The likelyhood it be still a derelict site in a few years time..although flattened out it maybe interesting if it looks big enough for a miracle of a new ground to happen.

There will be no football stadium on that site.
Any development other than a green parkland will need to be on stilts.

No idea why our 'cash strapped' council have pissed away more dosh on what will no doubt be another tinpot failed project.

Let's move from a decrepit old flood risk ground,to a new expensive flood risk ground.

For all the time there has been speculation about the viaduct site, I cannot for the life of me figure out how you would be able to fit a football pitch, four stands, car-parking etc on there.
It simply is not a big enough piece of land.
Added to that, there is no suitable access road in or out, and no plausible way of building one, due to the railway, city centre buildings etc.
Has it really ever been under consideration?

Car parking underneath to serve city and match days and allow area to be flooded, with in-built system to pump out water when water level reduces . Stadium etc designed to use area above railway and the Caldew. Entrance at top of stadium directly from west walls. Entertainment centre / Uni buildings / offices to make it 24/7 use. Traffic flow arrangements to facilitate access and exit on match days onto Castle Way (east and west), down past the baths, and into Denton Holme.

Indeed - even thought about using volume of ground area up to 4 m. as a holding tank for flood water to protect Caldewgate. Plus a new railway station below west walls! Once the market recovers sell all that scrap metal over Citadel station and use space as a park.

Jesus, you've really put some thought into it.
You have to remember that this plan would have to be put in front of Carlisle City Council.
The same council who believe that the answer to increase the city's tourist figures is to put a crossing on the busiest road in Carlisle, so that half a dozen folk per month can have a walk to the castle.

IF the car parks are thrown in it make a combined area of 3.5 Hectares. In real money that is a square of 187 Metres, nowhere near big enough.
If your gonna put it on stilts you might as well redevelop BP on stilts, better still put wheels on it and we can push it nearer to the M6

maybe is only 187 metres square, but football pitches, generally, aren't square.

Football pitch is 7,100 m2. 3.5 has. is 30,000m2. More space available with good design to bring West Walls car park and over rail into play.

Please no, it would just be swapping one flood risk sight for another, a dumb idea.
The stupid council are talking about allowing housing on there as well, totally brainless idea.

On reflection in all the proposed sites to build a new ground the Kingstown/Kingmoor one makes the most sense from being a flood free risk and enough space for all the extra facilities required for a modern football ground eg training facilities.

I've been thinking this is the best option lately too. The viaduct is a great venue location wise but can't see how the traffic situation could work and the river being so close. Saying that when I went to Rotherham's ground that seemed to be in a similar location.

it would only need built up about 3 foot to avoid the flood problems this side of the river.

Unfortunately it's taken the floods for people to start to think with some sense - that BP is not the answer and that if we want a facility that can generate revenue all week, then a large plot would be needed and a move to a small plot would only serve to hold us back. Behind Asda at J44 would be ideal. Easy access from the north, south, east and west. Just need smart thinking about train and inter city trasnsport links to the site which is nothing every other city has't sorted. Makes me laugh when people say, "I'm not travelling up there to watch CUFC"......when they most likely shop at Asda and travel all over the country supporting the blues.

The council moan about not having any cash and funding cuts. Then they pull out who knows how much to buy a derelict, flood prone piece of land with no clear idea what to do with it. Amazing.

Surely the work needed to build a stadium in the space available and with the flood risk would make it incredible expensive and therefore unfeasible? Im far from an expert but would it not be cheaper and easier to build it somewhere that's bigger and never going to flood?

Why?

It's easier for the folk up that end of town. It's easier for those out West. It's as easy for away fans. Those in Warwick Road area it's one junction up the motorway.

Am I missing an obvious reason?

It's in the middle of nowhere with no public transport links. People don't want to have to drive to the football and pay another five pounds to park. People want to have a drink before the match and/or be able to walk there from town.

