltics. Almost certainly not. I think the risk of him invading Poland is small as the US would take notice and there is no Russian population in Poland.

Irrespective of the inequality of forces between NATO and Russia, Putin's interest in the Baltics is currently top of the NATO agenda and apart from token increases in troops posted in Estonia and Poland NATO is struggling to offer much of a deterrent.

Yes, CW, the language is very bullish, our troops will deter Putin's aggression! Hm, really, 650 soldiers? Because Putin has done what?

Would Putin like the Baltics, probably, the sea is a big issue for Russia and the Baltics have ports that ships can use 365 days a year. Will he invade, never in my lifetime. When I was working there they went to test the nuclear response equipment and the phones they need to launch missiles were engaged because staff were using them for personal phone calls. RT can sabre rattle all day, the entire air force was grounded at one time because so many planes fell out the sky and they have a team permanently stationed in India repairing the planes the Indians bought because the quality is so poor. He simply would not be stupid enough to invade.

We have 15000 people affected by flooding, lets spend a wee bit cash helping them rather than on more guns and bombs that have no purpose

Most of the U.K. housebuilders and suppliers are down anything between 15 and 40% post Brexit.
The country has been down rated by the credit agencies, some international companies and banks are putting any further UK investment on hold and numbers of businesses are putting pay rises on hold and recruitment on freeze.
Oh and the currency down 10% so far.
Nice work Farage, Boris and Gove and those who believed their rubbish and accused those who pointed out the risks as scaremongers.
Stop being such a bedwetter.... even the most anti-european brexit campaigner knew there will be short term pain post decision... it is purely caused by uncertainty... once the plan becomes clear and negotiations take place then it will all calm down. Our economy is still fundamentally strong... that won't change in the medium term.

This is a long term project.... it is to give this country the opportunity to trade with the world.... it will take time to do those deals though. Interestingly several countries have already contacted us stating that they want to begin negotiation asap. Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Canada, and India.... the Speaker of the House of representatives in the US has urged America to begin trade negotiations asap. The problem is these things never get reported on the TV and in most media as they were massively pro-EU during the campaign, with a few exceptions. For example, the BBC led with a story of Easyjet moving staff to Europe... this was massively misleading as they made it sound like thousands would have to move... in reality it is just the legal office that will move so that they are technically seen as being based in the EU... we are talking about a handful of jobs. At the same time Huawei confirmed that they will still go ahead with their 1.3 billion pound investment in the UK despite the brexit vote...not even a mention on the BBC.

Although there has been an impact to currency that really isn't such a bad thing... yes your two weeks in Benidorm may cost you an extra 50 quid but in the grand scheme of things that isn't much of an issue. The massive positive is that our exports are now more competitive which will drive export sales.

Pretty much everybody who voted leave knew there would be a few years of slower growth and that it will take us time to negotiate a new deal with the EU and set up deals with other economies around the world.... but the longer term benefits are huge. WE get to make our own legal and political decisions, we get to make business easier by removing huge amounts of red tape, we have the freedom to set our own taxation levels, we get to trade with some massive markets that we would never be able to sell to in the EU, we get to continue having our own armed services that can be deployed in the interests of this country, we get to control the numbers and skill levels of migrants entering the country,.... a bit of short term pain is well worth that for me. Others may disagree. This is a time for us to hold our nerve as a country and ensure we get the negotiated deal with the EU that we want... because one thing is absolutely certain, the EU can't afford not to do a deal, and the longer we wait without triggering article 50 the more the pressure comes on their governments... cracks are already beginning to appear and the powerful German car industry is already becoming a big influencer on Merkle. She needs to do a deal for her own political future, with an election looming in Germany in the not too distant future. Personally I don't give a toss that the housing market is down a bit.... the price of houses is ridiculous in this country and we could do with a fall in house prices to allow young people to get access to the housing market.

Excellent post my friend. I am only a few years from retirement and if I was selfish would have voted remain in order to consolidate my meagre pension. However, my children and grandchild are my main priorities and therefore I am immensely proud to have voted to leave the horribly corrupt dictatorship that is the EU. We will reap the benefits of this historic vote in the next five, ten or twenty years. We are a free nation again, be proud.

