25 years of glory 25 years ago hangs like a noose round the neck of this club who through years of self pity and miss management have finally reached the point of no return ,in years to come there self obsessed fanbase will look back on last night as the moment they joined those other delusional fools at Newcastle in the "we really are a big club" club

I thought their fans were ok and was quiet impressed with the attendance considering they were playing a league 2 club in the league cup.
They don't seem to make it easy for their "fair weather" supporters to get tickets either.

To be fair 142/156 I think anyone with the slightest knowledge of football history would realise there are light years difference between Newcastle and Liverpool having pretensions of 'we really are a big club'.

Big grounds big crowds and expectations that are not realistic place them in the same bracket,Newcastle fans hang on to there 1950s glory years of fa cup wins when the fa cup meant more than european glory,Liverpool do the same over there 70s/80s era the different trophys won doesnt effect the underlying problem at both clubs now

It's just what a lot of their fans deserve for being glory hunters in the first place by choosing the team who were winning everything at the time. Now they have their comeuppance. :-D

Newcastle's 'glory days' were a couple of cups. Between 73 and 90 Liverpool won 11 titles and 4 European Cups.

Since their heyday Newcastle have been largely shit: Liverpool may not have won the league for 25 years but I make it 7 domestic cups and 2 in Europe since then. Not a fan of either clubs to be honest but Liverpool really are a big club and Newcastle never really have been , except in their supporters' heads.

tbf they got [censored] lucky, very lucky and nearly again, when the draws are so fixed that you can sometimes get an easier passage to the finals, due to who you can or can not meet before the semi finals.

Through out the sky years of football Liverpool alongside Arsenal have seemingly been content to hang onto 3rd or 4th and rake in all the extra cash that the Champs league brought in, this then gave them an added advantage over other clubs looking to crack the top 4, but that all came crashing to an end when there was no guarantee of finishing top four for any of them, Liverpool missing out more than most, with even the worlds greatest and most loved managing to miss out at least one year, so far.

In the end this has been the end for Liverpool, a team with a recent top history from Shanks on, when a club like that is happy to finish top 4 but not challenge for the title it has all gone wrong somewhere.

It must be very frustrating for Liverpool .they have spent millions trying to keep up with the others but for a number of reasons they have fallen short. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world but a world away from getting back on top again.

They are far more successful that the others but they have fallen into the same loop as spurs and could even be another huge club unable to challenge for years to come like villa, Everton and, yes, even Newcastle and Sunderland.
The likes of Chelsea are smaller than all those mentioned but money has transformed them and they will take some stopping.
For a club like arsenal to be content with top 4 says so much about the top flight nowadays.
The likes of Carlisle and league 2 may not be glamorous but at least we have a cause and a reason to turn up each week never knowing what's going to happen each season. That's the beauty of the game. Knowing roughly the shape of the season before it even starts must be so boring. Below the premier league may not be fashionable but it is far more exciting.

When I said historically I was referring to football over the last 125 years.

Newcastle have only had what you could call purple patches. The 50s Gimp mentioned with 3 FA cup wins when it probably carried more kudos than it does now. They had an outstanding team in the early 1900s, winning the league 3 times. They also reached the FA cup final 5 times between 1905-1911, but only won once in 1910. Finals were played at Crystal Palace in those days and it was reckoned the lush grass made Newcastle's passing game ineffective as it slowed the ball down. ( Most teams played the long ball game in those days - some things never change! ) A league championship in 1927 and an FA cup win in 1932 were isolated triumphs.

Liverpool had already won the league championship 6 times before the purple patch between 1973-90, although unusually had to wait until 1965 for their first FA Cup win, but have won it 6 more times since, plus 8 league cup wins. So Liverpool have been much more consistent historically over the 125 years.

Regarding big crowds and 'glory hunters', cities with big populations such as Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield and Leeds are always going to have a head start on other teams due to the bigger base from which to draw support. So I don't think that these teams necessarily have a bigger proportion of 'glory hunters' than others. How many of our 5770 supporters at Anfield will be at the Newport game? Also given the lower league opposition I thought the turn out from Liverpool supporters was impressive on Wednesday. Compare the attendance at our game with the 15 other ties that week.

