Cocker mouth's finest producing the best test match innings Ive been privileged to see. 258 runs at number 6. Partnership with Bairstow of 399 a world record for the 6th wicket. If you get the chance watch it, even if you're not a cricket fan.

Well, New Zealander Ben stokes like all the decent 'English' players of late, wasn't even born here and no heritage to England

Lived here since he was 12 and played for Cockermouth. And if you want to be pedantic having a surname like Stokes suggests that there is a definite heritage link. Not exactly Maouri name. Also have you heard him speak? No trace of a NZ accent.

He was born in NZ, to NZ parents so he is NZ. Unlike someone like trott who was born in SA, yet has strong blood links to the uk through recent family

I was born and raised in Australia, to Australian parents with no English in my blood unless you go back to the year 1788 or a little later (I have very little aboriginal heritage). I moved here when I was 14, fair enough I do have a slight Australian accent but it's more certain words than a full on Steve irwin accent, I do hold a uk passport but I'm not British

You choosing to ignore Anderson, Broad, Cook, Flintoff, Root? Probably our most "decent" players in recent years, with the shining exception of KP.

Strauss, pieterson, stokes (and trott as mentioned) prior, Morgan and to a lesser extent Boyd rankin (who was a good limited overs player for England)

That's hardly ALL is it? Cook and Bell have better records than Strauss, Cook better than KP. Morgan you could include for limited overs but Prior was lucky to be in the team when there was a lack of top level WKs in England, should've been binned much earlier.

Would've got nowhere near the team when Alec Stewart was around. Was good for a while, but his test career ran on far too long.

CCU, I was trying hard not to mention that!

What's antecedence?

Him not getting anywhere near the team when Alec Stewart was around is like saying messi would be nowhere near the Argentina team if maradona was around. Different eras mate

Re:Ben Stokes 03 Jan 2026 20:33 #17

He's 24 and was born and lived half his life in NZ to NZ parents, this doesn't make him English, British or Cumbrian whatsoever.

Sure I read somewhere he only lived in Cockermouth for 5 years, less than a quarter of his life, yet folk still call him Cumbrian!

Systematic of all that's wrong with modern day sport, folk just seem to pick and choose who they play for internationally. British sport has barely got any identity left.

"The 'plastic Brit' debate is obviously relevant here, and my understanding is the German team aren't too chuffed. But this is part of the system. British Cycling cannot just look at what they have and make the best of it, they have to take things from other areas.

"If that means taking a rider from another 'area', then so be it. There's nothing underhand. If there was, it wouldn't be legal."

Pretty much sums up how it works now, nothing illegal about it till rules change - never going to happen now. Hindes changed to GB basically as he would have a better chance of Gold I think.

Yep, but was giving a comparison with regards to you calling him, along with the others you/I named as one of our best recent players. To say he was the best WK at the time is true, to say he was anywhere near as good a player as Cook, Broad, Anderson, Flintoff, Swann and KP is wrong.

You need someone behind the stumps though, and he was a pain in the arse with a bat in his hand.

Would you rather have those you listed behind the stumps?

Chopper, it was you that said all of the best English players in recent times had no English heritage, there's only one you list there that would be in the top three, KP, and I gave you that one. If you name the top five, even ten players of 'recent times' Prior would not be in there. He'd be behind Anderson, Broad, Cook, Flintoff, Swann, Bell, KP, Root to name seven off the top of my head.

Edited to add: According to wiki, Matt Prior was born in South Africa, his mother is South African and his father is... English!

Ignoring the comments about nationality here, that innings should have meant it was absolutely impossible for England to lose this test match. However looking at what is currently going on it looks like we might be about to snatch a massive defeat from the jaws of victory.