Markovich, have you ever thought that Russia might be a threat to us or our long standing allies, like Poland? It's not like they haven't got form for invading nearby countries is it?

So you voted leave knowing they could not deliver their promises or even do anything? Just out of mild interest, what did you expect to happen then? All the page long posts about new trade deals, if Boris could not negotiate them then who? Feck it lets just wing it and see what happens, with the lives of 60m people at stake? Jesus Christ man, really?

Who has Russia invaded? South Ossetia, Syria and Novorossiya, they were invited into all of them by the local parliaments. Poland, the Baltics during the last war, invited into all of them. Afghanistan ok, but there are British troops there and they were never invited either. Britain also has Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sierra Leone and Mali, all active duty and all invasion forces. Britain is currently much more aggressive than Russia. And where does destroying the Cumbrian dairy industry help to protect my poor old mum from the evil bolshies? So you think it is more important to build flood defences in Latvia than in Carlisle. Maybe want to reflect on that during the 400m round trip drive to a hime game from Northumberland. Especially the fact that one mortar and the things are rendered useless
Sorry Markovich, I've been busy and didn't have the chance to reply.

I voted to leave the EU.... that's it... I didn't vote for any promises or plan... just to leave the EU. That was what the referendum was for. It wasn't a general election where you get a detailed manifesto to study. All we got were half baked promises from both sides. What Britain looks like outside the EU is down to National government... those governments will change over time and the policies and plans will change over time. Do you really think that the leave party would put forward a plan and that we would follow that plan for the next 50 years or something? How could they possibly put a plan in place when they were from different parties and had no power to implement a plan? Your argument doesn't make much sense. People voted to leave the EU as they feel that the country would be a better outside that corrupt, backward, inward looking, protectionist, bureaucratic nightmare that the EU has become... that's all. We now get to vote on what life outside the EU looks like every 5 years.

With regard to Russia, you have a far greater knowledge of Russia than I do so I won't pretend to know the intricacies of the situation. What I would say is that your justification for Russia's current actions is very similar to those of 1938 Germany.... they are only going in to protect the German ethnic population in that country.... sounds familiar doesn't it? If you had been around in 1939 you probably would have been arguing against war then... Now the situation with Russia may in reality be very different but you can see why the Baltics won't take their word for it and why NATO are getting involved.

Your points on the flood defences are pretty valid. But to be fair Carlisle had brand new flood defences, they just never anticipated that water levels would reach those extremes. A big rethink is need on flooding in this country, including re-routing rivers and dredging.;

I think also the situation now with particularly Latvia and Lithuania is very different from when these countries joined NATO. If their own young people don't want to live there why would other countries want to risk their armed forces protecting the depopulated countries from Putin. Of course Putin wants access to the Baltic ports like Ventspils and Klaipeda. The only reason Putin is backing Assad in Syria is because of Russia's need for its port facility in Tartus. There is also the Kaliningrad situation which Putin wants to link up with rest of Russia.

I see RT the official mouthpiece for the Russian government is trying to divert attention away from this issue by talking about NATO wanting to establish a Black Sea fleet. That is about as likely as a South China Sea fleet. For a start NATO doesn't have the resources and what strategic interest does it have there? Protecting Constanta? Protecting cruise ships visiting Crimea or going up the Dnieper? Of course not. No wonder Marko you lose perspective if you waste time reading the RT website.

Russia Today is biased but no more than the Daily Telegraph. The DT was fined ÂŁ30000 in January for telling subscribers to vote Tory, so not much bias there then huh!!

Nato has invited Georgia to join. Georgia which is not in the north and not near the Atlantic so Nato is pushing ahead with enlargement- or surrounding Russia if you want the RT take on it.

Gorbachev was promised when Germany reunited that Nato would not spread east of Poland. That promise was broken when the Americans stationed troops in Ukraine. When Putin complained about broken promises Rasmussen told him the promise was never made. Jack Matlock the US Ambassador to Russia in 1990 then issued a statement confirming that the promise was made. If Nato is going to lie to the world why would Russia trust them? And if Britain is stationing troops along Russia's border who is the aggressor? Of course of they are just building flood defences then there is no aggression, but why is Latvia getting flood defences and not Carlisle?

