However, in Penrith, at Saturday midnight, belly full of ale, you needed a pick me up before hitting Blues or Toppers. This was it. Mustapha's in Castlegate was a fine establishment, pitta bread absolutely stuffed with doner meat, salad, chili sauce, a feast so big there was always some left over the next morning, sitting sadly on a kitchen worktop congealed in its own lard, a breakfast treat.

Those were the days................

Undoubtedly the best in the business are found at Saajans on Rusholme (or Fallowfield). Chicken tikka, proper kebab salad, and two scoops of the finest chilli sauce you can imagine. Outstanding. The massive difference with Saajans, especially with the chicken, is that you can see them raw in a fridge in a marinade and then they cook it. That's something you could eat sober.

Then you get the dirty doner kebabs that come out of a freezer, impaled on a stick. No thanks.
