I remember Charlton away in the cup, we were 3 nil down by half time and every goal came from Tavernier being out of position.

He was great going forward but pretty poor defensively. I suspect he's getting away with that at borderline pub league level in Scotland.

How so? He's easily one of the most complete footballers, in terms of technique and reading the game, we've had in the past decade. He also scored some great goals, some of them being important goals for us as well. Millwall at home and Leeds in the JPT, for example. Don't let your mind be clouded by his disastrous run as manager. He was a fine player.

I wanted to include Gray or Zigor (or even Tom Cowan) but I tried to come up with a team as objectively as I could and not let sentiment get in the way. Ehmer looked real quality - mostly playing for us in a higher league than Kev Gray.

Sadly very few of those players were ever really 'ours'. Either loanees or passing through on the way to better things. Did any of them, other than Westwood, play 100 games for the club?

He may have been a great player in his younger days at Stoke and Cardiff and whoever else he played for, for for us he was utter clart. I seem to remember almost every pass he ever made went straight to the opposition. He had less pace than Steve Livingstone wearing concrete boots. To put him anywhere near a top 10 since 2000 is utterly laughable. I very much doubt he would make it into my top 100.

Sorry thefoot but I'm not having that. Kavanagh utter clart for us as a player? I remember plenty of goals, numerous assists, I don't remember him passing to the opposition every time. You're right about him being unable to run, but he made up for that with other attributes.

I remember him completely dominating a JPT match at Elland Road, capping it off with an absolute beauty of a half volley into the top corner.

I don't think I'd put him in a post 2000 best 11 either, but he wasn't shite for us until he became manager.

Sorry crunchblue but I'm not having that either.
I remember his set pieces were abysmal and he scored a grand total of 4 goals for us. Hardly impressive for a "goal scoring midfielder". The only attribute he seemed to have was that he could kick the ball hard. That was it. And I must have missed this 1 JPT game where he was good, because every game I saw him in he was awful. His inclusion into our team coincided with our decline from being a top league one team challenging for promotion into the relegation fodder we became.

I think you could squeeze Ziggy. in Harte was better for us at CB. Can remember him being a bit of a liability at LB cos his legs had gone.

Fair enough, point proven. It's been a while, maybe the quality and importance of his 4 goals for the club are clouding my judgement.

I seem to remember Ian Harte scoring loads of headers from Kavanagh corners. Again maybe it's not as many as I think I remember.

Bridges by a country mile, best player I've seen in a Carlisle shirt (first game was '84). Osman and Marshall probably the only other players worth a mention in my eyes.

Kavanagh was decent as a player for us, just got the feeling he was showed up on numerous occasions by inferior players not being on the same wavelength as him. Wasn't a big fan of Lawrence to be honest, thought he had a great game against Tranmere (I think) when he scored a worldie, but wasn't impressed otherwise.

Scored a better away at Leeds, remember thinking they would be punished giving him that much space and a minute later he punished them. Also think i remember him scoring a cracker v Charlton ?

Definitely not confused. In 52 league appearances he scored 19 goals. I think when some one who has top class talent drops down to the lower leagues you don't worry about what his weaknesses are, you get some one else to cover those and let him concentrate on what he does best. He lacked pace, other players had pace, but he could take a free kick like no one else in the lower leagues. He was probably the best header of the ball in the squad and he could land a 30 yard pass on a pin head, you don't get players like that very often.
