That all Premiership games will be playing La Marseillaise before the matches on Saturday. Are we doing the same?

I bloody hope we don't play it, what a stupid idea.

The attacks in Paris were awful and they have my deepest sympathy, but do we really need to start becoming French to show solitude.

There's sadly attacks all over the world, what makes France different to any others. If they play the French anthem then they should play all the other countries national anthems as well that has ever been attacked. I bet they won't play Mali's anthem.

The French one will be played but I am tempted to download the Malian one too. Having been, I love the place.

Didn't see their game last week so don't know what they did before, but maybe Portsmouth will want some sort of tribute to France before tomorrows match, given that one of their ex players cousin got shot dead in it.

The attack in France was no different to the terrible things that happen all over the world. It's the media that decide what is newsworthy.

If it happened in Bongo Bongo Land nobody would give two shits.

It's fearmongering.

If it's done on Saturday, that will be the fourth consecutive Carlisle United first team match that some form of memorial tribute (minutes silence etc) has been done before the game

I'm sure I'm wildly out of step with most people but I find having these things at every match a bit out of place and mawkish. Maybe I'm just totally old fashioned but for me grief is a private thing marked by private reflection rather than a public spectacle.

As sad as the events are the tributes etc were done on tuesday night as a nation. As a country we paid respect to the french... its is now time to try and move on from this without the need for french anthem being played over here.

France - President Jacques Chirac requested that flags in France fly at half mast for 3 days.

Ireland - The Irish Government organised a two-minute silence[11] on Thursday 14 July, at the same time as in the United Kingdom.

Spain - God Save the Queen was played at the changing of the royal guard at Plaza de Oriente in Madrid in memorial to the victims of the attack. The ceremony was attended by the British Ambassador, and members of the Spanish Royal Family. After the Madrid train bombings, the UK hosted a similar ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Moorlad - in regards to the use of the term, yes. I think that's where the similarity ends.

I'm just bloody annoyed by the fact that there is this outpouring of grief. I can't buy into it. What happened was awful and I feel sorry for the people, families and friends caught up and affected by the events. Shit like this happens almost daily all over the world, but because it's Paris/New York/London (delete as appropriate) it turns into a [censored] circus.

The mainstream media don't care when it's the likes of Baghdad or Beirut being blown up. Perhaps people in these places don't matter as much as Parisians?

Social media makes it worse. The likes of Facebook allowing people to overlay the Tricolore on their profile picture as a sign of solidarity is trite and insincere.

Hell, having looked it up, Paris is nearly 100 miles kilometres* closer to London than Carlisle is

It's also not really grief either, in my opinion. Neither is it "mourning". If I'm being really harsh nobody is "feeling their pain" (another overused phrase this week).

These all require a personal loss. I was shocked and appalled by what happened last week. I've been to Paris and recognise the pictures but, crucially, I didn't know anybody there at the time and therefore I am detached from the event. I'd also argue that anyone using the word "empathy/empathise" is overdoing it as well. Unless you've been caught up in a terrorist attack you can't really imagine what it would be like.

I agree.
I remember when we played (I think) Rochdale at home, it was 1993, we had a minutes silence for Bobby Moore who died that week, it was snowing, it seemed somehow right, even though he was a part of the squad who inflicted arguably the most disappointing day we've ever had at Brunton Park. A true great of English and world football though.

In 1997 we had more than one silence for Diana. Ridiculous.

A good point well put. I wanted to say something similar but would have probably worded it in a way that would appear disrespectful to some. I will never forget PNE on boxing day when they had a minutes silence for "everyone who has died this year." Don't get me wrong, there are situations where I feel it is appropriate. But bad things happen all over the world every week. We can't be doing it before every game, it slightly takes the edge off if there is a situation that truly warrants it.

The outpouring of grief always seems a bit false to me on these occasions. A silence is all that's needed.

Probably true judging by the opening of a Turkish barbershop on nearly every parade of shops in the UK.

The shock and horror of the Paris attacks affects us because it is close to home and we think subconsciously it could happen here. We can cope with atrocities in far flung places that we will never visit but many of us have been to Paris or know people who have. The shootings in Tunisia were shocking because they involved British tourists doing something normal which millions of us have also done. I agree it is not really grief or empathy that we feel for the Parisians but a feeling of 'There but for the grace of God', it is almost as though we ourselves have dodged a bullet.

ONS statistics, Northumbrian? You probably believe in Santa Claus and the billionaire. According to wiki in 2011 there were half a million people of Turkish origin in the UK. Given all the immigration by Turkish Kurds over the last few years then that could now be closer to 3/4 million if you include everyone with a link to Turkish or Kurdish ancestry.

If you'd bothered to read your "Turkish Origin" ONS stat: it covers pretty much everyone in the Eastern Med, Greece and the Balkans, not as the OP intended to mean,Turks from Turkey.

I totally agree with this post and you have my best wishes for your daughters health. I've been there twice with my son (when he was 2 and again this year at 5) and it is a hideous experience. The longest wait ever for them to come round afterwards.

I just find the whole solidarity and out pouring of grief thing a bit manufactured. Almost a bit of "look at me, see how in touch I am with world evdnts".
Never mind the atrocities going on all around the world, stick a tricolor over your facebookers profile and hum the Marseillaise and you've done your bit to solve world problems...

Newcastle United are still having a minute's applause at every game for the two fellas that died on MH17, the plane that was taking them to the pre-season tour last year in NZ. When does that stop?

I also remember Stan Petrov having to tell the Villa fans to stop giving him a tribute at every game.

This is possibly taking it to another level, but the way the poppy appeal has been turned in to a circus nowadays also makes me a bit sick. I think the poppy appeal is great, and we will forever be indebted to those that laid down their lives for us, but the some people go on about it is a bit much, when clubs are having a stadium full of cards raised to make a poppy etc.

Pay your respects immediately after the event and then move on, dwelling on stuff won't help - and neither will trying to make it look like you care the most, which is often what I think in these situations that people are doing.
Arise, Sir Jimmy
