TOPIC: Govt announces new Rail Providers through Cumbria

Govt this morning announced the new franchise holders for the Northern (West Cumbria, Settle to Carlisle, and Tyne Valley routes) and Transpenine (Glasgow/Edinburgh to Manchester Airport route) services that pass through our County.

Arriva took over Northern. Main highlights are an increase to 2 trains per hour between Carlisle and Newcastle, full Carlisle to Barrow service, and an extra later service to and from Leeds down the Settle line.

First Group have the Transpenine. A later running Manchester Airport to Glasgow service, improved Sunday service, and new Liverpool to Glasgow route will open up more possibilities to Cumbrian stations.

They start on April 1st 2016, and whilst changes won't be instant, we can look forward to much better rail links in the County. Oh, and those shitty Pacers have to be gone by 2019!!!

The direct Liverpool to Glasgow service is great news - no changing at Wigan on the train for me when that comes in (2018 I believe).

We are lucky to have such good rail links from Carlisle to pretty much anywhere, within reason.
The one train I don't like getting is the one to Newcastle. Fair enough that it serves all the smaller places, but it's a bit painfully slow, with crappy, uncomfortable seats.

Should have added, getting rid of the Pacers is the best bit about this, but I won't hold my breath on that as it's been promised before!

I guess the Government have been looking at the league tables and realised that Newcastle and Sunderland fans will shortly need to be able to access Carlisle regularly over the next few years.

Hoping for better service on the cumbrian coast line..especially south of jamhaven to boost tourism.there are some gorgeous little spots to go in between there and Barra. Hoping more direct links to Preston and Lancaster from out west plus hoping for better sunday service and a later train in evenings.

One company are trying to sell the rail providers refurbed tube carriages to replace the pacers, because obviously we don't need new, decent trains up North and will be happy with London cast offs.

They should be told where to stick their refurbished London junk! From what I have read they will be powered by transit van engines. Makes the dreadful Pacers sound wonderful in comparison. At least they have bus engines.

Ah the Viva Rail class 230? Fudged the crash requirments due to 'Grandfather rights' as they previuosly worked over very small parts of shared tracks.

I'm excited about both what these franchises have promised,though slightly less excited about the fact the DfT's pet uber expensive, Bi mode' trains from Hitachi are likely to be used.

Indeed. Christmas Day AND Boxing Day. After ferrying everyone else to see their families, I have a full 2 days to scoot all ower the parish to see mine. Disgraceful I know. I'd blame the Dalai Lama personally. Gives Corbyn a break and they've done as much as each other regarding contract negotiations!

I hope the job you're going for is as a driver Zebby. Thesilentone is right in the know on these things and he reckons they all get paid more than Wayne Rooney and work about an hour a week. It seems this is all courtesy of greedy union bosses who are all out to feather their own nests and don't care about their members (I don't know how they managed to negotiate such amazing deals for their members while they were looking out for only themselves, but he'll know the ins and outs).
