I was half expecting it as I saw Andy Bell sitting near the Carlisle directors down at Exeter last Saturday.

I have said my piece on the original incident. Andy Bell as far as I know has always been a Carlisle United fan and has every right to go and watch his team, the same as we all do.

Before the match on Sunday I had a brief chat with a couple of the Carlisle directors. Had I known those boards were in place I would have asked them:

When you took those boards down last year did you deliberately put them somewhere safe so you could bring them out when you thought the fans wouldn't notice? The boards certainly didn't look new.

How do the companies feel who had boards there all season? I know that boards are sold (or in most cases at Brunton Park this season given in return for some sponsorship) for the season only but were the folk who had that space consulted and given first refusal. Sunday's match had the most media coverage and biggest crowd so I would have been a bit miffed if I'd paid for a board and it wasn't there. It would surely put folk off taking it next season.

In the thread about the Checkatrade Trophy I wondered in what other ways Carlisle United were willing to forget family values and fans wishes when it came to a little more money. Think this has answered the question.

Certain advertising contracts will have expired at the end of the normal season and it may be that these were the spaces Bells adverts appeared in which in normal circumstances would be fine if it wasnt him and his disgraced company taking them.

Didnt see him rushing up to pay the 15k to re open the kids club did you ?

One of the Bookies.com boards was in the position one of the extra 1m x 1m boards we (World Group) took on (to fill spaces left due to lack of interest) was in.

World Group's were in the end just moved to lesser areas - I'm assuming Bell paid more money for it. Still got quite a bit of TV coverage on them because of where celebrations happened, but also saw stewards and ballboys covering up half the bigger board!!

Didn't get a heads up, but it would have been nice. I guess the club won't have foreseen the shock I got. Originally I was very disappointed to see this and especially to see that name in particular back there. Pretty much Over it now, but I must admit, before I knew ours had been moved (and ever so slightly still) and I was assuming they'd been removed, it felt like a royal fingers in the face.

Commercially, obviously income is income to the club and Mr Bell had injected consistently for a few seasons up until Twitter gate. He's continued to spend on other clubs and obviously the club feel enough time has passed between then and now to welcome him back.

Another explanation could be that he actually struck a sponsorship deal with Sky or the EFL and the club had no say in it. Not sure - anyone?

Wow, got to say You have taken it remarkably well. Ok, you only took the space because the club hadn't managed to sell it but the very least you deserved was a heads up.

Bearing in mind your company sponsors the back of the team shirts and has done a fair bit of work on the disabled facilities, the discourtesy you have been shown is breathtaking.

Even if the deal is with the EFL or Sky (which I doubt as I would imagine Skybet hold exclusivity on betting advertising) surely the very least the club could do is give you a ring or an email. Astoundingly bad business not to.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for the club generating income.

I'm also aware they've had a lot going on in the last few weeks and perhaps it just slipped their minds.

I don't think it is a deliberate act - more of an oversight.

Looks like the club been blinded by a bit of publicity and no doubt extra dosh.

When things are quiet next season and they come calling for a bit of sponsorship I would tell them in no uncertain terms to f*ck off. But that's the kind of fella I am. :cheer:

Well if Bell is looking for redemption and forgiveness how about he start with a sincere apology to the people he pissed off [and thats not Jenkins as he clearly couldnt give a shit about anything but the cash ] but the fans and maybe say his company will cover the travel costs [ or the ticket cost at a very minimum ] of everyone travelling down to Exeter.

Should he decline to do this then as i said yesterday we should be bombarding the club with e mails and social media demanding they have noting to with him and tell him where to stick his betting cash.

This highlights a few things: the club knew of the game and exposure it would get on TV etc. And if the current advertising deals had ended, why weren't the commercial folk working their arses off to generate a bit more income. First step I'd have thought would be contacting the existing advertisers to at least offer a deal for this game. By the sound of it though, they only covered up certain boards with the 'new' sponsor and moved the others around?!

The other thing, and I'm playing devil's advocate a bit here; I wonder how picky clubs of our size and stature about advertisers even if they don't agree with a company's ethics or morals. Advertising boards are a little different to shirt sponsors as they aren't associated directly with the club.

Overall it smacks of money grabbing, which in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing, but like everything else at cufc, it could have been done in a much better way, kept current advertisers loyal and probably generated more income than just slapping a few bookies.com boards around the ground. It's ameteurish at best.

Email was sent round as soon as we beat Exeter to existing sponsors - I received it literally minutes after the final whistle.