You have kids. If there is a war will you send them?

In other news, you can add Leadsom to the list of names of leavers (Johnson, Farage) without the backbone to actually...you know....help us leave.
Or maybe it's that lot who are the "bewdwetters"? ;)

Or maybe the Conservative party are trying to avoid the the turmoil that is engulfing the Labour party currently. It isn't ideal if your leader has the support of the grass roots but not that of the parliamentary party. Leadsom's decision avoids weeks of infighting, creates an opportunity for earlier stability, and might actually bring the party together after a particularly damaging referendum campaign. I'm not sure if it was planned that way but the end result is that the Conservative party will come out of this far stronger than the Labour party, who are on the verge of imploding. If we see Leadsom getting a decent cabinet post then that might suggest a deal has been done. Expect May to be approved by the 1922 committee and the result will be a new PM sooner rather than later, which will help stabilise the markets, avoid any calls for another election and speed up our exit from the EU. The Tories will be laughing their heads off at Corbyn and Eagles and the growing chasm between the two sides of the Labour party.

Dreamland.

People complaining that we need to leave because the EU is undemocratic, have left the country with a PM chosen by less than 200 people, who isn't really that keen on leaving.

"Avoid any calls for another election"?! Hilarious!

Shambolic form the right. As ever.

lol. I'll admit to being on the wind up their Deeks... I knew you'd never be able to resist. ;)

But the reality is that their won't be an early election, similar to when Gordon Brown took over the Labour party... unless Labour really do implode and the Tories know they are going to win.... which would be a big risk. As for democracy... yep the leadership election will seem to have been a bit of a fudge... it stinks of a deal being struck. But at least you get to vote them out in a few years, rather than in 40 years time ...

Edited to add: My real view is that it's a bit of a disgrace that even the Conservative party members will have no say in the new PM. It smacks of the Parliamentary party trying to force their more EU friendly option into power over a true Brexiter. If I was a Conservative party member, which will never happen, then I'd be well pee'd off with this development, particularly if I had been a leave voter. The whole party leadership contest should be re-opened in my view.

Got a mate who has done one of the counts in Manchester, he's hoping for another GE soon, easy money he reckons!

Labour will demand a GE but after Brown failed to go to the country they haven't got a leg to stand on really, even though that would be the right thing to do probably.
Is election fatigue a real thing? Oh and I don't think May did a deal - I think they both knew who was going to win.

I don't think that was a foregone conclusion with the wider membership base... had it just been the Parliamentary party then yes May would win.... but the grass roots members tend to be much more anti-EU. Not sure about it being a deal though... after Leadsom put her foot in it the press were after her big time. There won't be an election... which will probably be for the best generally as it would just create more instability and you could get a really daft result given the emotions around the Brexit vote. It gives Labour a few years to sort themselves out and become a credible opposition again... and probably avoids UKIP getting huge numbers of seats on the back of fears that we may go back on the decision to leave the EU. That could never be a good thing for the country.

Er, if the bases were drawn to scale you wouldn't see them would you? . They make them bigger so you can see them clearly,

And Riga, where the soldiers will be, is 120 miles from the Russian border. 120 is less than thousands just to make that clear

The truth is Leadsom's arse fell out, she couldn't handle the pressure from the press and knew her past would be raked over. She must be the only person in the world who thinks it was a great thing to be a leading banker during that particular crisis.

This isn't that much like the Blair/Brown thing or the Wilson/Callaghan one or even the Thatcher/Major one. This is entirely different on the back of the EU vote. But like it or not, those other three are precedents and with loathsome pulling out, May will be tory leader, and quite rightly Prime Minister.

Okay.... so tell us in miles how far each of the bases highlighted on the map is from the Russian border then? You were talking about the bases.... now you switch it to where some soldiers are because you know that I'm right and the bases highlighted on the map are nowhere near the border Hilarious. You are like a politician trying to avoid the question and twisting it to meet your own agenda. If this isn't the case then post the miles away from the border for each base? Consider that a challenge.... my guess is you won't or you will try to hide behind some other argument or bluster. To be clear I am just looking for you to post the mileage from each of the highlighted base to the border.... nothing else.

