TOPIC: Newport (A) Match Thread

Well finally a defeat maybe the wake up call that its not plain sailing in this league.....just hope the next game they respond well.. All i can say is they have very done well.so far...1 defeat and its mid nov is a damn good effort.. blip and move on to next week now.

What the actual f*** was Gillesphey thinking for that first goal!!!
Second goal was just a case of piling forward for the corner in the hunt for the equaliser and then getting absolutely raped on the counter attack.

And that pitch is a disgrace. No way should a pitch like that be acceptable in professional football. I dread to think what it will be like by January.

They won their last League match 1-3 at Accrington so today was not the time to play them. Maybe not a bad thing to get the unbeaten run out of the way.

Agree about the pitch - there needs to be standards set. Having said that, what was ours like after the first lot of floods...

The pitch obviously doesn't benefit Newport or this wouldn't have been the 1st home win they've had since March.

We knew what the pitch was going to be like and how Westley plays so should've planned for and implemented tactics to take that into account.

Also doesn't help when most of the team had bad games by the sounds of it.

The pitch must have been a factor for us...our style needs a decent surface

Youll struggle to get promotion if you cant play on a variety of surfaces. We lost today coz we played crap and they didnt. I wish people would stop making daft excuses.

Newport fans after the game were asking me if we were particularly bad or were they actually quite good. I think we have to give credit to Westley. He has recruited the right sort of physical players to make them very difficult to beat. They packed the defence and we just found it almost impossible to get the ball through to create goal scoring opportunities. We needed to stretch them but just didn't have the answer.

1 defeat and people are questioning a lot about this teams , This league isn't like the premier league where the side who wins it only lose 3-4 games. League 2 has a history of being unpredictable and this year will be no different.

If Tom Miller or Brough had done any of that everyone would be slating them. It seems Grainger can play as crap as he wants and it's fine. The lad pats the badge and is proud to play for the club(basically says the right things) but he's a weak link in the team, he isn't a consistent performer, could be the difference between getting promoted or not IMO. I could be wrong though!

By most accounts nearly everybody had an off day yesterday.

And if we do go up we can say it was due to the goals our prolific left back scored. Strange game eh?

He was skinned for the first by a nippy sounding winger but if you insist on levelling blame on anyone I think there's an obvious bigger culprit for the goal than Grainger. Why was it a silly short corner for the second? Looked like it was well worked which got our best striker of the ball in a good position to shoot (similar position to his goal against Hartlepool) on a day where we barely had any shots on goal. We've mixed our set piece routines up of late and it's paid dividends so I don't think you can criticise for trying something different from slinging the ball into the box, some pay off some don't. Anyhow, where's this unwritten rule come from that if you're one down you have to "put it in the box"?

Grainger's had a decent steady season so far and contributed a fair amount of goals and if he did have an off day yesterday he certainly wasn't the only one.

Every player at League 2 has weaknesses, or they would be playing much higher. For me the main minus for Danny is his lack of speed. and it showed yesterday. He has plenty of plus points to his game, scoring six goals in six being one of the main ones. It doesn't matter that some were penalties, they still have to be scored and we have had some very average penalty takers in the past, with Danny we can feel relatively confident.

We had similar moans about Ian Hart, some people never got past his lack of pace, even though he proved before and after to be a player able to play at a far higher level than we as a team at that time ever could.

Surely a big part of building a team at this level is to find a combination of players who can cover the weakness in individuals and create a team.

Oh and on a footnote, yesterday, quite honestly the whole team was rubbish by their high standards. No lack of effort but some very tired legs and even tireder brains.,

It's been a big week on and off the pitch. Now comes the biggest test yet. If we bounce back quickly we have a real chance of promotion.

Exactly Bumble, by the sounds of it some folk seem to think that scoring a penalty doesn't count as a goal! They still need put away and in Grainger we have someone who pretty good at doing that.

Yes it was a poor team performance I agree.

Ive said before i dont think it helps whoever plays left back that with our team the way it is theyre gonna be left exposed a bit. Adams naturally goes inside a lot and doesnt get back to help out defensively as much as our options on the right ie Kennedy or Lambe do.

Anyone on here on the way back from Newport in the bar at Preston Station waiting for the 20:41 home having a loud chat with the old Plymouth fan? Quite interesting to listen to.

In relation to the grainger post earlier, couldn't be bothered quoting all that:

I think Tom Miller is our poorest defender, Football is a game full of opinions. But i'm not waiting for the day Miller has a stinker to bring it up, as long as he plays for our team i'll support him as much as any other.

No one said owt about not supporting him when he's on the pitch. I just think people are a bit blinkered when it comes to Grainger, all the team played bad yesterday but he seemed to stand out as the worst. Maybe when the team plays well it masks how bad he actually is?!

I don't really know what Grainger could do about that first goal. Adams left him 1 v 2, stood and watched as their fast full back overlapped and ran past Grainger. He couldn't go with him straight away because he's facing up to the player with the ball. What do you expect him to do? The overlapping lad is faster than him, he can't just turn into Usain Bolt at the flick of a switch.

The person 100% at fault for that goal is Macauley. It should have been a routine left footed clearance.

Just watched the highlights, I'm not making the pitch an excuse because both sides had to play on it but at one point Adams chipped the ball 5 yards to Miller because he knew it wouldn't roll.

Newport seemed to be knocking the ball about well enough on the ground on the short highlights clip, two good well worked goals. I think Carlisle were just poor.

Don't forget he helped out in the floods, too!

Just wish Grainger sprinted after opposition players, like he does towards our players when celebrating a goal.

Just watched highlights. Grainger is shocking at times at full back but as mentioned Tom Miller isn't much better.
