Last nights game just makes you realise how proud you are to be a carlisle fan and not a plastic premier league fan, just hope the 5,800 who went yesterday start coming to BP every week.

What a load of shite, you're one of those inverted snobs who think themselves superior because they support a lower league club. Are people who support us from Penrith or Workington plastic, after all they have their own team they could support. Should people from Newcastle desert their team and support Hartlepool instead. The vast majority of fans of Premier League clubs come from the surrounding area of that team. Would you stop going if by a miracle we got to the Prem, I think not.

Perhaps the case for the likes of Stoke, Southampton, West Brom etc... but you're having a laugh re Liverpool, Man U etc... how many buses go to their games from all over the country every week? There's not a massive ex-Manc population in Devon and Cornwall, but loads go to OT from there.

I reckon everyone has the right to support who they want, and I'd never suggest otherwise. But I just don't understand how you could have the same level of passion for your team without being from there. In my mind it's a birth right, not a choice. Although, I guess if you're from Oldham, Bury, Stockport, Hartlepool, Walsall etc, then you have a more local connection to Man Utd/City, Newcastle/Sunderland/M'boro or Villa etc than those fans that head to Anfield, Goodison or Old Trafford every other week.

I don't have an issue with the prem teams having a huge support just don't like it when someone from carlisle says were crap and have no interest in them but support Man U on sky and have been to old Trafford once in a life time. The big clubs are in big cities so have huge followings. I get where your coming from....how many people don't support England and support Germany instead because they are a good team? Not many as guess what were English

I imagine (and I may be wrong) that he means the sort of fan who doesn't actually go to the games their chosen team plays, rather they sit in the pub pontificating about how great they are. There are many of these, there are a huge number in West Cumbria who call Man Utd or Liverpool "we", never having been to a single game. These are the sort of people I can't stand. Then there are genuine fans of those clubs, I work with a Liverpool season ticket holder (the dog knows who I mean) who understands the game perfectly and talked about last night at length to me this morning. I also work with a plastic Liverpool fan who was all triumphalist about winning on penalties against a league 2 side. Therein lies the difference, there are genuine, real fans of these teams in this area, and there are the plastic ones referred to in the original post on this thread.

The genuine Liverpool fan has told me what an amazing thing it was to see an opposition team, especially one from league 2 go to Anfield, not be at all intimidated, and knock the ball around as if they were playing in their own back garden. He was impressed with the commitment and endeavour of the Carlisle players, and disappointed with the application of some of the Liverpool players. The plastic fan has nothing to say about the game but is delighted to have somebody to take the piss out of.

Wukkie, where is the Aspatria Liverpool supporters club situated.Just because the name on the bus suggests it is from somewhere doesn't mean it is carrying fans from there. On our Wembley trips many buses were used from Glasgow and the North-east. Chester via Bothel shot himself in the foot there saying fans cannot have the same passion for a club if they are not from that area, how would that sit with people from Wukkiem Whitehaven and Hexham and penrith?

PADDOCK sorry if i annoyed you with this post, but just don't understand why people don't support their local team, especially Carlisle, if more fans turn up the better chance of progression (maybe not with our owners/custodians)

What about their fans across the world that these big clubs go to visit in the summer... USA, Australia, all over Asia etc? You're referring to match attending fans, I simply used the buses from all round the country as part of my point. You're probably right about the majority of fans that attend are from the local area, but 60,000 is small fry compared to the number of Man Utd fans in the UK, never mind across the world.

As I said, everyone has the right to support who they want, but I just can't understand how you can have the same level of passion for a club that's 2, 3, 4 hours drive from where you are from. I just don't get how you would have the same connection to that club as the Cumbrians in the away end would have last night.

The reason they're not coming is that for the last few years the product on offer has been rubbish backed by don't care owners. Now the product is better but they see no hope for the future whilst Noddy and Bigears are in charge. The worry is by the time they go people will have got used to not going.

There are Carlisle fans in all of those place you mention on a smaller scale of course, are they plastic because geography dictates they can't go. You mean fans who want to bask in the reflected glory of following a winning or 'big' team.

Don't misquote me, I didn't say they cannot have the same passion... what I said is that I cannot understand how they can have the same passion. There's a world of difference, but don't let that get in the way of something that's clearly touched a nerve with you.

I've not called anyone plastic. My geography and financial priorities dictate I can't go to BP anywhere near as often as I would like, but I was born in Carlisle, brought up in Bothel and despite living in Chester for the last 17 years I'm fiercely proud of where I was brought up and watching Carlisle as a kid is part of that.