Makes you wonder what might have been with a bit of foresight and planning given that there is £37 billion of tax payers' money earmarked for rail transport development over the next five years. A new station costs less than £1.5m.

I live in Denton Holme and work at KP. 15mins drive up the by-pass, and buses pass my window about every 20 to 30 mins. The north of the river has expanded massively over the last few years, best option by far in my view.

A definite no for the viaduct site from me.

! ~Flooding,, raising the site would add dramatically to the cost, not raising it would mean the insurance would be astronomical if possible to get at all.

2. Gridlock, traffic is very slow in that area now, with a 6k gate it wouldn't move at all.

3 No training facilities. Barnet impressed me today. Not the stadium but the rest of the facilities on site were light years ahead of what is available in Carlisle. There were 4g pitches, a pitch for the youth team, three or four training pitches, a gym and goodness knows what else all on the Barnet site. Absolutely no chance to fit all that on the viaduct site, but modern training facilities are crucial if the club is to move forward, so you are talking of not only a stadium complex but also a training complex somewhere else, can't see that being affordable.

Around ten times as many people live within a 2 mile radius of BP or the viaduct compared to the proposed kingmoor site. Casual fans will not make the effort to get on an uncomfortable packed bus or drive up there are be charged to park in the middle of nowhere. Out of town away grounds such as Wycombe and Northampton have always seemed to lack soul

Not impossible! The tracks fun right upto there and they could have a dedicated line. Also built with further development ie shops, hotels, restaurants entertainment etc bit like Bolton then a hourly shuttle would pay for itself! However for this to happen you need a board that has vision and influence with council errrm maybe not then!

Recalling that Carlisle has (the excellent) policy of not having out of time Malls, the Kingstown option could prove to be the most expensive and provide a facility that is only used 50 days a year. The viaduct option would present a superb opportunity to enhance Carlisle centre.

However, while it may be fairly easy to raise the land a few metres to avoid flooding, if the flood water does not go there other areas would be more badly affected.

Hence my idea of having the development over a floodable area (say car parks) that could actually reduce problems in Caldewgate and allow for use of flood defense £'s (£2.3 billion available) .

Probably a dream - but if 1,000m3 = 1 million litres a facility to have up to 4 m depth over 35,000 m2 (140,000m3) would be 140 million litres removed. As the Eden (I don't have the number for the CAldew) was flowing at 1,700m3 per second at its peak in December this would be 22 hours of relief. Of course my maths is probably up a flooded shit creek and its possibly 22 seconds!!

Anyone who has been to Colchester's 'New' ground and had to pay to sit on a clapped out bus the council don't deem worthy anymore after a few beers in town wouldn't recommend a move up to Kingstown. A horrible experience and one that no one would enjoy having to go through week in,week out.

It really would turn away more supporters than it would gain. Then what are you going to do, drive to the ground so you wouldn't be spending cash on beer thus taking cash out of the club.

I agree that town centre would be best but where has the space that is not on a flood plain? Interesting that those 5 aside pitches have never been done down by the old gas works? Don't think the traffic could cope down there but it needs to be somewhere with a similar size?

Remember it was announced Carlisle will gain Enterprise Zone status. To allow for investment, we need to be able to offer sites/facilities. If not used for this, it will most definitely be used for our creative Councils income stream...car parking.

I agree that town centre would be best but where has the space that is not on a flood plain? Interesting that those 5 aside pitches have never been done down by the old gas works? Don't think the traffic could cope down there but it needs to be somewhere with a similar size?

Morton Manor. Mind it could be difficult getting planning permission.

Why does everybody assume that just because we build an out of town stadium it'll be the same as the badly built ones they've been to ? Perhaps we'll learn from their mistakes.

The argument that out of town grounds lack a soul is a fallacy, it's upto the architect and the fans to give a ground one. I've been to just as many shit "old" stadiums as I have new ones.

I wonder if folk had arguments like this when they were originally building places like BP, all grounds will have been out of town in the past, until the towns and cities grew around them.
