Is there room at the Sands Centre?

Sort of thing that could be incorporated into a wider development? Maybe beside a Football Ground?!

Maybe our mystery developer could suggest this...

Just the one public pool mark. The others dotted about are for people with the various gym/leisure club memberships but in some cases will let you in for an inflated price.
The last time we attended the public pool was the last we will visit.
Now we periodically hire out a private one for the hour. Arkleby being the best of the bunch in that arena.

I always thought the land/car park across from the shepherds inn would be good for pool & ice rink facilities.

Completely separate issues though? This snippet is from the N&S; when the Botchergate plans were announced...

"The county’s main reason for moving is to save money.

It operates from 20 premises in Carlisle including The Courts, a host of Edwardian and Victorian-era buildings in Warwick Road and Portland Square, and the former Capita offices at Kingmoor Park, which it leases.

Moving to a modern building in Botchergate would slash energy and maintenance bills, and reduce the number of staff because there would be only one reception area.

The council will have to borrow £10m to fund the scheme but should still save more than £2m a year, even after servicing this debt. It expects to save as much as £54m over 25 years.

Once vacated, buildings around Portland Square could be sold for conversion into private homes ."

Actually a common sense move to have it all under one roof?

Think it is a brilliant idea. Great exercise for young and old. If you can persuade people to go 2 or 3 times a month it will pay for itself in NHS savings. Why is it even a question whether we build this when we can spend 100bn on Trident, Syria etc etc etc

Tell that to the fire fighters at lazonby and the communities of the Eden valley and Eastern fell side when there's an fire, accident or car crash, and they have to wait for Penrith or Carlisle to turn out. Apparently it's under used? That's actually a good thing because you hope you never need them, emergency services aren't about being fully utilised, there about being there when you need them.

But as stated the building of this new office has no effect on the services, it will probably allow the council to increase it in the future.

what kind of point are you trying to make? we know the cuts are horrible and shouldn't be done to fire services but once against this has nothing to do with it, the cuts are not caused by building a new council office, so your continued point is completely pointless as its out of context, the council are now having to find ways to save money and building a new council office will help, it will reduce the amount of cuts which are made so therefore its not having a negative effect.

How many jobs will this new swimming pool generate also worth noting what are the running costs of the current swimming pool, what will be the impact on the health of the city therefore reduce the costs of the nhs etc people need to start looking at long term effects, but if you don't build and progress life gets worse not better keeping to the status quo does nothing to help us, this city needs investment in health and well being.

couldn't disagree more, it really annoys me that people don't understand how important health is to having a strong economy, healthy people cost far less than unhealthy people, building this will bring money in provide jobs, we have to look at ways of investing in infrastructure therefore reducing costs and increasing money coming in, when you reduce running costs of buildings it then allows you to concentrate on other services. for example in factories you don't keep using an old machine that keeps breaking down ,you buy a new one that has less mean down time which saves you money in the long term.

A new pool will have such a small impact on the overall health of the area it will be virtually zero.
The loss or reduction of key services is horrendous for people that currently rely on them. It remains to be seen wheather these services will ever return.
Personally i would like a pool but surely this is a 'wish list' item as opposed to more essensial services.

Did they really need new offices? Fair enough if they do. However, if you believe the guff about savings they will make, then more fool you, only time will tell on that one. As above, does the city of Carlisle need a new pool more than the Eden valley needs a fire station? or other areas need care homes Why will it generate so much income as you suggest? and why will it create lots of new employment? Surely existing staff will transfer? maybe some extra but not a large number?

This may seem controversial, I believe news like this is actually politically motivated as per usual. Tory govt says to labour council, "you must make cuts". Labour council says "Ok, we'll cut some essential services". And there's the headline. And the same council then suggests building a new swimming pool?

Here is a little fact that anyonne with any knowledge of any sort a maintenance knows old things cost a lot of money old badly built things cost even more, for which the civic centre (biggest waste of money inn the the history of Carlisle not old but a really bad design ),james streets bath and just to add it in brunton park. And of course a new swimming pool will generate more jobs just look at the rest of the country i can see your annoyed about the fire stations we all are but attacking projects that will benefit the city and area around it. AND MY FINAL POINT CUMBRIA FIRE AND RESCUE IS COUNTY COUNCIL AND THIS PLAN IS CARLISLE CITY COUNCIL

A new pool complex would be a brilliant addition to the city also think an ice rink /snowboard ski center would be good too james street is absolutely rank and needs flattened and although pie in the sky our owners should be kicking down the city councils doors to get football ground and training facilties thrown into the mix too .
And for those opposed to it think about future generations instead of wetting the bed when a forward step for the city is proposed .

