TOPIC: Help from Welling

I know it has been referenced on other threads and on the radio but I just wanted to give welling fans a massive congratulations in their own thread.

What a lovely, generous thing to do. To raise that money in such a short space of time from a club who lives on the breadline day to day is a great gesture.

It would be lovely for our supporters club to give them some official recognition in the form of a letter or email. Perhaps some media coverage too.
I love to hear/read these things in difficult times and it just shows the true spirit of fans down the leagues. Thank you very much welling. You have made a lot of new friends in the north.

I just thought that deserved it's own thread.

Maybe give them a pre season friendly and let them keep all the gate money in return? Fantastic gesture.

Quite right as it was their Supporters Organisation that got the bucket collection organised - only right that CUOSC should pen a Thank You note (and sent them a Club Pennant as well)

By the time Nixons took the £500 fee off there'll not be much left for Welling from a friendly.

I know a funds been set up trying to raise £1m but what are they going to spend it on as a matter of interest.

A million thanks to them for their generosity in Cumbria's hour of need.

It's a fantastic gesture and should be applauded.... and rewarded with a pre-season friendly or anything else we can help them with.

@joncolman: Another small gesture of generosity from the folk at Welling. They helped the @newsandstar out with match photos at very short notice but they've declined our offer of payment. Instead they've asked the money to be donated to the Cumbria flood appeal.

Another lovely gesture from Welling, really hope we reciprocate it when we're in a position to do so.

These are fantastic gestures from Welling, the club, and their fans. I agree if there is anything at all we can do for them, once the club is back on its feet then we must do so. Football really is an amazing sport, and the fans are, generally, brilliant people.

Welling United have today put up for auction a match ball from the Emirates FA Cup 2nd round defeat to Carlisle United.

Seriously though it's great to see. As mentioned above exactly the opposite of our dealings with Boreham Wood..... would love it if we could help them out somehow.

Hopefully we'll get Chelsea away in the 4th round and Welling can get permission for an early kick off......

To me they're a club the same size as barrow, and for a club with limited resources to reach out with superb gestures of much needed cash at that level to help us is truly astonishing. They didn't have to do any of this, but they did off their own backs. Welling United will be a team that I will follow/support from afar from now. They made a contribution to the Flood Appeal.

I see where everyone`s coming from but it seems above and beyond to start talking about friendly fixtures to repay them in some way - the travelling costs alone would be a blocker IMHO .....Don`t forget we`re not Mr Moneybags ourselves (that is CU ) and if we invited them up here the same applies

I think the best idea is the London Branch attending one of their matches in the New Year, realistically we're not going to play them in a friendly its too far for either club. This gives something back from the fans on behalf of CUFC.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but Oxford are donating their half time draw money to the fund as well, normally over £1000 supposedly.

It would be nice way to say thank you.

As regards playing a friendly, have we not played Margate and Worcester in recent seasons?

Welling have been a credit to themselves,they didn't have to do anything,could we not donate half of our £27,000 for going through to the next round,we will hopefully beat Yeovil and win a lot more money,then get a big team in the 4th round hopefully.

A nice Thank You letter from CUOSC to their Supporters Association is firstly what`s needed..... then if the London Branch feel they can swell Welling`s gate at some point, then yeah go for it. All other stuff is just OTT I`d say.

A thank you letter is indeed being arranged by CUOSC.

Attending a Welling game at some point would be a lovely touch too, as others have said its a shame they've already played Barrow away.

Good to hear Deano sooner rather than later would be good.

Notts County now the latest club to do something for the flood appeal. Collection buckets at various locations at their match tomorrow, handing over proceeds to the club when we play them next weekend.

Welling United are delighted to announce that our FA Cup matchball has raised £1,000 towards the Cumbrian Flood Fund.

The Wings put the matchball from our FA Cup second round tie with Carlisle United up for auction earlier this week and we were taken aback by the interest.

Operations director Barry Hobbins said: “It’s been an amazing response and we’re most grateful to the winning bidder, an Englishman who works in Malaysia, for his generosity.”

WUSA have already donated over £500 from the raffle at Sunday’s game to the appeal while photographer Keith Gillard’s nominal match fee for supplying pictures from the game to the News & Star has also gone to the fund.

Our thanks to all concerned, and our best wishes are with Carlisle United and all those affected.
