i tweeted a reply to John Colman when he tweeted about naming and shaming the individual for the 'alleged racial comment. the person responsible will not be named due to age or intelligence......and i still stand by that.

was it racial chanting or reaction?

i also think, in relation to national service, that teens should be set a minimum target around education. pupils with low or no grades should be given a choice by 18. National Service or an apprenticeship/further education until 21.

Wasn't me who said that mate. I find my memory is nowhere near what it used to be, I remember my number because it was just about battered into me, I also remember the letter it started with, for similar reasons, but there was something about the numbers where you could actually work out what the prefix letter was, but I can't remember how to do that.

Back to the national service issue though, I think it would be an appalling thing to do to be trying to train a mass of uninterested youngsters to be less than half useful in the field and then send them to some of the ridiculous places we expect our forces to serve these days. It would not only be dangerous for them, but even worse for the people who would have to look after them while they are there. The regular forces, and to a greater extent than ever before, the reserves and territorials are more professional than they've ever been, mainly because there are fewer than there've been for years. An influx of half arsed youths who really don't want to be there would inevitably water down the efficiency and effectiveness of our troops.

I'm absolutely all for youngsters being employed, and being usefully employed, but national service is very much a pointless option in my view. I think in a lot of people's eyes it is something that will instill discipline in people, but to be fair that is not always how it works. Any of the lads on here who have served in the forces will be able to tell you tales of people they served with who rebelled constantly against the military discipline, and they were volunteers! It would be massively worse if there were thousands of people who didn't want to be there at all. Forces life has a great deal of merit for some people, but it certainly does not suit everybody, and I honestly would not want to lumber the armed forces with trying to sort out some of the youth of this day and age. The ones who would be of most use to the services are not going to be the ones who would be forced into service anyway, so for me it is an absolute non starter.

Why no suggestions of forcing them into the care system, or anything like that, why just military service?

They have national service in Norway but you can get out of it easily. I know people who have been there for less than a day and back to work the next day.
I'm not sure about it here,my trade has over a years trade training so that sould be a waste of time. I think there's too many lawyers ready to sue for it to work.

It suited me, because I played rugby and was very fit (believe it or not) when I joined. I was also that bit older, nearly 21, so was able to knuckle down knowing that it wouldn't be like basic training all the time. But there were some lads who found it to be absolutely horrific. Young lads crying every evening after being treated like shit all day, every day. There are plenty of people it wouldn't suit at all, but if there are people who want to challenge themselves, and want to be fit and active and don't mind being away from home, I'd certainly recommend it to them.
