TOPIC: Mike Edwards

Was going to post this on Saturday when I got back, but it slipped my mind...

Anyway, Mike Edwards still looks about as good as he did for us. I was almost feeling sorry for the guy, he was obviously a decent player 6 or 7 years ago, but he's completely out of his depth these days. Weak in the air, slow to react to things, pushes up far too much and never wins any challenge.

Watching him on saturday made me appreciate what we've got. For all we complain about our defence at times, thank f00k we don't have Eddy playing at the heart of our defence these days. The picture I have in my head of him playing for us was that slow walk back towards the centre circle having conceded yet ANOTHER goal, well it was like deja vu on saturday watching him. Edwards makes Raynes look like Rio Ferdinand in his prime. Sheehan next to him wasn't great either, but he's a left back playing centre back to be fair. What is their manager thinking playing a 5ft 10 left back and Mike Edwards as a centre back pairing against our forwards? Is he Greg Abbott in disguise?

I think he's been over the hill a good while but to be fair to him he was playing in a terrible Abbott side.

According to Lummy at the weekend Edwards was half decent when we signed him, Abbott constantly told him to push onto their strikers which let them turn him easier, rather than playing how he was comfortable doing.

I actually don't think Edwards was too bad on Saturday, there was a lot worse players on show than him. Alan Smith anyone?

Smith wasn't great, but it was their 2 centre backs and goalkeeper that cost them, they quite simply couldn't cope with aerial balls into the box. We were very long ball on saturday, more so than usual.. so credit must go to the management they'd obviously done their homework on how to exploit them.

Edwards was awful for us but he was obviously a steady enough player in his day. He was one of our marquee signings that summer which hardly inspired the fans and so it proved.
He seemed like a decent fella too which is a shame. I don't wish him any ill but I'm pleased he is not with us.

As for Alan Smith. Am I the only one who felt he should have had a straight red for that two footed lunge?
At one time he was to leeds what Gerrard was to Liverpool. Now he is just a thug in an average league two team.

Smith's career has basically been Jamie Vardy's in reverse.

Who did Vardy play for in leagues 1 and 2?