Lets see if the trade deals end up being magical or not... bearing in mind several major countries have already contacted us to start the process.... I'm pretty confident I'll be proved right on that one in the fullness of time. Why would other countries not want to negotiate a deal with one of the largest economies in the world who actually want to put a deal in place?

You know I’m sorry and I apologise, to you and to Dancing Bear. I sit in the stand at BP and I suppose I just assume that the people around me have an interest in international politics, an enquiring mind and a desire to learn new things. Thinking about it there is no reason why that would be the case and that is my failing.

It’s a shame. This week the Chilcot Report into the invasion of Iraq came out. To me a fascinating report that shows what we already know which is that Bush and Blair lied to us all supported by such erstwhile newspapers at the Daily Express and the Daily Mail. Using my logic if the mainstream now accepts that we were duped in Iraq shouldn’t we question 9/11, Syria, Isis, bases around Russia?

But then maybe not. Why would we want to know? Life is good.

So I’m sorry. If you want to take the Express or Mail at face value and decry other sources of information, then it is arrogant of me to criticise. Vote Tory and believe. Live a happy life, who cares what happens outside

You just stick to re-hashing conspiracy theories from the internet and your obsession with how amazing Russia is Citizen Smith.

Oh I do take an interest in international politics.... I just don't trawl the internet to find conspiracy theories that I can regurgitate as my own opinions, like you do. There is a big difference. I don't read the Express or the Mail as it happens... but if I did it would still be better than believing the garbage on RT like you do. I'd struggle to think of a more biased source of information anywhere in the world. I also don't assume that people are idiots with no interest in the world just because they express a different opinion to me. I'll also happily admit when I'm wrong instead of squirming and sidestepping questions like you do constantly... you are really wasted... you should be an MP. I look forward to your (and by your, I mean some bored geek who invented it before you rehashed it) theories about 911 etc. being proven.

As for who I'll vote for... I think i'll wait and see the manifesto to make an informed opinion on who is best for the country at that point in time... I don't support a political party like a football team regardless of the information.

No, you are absolutely right and again I apologise for not suffering fools gladly. When you go to countries like Afghanistan or Jordan which is the UN command centre for Syria and Iraq and see what is happening on the ground it is difficult to be told by someone who lives in a village, reads the Daily Mail and whose foreign exposure is a week a year in Torremolinos that you are a bull shitter and they know much more about international politics. And my opinions are learned like everyone’s, I got to spend time with a guy called Wesley Clark for example. Wesley no doubt will be classified as a tinfoil hat wearing, bullshitting lunatic by the you but as he was Supreme Commander of Nato I am willing to believe him. Here is a slice of his opinion.

I also got to spend some time with these guys as they were hired by the UN to look at attacks in Ukraine. This is Theodore Postol’s article debunking the CIA evidence that Assad was using gas in Syria. Theodore from MIT is the foremost weapons analyst in the US.

www.mintpressnews.com/the-failed-pretext...n-gas-attack/188597/

Currently we are working with the Rohingya in Myanmar. They are a persecuted Muslim minority. Not a great paper seller in the UK so no doubt they won’t be mentioned in the Mail.

Obviously you will reply that it is all nonsense and made up because a mind as broad as Karen Carpenter’s arse crack won’t be able to comprehend that others have done these things so go ahead. As I said go back to your village, have a good life, believe the stories of Russian, Isis, Al Qaeda, Iran aggression or whatever the Mail is pedalling this week. Why not, ignorance is bliss and anything that doesn't neatly fit your view is lies or propoganda, how could you ever learn anything with your knowledge?

Oh and Riga is not a thousand miles from the Russian border. Its not even a thousand miles from Moscow. Whatever the Daily Mail says

The problem for Leadsom as Simon English pointed out in the Times business pages yesterday is that she WASN'T a leading banker, nor was she a fund manager. She was head of compliance/Senior Investment Officer - the role you end up doing when you can't do a proper job in fund management. In other words she had never led anyone in the world of business and she wanted to lead the country. She had to be knifed before the grassroots Tories took her to their hearts because of her very right-wing views.
