TheCumbrians @Jaffa113 It will be available to take to away games though providing the other club don't have a problem, given the size.
TheCumbrians @Jaffa113 Unfortunately not mate, I wasn't expecting it today so don't have the ties for it and haven't cleared it with Bristol Rovers.
TheCumbrians @cusclbontour Where without being blocked by supporters? An idea worth considering, if the club allow.
TheCumbrians @cusclbontour Definitely so! Need to arrange with the club so we get it right behind the goal.

TOPIC: New Laptop needed

New Laptop needed 08 Oct 2025 19:32 #1

Hi folks

Im needing a new ;laptop after old one died suddenly but not unexpectedly :(

Any views on reasonable spec machine please as Im getting confused with whats out there.

I think I need about 8m ram and last machine had a 500g HDD but only used about 240g

Need a at least 15inch screen.

Ive heard SDD are the biz but not sure.

Would pay in region of £600 for one

Cheers

Not sure if you're Carlisle based due to your name, but @HomePC on Newtown Road would sort you out a machine tailored to your needs. Hard to beat for value too...

SSD? Solid state drives are more shock resistant than optical drives but you can't defragment them. I am not convinced they are any faster.

Are you ready for Windows 10? A touchscreen is a big plus. I hate Windows 10 so I've just bought a great refurbished Windows 7 laptop with much higher spec than you need for £200 on ebay.

Agreed, SSD's well worth the money. Far better than HDD's, and speed difference is most definitely noticeable.

@HomePC or DTec will see you right. Steer clear of PC World.

I dont live in the Carlisle area but pass by maybe once a month generally to fill up at Tesco and have a coffee but i might try that HomePC and see what they can offer.

I dont have any objection to a refurbed laptop and would prefer to get one with windows 7 as I hated windows 8.

Im so confused by whats out there just want a decent spec and good build to last me 5/6 years like my old one did.

Aye and not only are they faster they last years and years longer as well. Think you're talking about 10 years until you even start to see any performance degradation.

I'm typing this on a SSD tablet plus keyboard using Windows 10 and every time someone logs in or out of chat it freezes. Windows 10 is better than Windows 8.1 but much less reliable than Windows 7.

Yes I know but it is genuinely hard to compare SSD with HDD in a decent laptop because of the other variables.

SSD's are a lot faster. They will be standard in every machine over the next couple of years. You notice the difference more if you have an external one withe the bit rate speed. As mentioned previously will last a lot longer as there's no moving parts unlike a HDD which comes with its own motor to write the data.

Don't look at the big numbers to decide what you want from a spec of a computer. Look at what you use it for.

I have a Mac pro due to the editing I do but I was just browsing the web the machine would be wasted.

To get SDD in your laptop will cost more money for a little bit extra speed for your data...but do you need it?

I have had an acer l pc for 10 years and it still runs Photoshop and 3d editing programmes. I store everything on external hard drives and my computer just stores the software to run which I think has helped it last so long!!

Regardless of RAM, CPU etc, switch a HDD with a SSD and you will notice a difference.

I bought a company earlier this year called RefurbThat-it sells ex Lenovo laptops and desktops which are very top end and which have been refurbed to new spec as new with warranty.Have a look at the website and if you want to buy, mention my name and that you are a Carlisle fan and we will knock off 10pc.

Thanks guys - love to have SSD sounds good and cheers Laffy your firms stuff looks quality - a friend of mine thinks Lenovo are the bees knees but another reckons the same about Toshibas sigh.

Maybe a reasonably priced refurbed one and a tablet to go with it could be the way Im going.

You'll notice a huge difference with an SSD pal. Instant boot and the split second you've hit enter after entering your password you can get cracking with absolutely anything and even if you fill the thing that performance won't go away for many years.

SSD's are the way to go a lot faster than standard HDD's but to buy a laptop with one already installed will cost a fortune compared to buying a laptop then upgrading HDD to SSD your self as you can pick up a Seagate 1TB 2.5 inch Laptop Solid State Hybrid Drive for around £120 or a true SSD SanDisk SDSSDHII-480G-G25 Ultra II SSD Sata III 2.5-inch Internal SSD up to 550 MB/s Read - 480 GB for a little more . but if you were to buy the laptop with it installed you will be looking to pay double the amount :(

That's one of the best SSDs going. You get what you pay for with PC components so spend as much as you can afford.
