Premier league gave extra £1million to prize fund to make it £1.95million prize fund. Not a lot is it
£1 million divided by the 64 clubs entered gives an average figure of just over £15,000. That's less than the gate money from one home game. In fact most will receive far less of the Premier League money than this with the bigger prize money going to those which progress furthest.
It's supposedly done to help the Premier League and the England team.
How many players from our League play England Internationals? Why does the Premier League, with all their money and resources need help from the Football League?.
It's more about the blazers involved at the FA and Football League than anything else.
Interesting to look at the current England squad and see how many of them started their careers at FL level...
Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster*,
Joe Hart (Shrewsbury Town), Tom Heaton*.
Defenders: Ryan Betrand*, Gary Cahill*,
Nathaniel Clyne (Crystal Palace),
Danny Rose (Leeds United),
Chris Smalling (Maidstone United),
John Stones (Barnsley),
Kyle Walker (Sheffield United)
Midfielders:
Dele Alli (MK Dons), Ross Barkley**, Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson**,
Adam Lallana (Southampton), James Milner**, Raheem Sterling, Jack Wilshere.
Forwards: Harry Kane*, Marcus Rashford, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge,
Jamie Vardy (Stocksbridge Park Steels)
Shows that a decent number of the England squad started their careers at clubs in either the Football League or below. The ones with one * made their professional debuts in loan spells at FL clubs, while the two ** had loan spells at FL clubs at some point.
