TOPIC: I'm no expert in flooding......

but when it looks like the flood defenses pretty much held around BP, who's bright idea was it to leave a [censored] off big gap to get into the car park?

That picture must be after the worst of it, and it must have receded somewhat because there was talk on the news yesterday of the defences being overtopped.

I worked on the flood defences when they were getting put in and it was said at the time when contractors where doing the job etc that this is what would happen in the event of another major flood. problem is you can raise flood defence banks etc all you like but all it's doing is containing the water somewhere else and holding it back. Also problem with raising banks etc it is just raising the level of the water which then becomes higher than the drain levels hence you get the water backing up them and trying to spill out to find its level. Ie Warwick road and hardwicke circus started to flood when levels were a ft below the tops of defences. You'll never stop Mother Nature and it should be left alone.

You would have expected so mate, yes, but it seems not to have been the case. That must mean that the defences were massively overtopped and therefore nowhere near fit for purpose in Carlisle.

There is, and has been flood-banks around our rivers since Victorian times. Most have not been maintained or managed and have gaping holes in where they were washed away years ago. At the same time to ensure flows of water were kept clear during floods, the sea estuary was dredged to remove the build up of silt and debris at the exit.
Roadside ditches, drains, run-off's, under-road pipework etc was regularly cleaned out and maintained, where water built up remedial action was taken to ensure it did not happen again. All in an effort to promote flow and drainage. The best thing to reduce flooding is good free draining land, however the land was saturated and could take no more.
That was yesterday, a combination of Urban and Rural development on flood-plain combined to a neglect of our exiting infrastructure and Global Warming means we have to think again, and take the necessary action to protect our City and Towns. Eden Bridge in the middle of Carlisle is a massive bottleneck, we need to take some bold steps if this type of disaster is to be avoided in the future.

Am I the only one ( in my sixtieth year ) who has never heard the expression ''overtopped'' until yeaterday.

MPs, councillers, reporters, enviroment agency workers, police,fire and rescue, ''stakeholders'' all at it.

On a serious note my heart bleeds for all those affected, especially if they have been through it before, once the media coverage finishes later this week, leading up to

Christmas, some people are going to be in a very dark place, as a community we all need to rally round.