I can't remember what it said off hand but believe it mentioned hospitality packages, match, ball and associate sponsorships along with programme. Also a Buffet in Legends bar. It, from memory, excluded any mention of ground boards.

Yes, you're correct, boards were repositioned to allow for Sky and some select others to get TV facing spots. This could be as they opted for TV facing locations upon initial sponsorship. I'm pretty sure we did that, however.

Phil rang me earlier, missed his call and he missed my return call, and to his credit, responded promptly to my email on Sunday just before the game.

Even better if youre in the position BAHA are in where the Premier League fund the installation and the club pays it back from the income

Mind you if you get relegated they deduct the cost from your parachute payments

I was surprised there wernt any [or at least the extra static boards like the Everton match ] on Sunday

Maybe for a team in the premier league (and maybe even more for some clubs) but I imagine potential revenue would be somewhat lower for a division 3 or 4 club. I hate those digital boards anyway.

Theres a lot of first generation ones around for sale but they use horrendous amounts of electricity almost requiring their own sub station.

But i think what CUSG were talking about was a display scoreboard and i hope to god theyre not tasked with buying it as the prices theyre talking about are four times what they need to be paying.

I might be wrong but heard it was being paid for by the fans. Maybe NS can tell us more but surely if they can be that forward thinking and seeking other revenue streams so can we.
This whole Andy bell episode has not helped the club at all from start to finish but they really don't hell themselves either. The club needs an overhaul from top to bottom.

The above mentioned screen is up and running and yes the fans did pay for it with a fundraising campaign over 3 months using tiffosy it cost 28k for a 12sq m one they were going to get the bigger 20sq at £40k m but even though Andy Holt offered to lend them the money to meet the shortfall till they could arrange some more fundraising events they chose to buy the smaller one instead which hasnt gone down too well with a lot of people who donated and who would of been willing to again to raise the extra 12k.

If we were to get one for BP i would go for the 30sq m one at 55k and stick it up in the waterworks end where the old scoreboard was in the first division days.

accringtonstanley.co.uk/2017/04/put-your...upinlights-the-wham/

The second one is how it would of looked if theyd gone with the 40k version.

Its a complicated deal the original plan was for the fans to raise 40k for the larger one and that included the club giving them the income from the first years advertising so i assume the fans group want to maintain ownership of it while [ after the first year ] the club getting the revenue

Although the fund raising thru tiffosy went well[ i bought a be a manager for a day package] even with all the extra bits it did seem a little ambitious in 3 months and included the income from a couple of long established events they hold each summer it would of cleaned them out totally and i think for an organisation that always likes to have a few quid in the bank [ pre AH they bailed the club out more than once ] and when it became clear the amount they would have would be 12k short so they had a choice settle for the smaller screen that they had the money for or accept Andys offer to loan them 6k and raise the rest and then raise the 6k theyd owe AH.

The committee chose the first option against the wishes of a lot of the fans [ i too thought it short sighted and do even more now i.ve seen how small the purchased one looks from the halfway line in the main stand ] but the lads on the committee are good blokes and i thnk itll soon all blow over but for me its an opportunity missed

So what Clibbens is saying that any moral decision made by the club can be over rided with the right amount of cash. :(

Was thinking exactly the same thing DB it's a real shame that a money before morals policy has been taken up by the off field side of the club when the playing staff are a real credit.

This was pretty likely to happen at some stage

What grates with me is that he was allowed back into the fold with no penance towards the people who matter the fans.

As i said at the time an offer to fund half a dozen buses to Exeter for the play off game or purchasing all the tickets so they were free for the fans might have been a good start but clearly he doesnt give a shit about anything beyond getting his sad little companies name on TV.

There was a couple of bookies.com boards at the Exeter ground as well, maybe part of the overall sponsorship, not that it make it right but nothing the board does surprises me anymore.

Double edge sword in Carlisle, on the one hand the lack of people gives local media a monopoly,(News and Star must be the most expensive daily in the UK) on the other there are very few places where any volume of people congregate where worthwhile advertising can be taken.

You wouldn't believe CUFC were in a strong position to gain advertising sponsorship give the attitude of some of the BOD and the effort made to attract people.

Free is Free in other words it costs nothing

If they want you to pay then say so by not letting you see anything without a subscription Then lets see how much online advertising they sell

What they do at the minute is begging simple as

The definition of a "free press". Nowt to do with monetary cost to the reader.