Considering most on here don't think the viaduct site is feasible for a football stadium & adequate parking I'm not quite sure how they would incorporate a new pool, ice skating rink etc on there.
I do however think the Council, Club and potentially a developer should be looking to work alongside each other to bring this all together into one location the obvious problem being finding a suitable sized site.

I too am a doubter of the savings the council will make.
When you consider like most large organisations they have been prolific wasters of the tax payers money, Bringing down the electric bill slightly is hardly worth it when they have to buy and use services of a select few companies who milk them for every penny. cutting out this and allowing staff to shop around would be a better option.

To me the new pool is an extravagance, a HS2 at a local level. The only way I could see it being justified was if it was a full 50m Olympic pool to act as a training centre or a water park type venue that would draw people in from outside and lets face it if it is to justify itself by making a profit then that is what it needs to do. There are hundreds of private swimming pool barn conversions around the county that you can hire/use why would you traipse to Carlisle pool instead.

Viaduct Estate is nearly half a mile long, with nearby parking at the Castle, West Walls, and top end by the Viaduct. A development on the Estate could see these car parks utilised a lot more at off-peak, bringing in revenue streams...

A well designed complex could easily facilitate a new Football Ground and Pool/Gym facility...

Would also look impressive from the Railway Line, and make folk "Hey Carlisle looks decent, lots of facilities etc".

Regeneration for the benefit of the City, with employment opportunities, sounds ideal...

Can't imagine why someone would chose to build on a brownbelt site like the viaduct with so many stumbling blocks when they could build hassle free on a greenbelt site.

Traffic problems, lack of parking, existing occupants and companies to deal with, limited space, a contaminated area to sort out. Compare this with an out of town site and you can see why clubs choose the latter option.

Clubs go wherever the best deal is, regardless of its Brown or Green...

Much prefer new builds that have been built on old places (Rotherham on a Factory, Sunderland on a Colliery being examples off the top of my head) than out of town ones...

A 50m pool will cost 5-10 times more to operate than a 25m one and needs at least 500,000 people in the immediate vaccinity to make it anywhere near viable. The council is looking to save circa £750,000 a year by making this capital investment in new facilities. James Street is long past its sell by date and we won't have a city pool soon without this project.

By the way remind me again who the rural communities of North Cumbria traditionally vote for? What on earth did they expect to happen?

Think there's roughly a dozen Olympic Standard pools in the Country? Then a number of other 50m ones? But as you say, nearly all in highly populated areas.

We don't need a 50m one here, but do need a modern facility, which as we all agree, James Street is sadly no more...

10 Olympic standard pools and just over 30 50m ones some of which are outdoor lidos - most of these aren't viable without huge subsidies and lots are under threat of closure. Carlisle and Cumbria doesn't need and could not support a 50m pool under any circumstances. It would be like building a 25,000 seater stadium for the Blues or putting a 3,000 seater theatre in the Lonsdale...

Regeneration for the benefit of the City, with employment opportunities, sounds ideal...

on a side note, whatever happened to the supposed new 5-a-side complex that was planned for the old gas works site on Rome street? seems to have gone quiet despite all the interest early on. would that not be big enough for either a footy ground and / or swimming complex?

The viaduct site would be a great site to use and would certainly regenerate a run down area in the City Centre and would look impressive for trains coming in&out; of the station not convinced it's big enough for such a plan especially the transport links although Was part of the plans of moving the baths not to creat a transport hub on that site?
The Goals Centre appears to of went quiet for the Rome Street site again not convinced this area would be big enough to house a stadium complex.

Northwind Leisure (Carlisle) are still an active Company, by looks a subsidiary of the main Northwind Leisure who run the Scottish operation, they're the lot who were behind the Complex. Maybe just waiting for the right time to do it?

aye maybe. an update on the fences would help tough, still has the 'for auction' signs up, well out of date. 'sold' or 'under offer' would help the interest maybe?

Can't see them being allowed to knock down the Turkish Baths at the Pools, Martlew got them grade 2 listed in 2010. Finest example of it's kind in UK.

that would take some explaining to the insurance company, swimming baths burn down.
reminds me of the I.T crowd episode where Roy's girlfriends parents died in a fire at a sealife centre and he spends the episode trying to work out how, contantly saying 'how? it's concrete and water'