When have been outside the top flight it is always interesting to see the support so called big teams attract then. Newcastle had crowds of 12000-13000 in some of their second tier days ( as did Liverpool in the late 1950s ) To be fair from what I remember even when Manchester United were in the doldrums in the 70s and 80s they still got big crowds.

When Man City fell from grace and dropped down to level 3 they still got upwards of 30k crowds and took a huge following away from home, this is the thing that the so called loyal Newcastle fans forget about themselves, they deserted their team before KK came and turned them around.

Man Citys ave that year was the highest it had been for 17 years. Fans must have enjoyed seeing a winning team. You never know Newcastle may have got similar if they had dropped that low.

I went to the first City home match that season - was Blackpool on a Friday night. My mates a City fan and we bought a couple off a tout outside for the Blackpool end, were plenty of City in that end as well - place was buzzing and they won 3 0, used to go now and again with him - great Stadium sadly now gone.

They may not fall as far as Newcastle and will keep there support but if you sell two players for over 100m and then recruit from southampton and burnley you are no longer a big club, history means nothing six clubs have won the league since they last won it and have only challenged maybe three seasons and can anyone see them challenging in the next 10 years no

IT isn't a lack of money that has stopped them though is it ?

When you have splashed out 35m for Carroll (     ) in the same year City paid 33m for Aguero then that is just a very bad buy, Liverpool have spent a lot cash over the years, hiring and firing a French manager who brought in a load of french players, The Spanish Waitor who oddly replaced the french buys with some Chorizo and then good old King Kenny came in and went mad over the English talent and spunked 100m on 3or 4 players.

Nathaniel Clyne - £12,500,000
Christian Benteke - £32,500,000
Roberto Firmino - £29,000,000
Rickie Lambert - £4,000,000
Adam Lallana - £25,000,000
Emre Can - £10,000,000
Lazar Markovic - £20,000,000
Dejan Lovren - £20,000,000
Divock Origi - £10,000,000
Alberto Moreno Perez - £12,000,000
Mario Balotelli - £16,000,000
Luis Alberto - £6,800,000
Iago Aspas - £7,200,000
Simon Mignolet - £9,000,000
Tiago Ilori - £7,000,000
Mamadou Sakho - £18,000,000

240m or so in the last 2/3 seasons and that doesn't include any of the King Kenny, Houliers or Benietez'es signings.

I wish Suarez was English. Made a tidy profit on him too, not bad for a team who 'spunk' money. Can't really have a go at Liverpool for spending money when they are probably more sustainable than we are.

I doubt many at Liverpool weren't regulars at BP. We sold out before it even went on general sale. I bet there were no more than 500 in there who don't attend on a regular basis.

Well given that ST holders and CUOSC members could buy more than one ticket ( so in fact a person who was ST and CUOSC could buy three extra tickets ) I reckon it would be more than 500, Pete. We'll see how many are there tomorrow.

Man Utd prob did when they got relegated to deliberately avoid playing us in the top flight ;). Newcastle once got a low crowd for a league cup game though so they must be terrible fans. I dunno why folk cant just admit Newcastle are a very well supported club considering theyve not won owt for decades whether we like them or not.

Yeah but that was after a sustained spell in the top flight and as expected went straight back up, but what was mentioned was them going from around a steady 35k average dropping down to just 16k in 1981.

Of course we would love a shit average like that and then we may challenge to get back up the championship eventually.

Aye Man Utd did average a bit better in 1974-75 - 48.389.

I think it's more to do with the average IQ of Newcaste fans as opposed to them being good supporters.

Missed your earlier query, Gimp

Newcastle 73-90 and also onwards

2006 UEFA Intertoto cup ( RU 2001 )

Anglo Italian tournament 1973

Tier 2 ( championship/old div 2 ) 1992-3, 2009-10

Runners up FA Cup 1998, 1999, league cup 1976

Texaco trophy 1974, 1975

Kirin Cup 1983

Teresa Herrera Trophy 2010

Guadiana Trophy 2012

I'd love to know what those last few are - presumably some sort of pre season tournaments.

Size of support or money is not the real problem it's the expectation of the fans who in Liverpools case can understand but Newcastle can't do the players in both clubs really believe they would ever earn 50g+ a week that is the problem they can only attract average players but have to pay inflated fees and wages
