Newcastle city councils current plan to remove loads of roundabouts and put traffic lights in, the delays are annoying when work is done and when its done it is worse than before.

I firmly believe the use of traffic lights is a manifestation of socialism in practice. The more Labour a council the more they install traffic lights especially on roundabouts. In London they do it if absolutely necessary like at the A1/M25 junction or Charlie Brown's in Woodford but these work well. In the North East they have roundabouts like Holystone where the phasing is such that you automatically get held up. In many countries abroad you have traffic lights switching to amber flashing lights after a certain time which makes sense. In the south you have traffic lights with sensors that keep hold-ups to a minimum. But the North East is traffic light crazy. I reckon to drive from Benton via Four Lane Ends to the bottom end of Chillingham Road in Heaton ( about 2-3 miles) I must pass 20 different sets of lights.
It's the same with disabled badges/spaces. This is a big issue in the North East as lots of people seem to have them. Councils insist on large numbers of spaces which mean that it is sometimes hard to find a regular space. In the South East blue badges aren't doled out to anyone who asks for one plus there isn't the ageing population of former industrial workers so it's not an issue if someone parks in an empty disabled space for a few minutes as long as plenty of other spaces are still left available.
Actually the whole North East annoys me. You can't get a mobile signal half the time, the Metro runs so slowly, the weather is grim, the standard of driving is aggressive etc. As the place of my upbringing it makes me sad to see its continued decline but they don't seem to be able to improve things.