Interesting thread, I know a guy who came into the rugby club around the same time last year, and when I said I supported Carlisle to him, he laughed his head off and said something along the lines of" I wouldn't go and watch that shit if I was paid", I believe he said he supported Manchester United, whether he goes to Old Trafford or not I have no idea, I suspect he doesn't!!
However he came back into the club only last week bragging to anybody that could be bothered to listen that he had got a ticket for Liverpool game, and how he hoped "WE were going to wup their sorry arses", some people beggar belief!!!!

Edited to add: Bothel didn't have a team for me to support.

Completely agree

Have a quick scan on the official LFC facebook page, and read the comments and it is all: 'Disgusting!' and 'How did we not smash these?' then every so often, you see a refreshing comment along the lines of 'Credit to Carlisle, came to play etc'. The latter comment, is probably someone who understands the game' the former: probably generalizing, but they're probably the type who sit with their replica shirt in a pub in Carlsile and have a 'rivalry' with the lad in the Man U shirt sat next to him

To be fair the reason Liverpool/Man Utd became such big clubs is because they can draw extra fans in from outside the area thus generating a bigger cash flow leading to them signing a better quality of player on top the rather large populous to begin with being from big city clubs before the TV money begun to distort the whole game.

I tried being a Workington fan, I never missed a home game for about four years and done a few away too but I was never made to feel welcome by fellow fans and the amount of racism I heard was despicable so it wasn't for me. I started going to Carlisle even though I had the obvious local interest and I was made to feel welcome by a whole number of people and they eventually became my club.

I find it to be quite simple. Fans who actually go to games generally always understand the game a lot better. There are always exceptions to the rule though. But plastic fans get their tactical knowledge from Jamie Carragher or Gary Neville pressing a load of buttons on their fancy screen, we, the fans who go to games get it from actually seeing things happen and unfold before our very eyes.

Yep totally agree of all the lads at work none of the ones who go to watch Liverpool or Man Utd or even Newcastle take the piss out of Carlisle. If anyone its usually the ones who are experts but have never set foot in a football stadium in their lives.

KC summed up the support when he said it isn't easy being a Carlisle fan. You don't just wake up and say I'm going to see my team away etc. The product has been awful, the distances horrendous etc but we do it because we love the club.
Those who go to games or would if they could and do when they can are the ones deserving of the most respect. Their opinion is more valid than the pub replica shirt dwellers. Everyone is a fan but some fans are better than others.
At school most of us followed a big team. We liked to associate ourselves glory and success. Even though I was Carlisle mad and went to every game, my big team was Liverpool. They were winning everything at the time. The school was split between man United and Liverpool and a few others who just wanted to be different (no one supported a southern club though if a remember rightly). Children get into football this way then as they grow up the true dedication shows. A lot will shed the big team as they mature . Those that don't can be found wearing premier league team shirts in pubs across the land on a Sunday , regurgitating exactly what the pundits have to say before pretending to get angry at the screen when 'their' team only win 3.0 against a minnow like WBA or Southampton.

Don't misquote me, I didn't say they cannot have the same passion... what I said is that I cannot understand how they can have the same passion. There's a world of difference, but don't let that get in the way of something that's clearly touched a nerve with you.

I understand what you mean. I could probably attend most York home games, given my early starts and my boy got interested for a bit cos his mate was. I took him to a game and could have lived with it if the product was decent, but it was as bad as watching us at the time. The big difference is the emotion, even when it's crap. Hence I've never been back except when we travel there and missed last week cos I didn't get finished on time.

I've potentially got a similar issue coming up when my boy's older. I'd love to share nights like Wednesday with him, but as I live in Chester I'm just not sure whether he'll want to follow Carlisle or not... but I'd sooner take him to Chester games than him go to Liverpool, Everton, Man Citeh or Man Utd.

My lads never lived in Carlisle but supports Carlisle. Take him when I can. He was shaking watching the pen shoot out on SSN. He's had it drummed into him. His heroes though are Messi and Neymar and Zoko is his favourite Carlisle player of all time he loves the flare and shit.

Went in the Beehive after the Dagenham game to watch the Man U Liverpool game with a few mates, none of whom had been to the Carlisle game and some of whom 'support' Man U and some Liverpool. What followed was quite embarrassing really, arguing between themselves about who was best for an hour and a half whilst using the word "we". I was just there shaking my head.
