TOPIC: A good thrashing

I'm now in my 36 season as a fan and over that time I've seen us take quite a few hidings but which ones have been the worst/most memorable or funniest.
Here are a few of those that stick in mind:
1. Peterborough away. Hit for six. Six down at half time. So drunk that day. Circa 1997/98.
2. Another six away at Rochdale. Ian atkins in charge. Fans were incredible that day. Nothing to play for so we sang and sang all through.
3. Blackpool and Wigan away circa early 90s. Wigan in the cup. Twice hit for 5 in a really gutless showing with a huge cufc support there.
4. Bradford away. 0.4 under abbott near his end. Could have been 20.
5. 0.5 away at Cambridge.last game for kav.
There are many more but they stand out.

Edit..Millwall away too. Day started with thoughts of championship and ended with thoughts of how things can go so so wrong.

6-1 away at preston under kavanagh was awful, everything seemed to go wrong that day.

Think it was 6-1 at home to Hull, Jon Walters getting a hat-trick, Matty Glennon took some abuse from their lot that day.

Yeah I was at that one too. Crawled into my shell after that one.

I was at Luton on my own at the 6-1 first away game of the 1973-74 season. We were 6-0 down at half time. I staggered to the bar and asked for a brandy. Nothing at all identified me as a carlisle fan but the barman served me a double and only charged for a single. I later saw a 5-0 and a 3-0 there. Have hated Luton ever since.

Seen them beaten 6 quite a few times. Wrexham on an Easter Monday, Blackpool, Rochdale, Preston the other year, but by far the worst was Bury in the early 90's when we were 6-0 down at half time.

Most disappointing hammering undoubtedly 4-1 away at Leeds Road in the AWS northern final. Closest we'd ever been to Wembley in my lifetime and didn't think we were ever going to get another chance (hindsight a wonderful thing). Lad called Iain Dunn took the piss that night for Huddersfield.

Another good bad one was a5.0 humping at Bolton in about 1987. My only time at burnden park.
We sat in the main stand opposite the couple of hundred other Carlisle fans. The ground and crowd seemed huge to me at the time. Checking back, I think there was only alt 5000 there. Just shows how things look through young eyes. We had a decent team then too.

God , I was at all of them. Bury away was awful.

The ones that spring to mind were the hammerings we took under Abbott just before he got sacked. He spent that summer putting together the worst squad I've ever seen.

Carlisle 1-5 Leyton Orient (could have been 10 )
Bradford 4-0 Carlisle (as mentioned above, could have been 20)
Carlisle 0-4 Coventry (a man of the match performance from Gillespie prevented it from being double figures).
All within the space of a few weeks. I think Leicester knocked 5 past us in the cup as well during this time.

Kavanagh got credited with our relegation that season, but anyone would have struggled keeping us up after inheriting that shower of shit.

The most enjoyable thrashing we got was again under Abbott. 3-0 away at Huddersfield in the JPT area final. Could and should have been about 10, but luckily we kept it to 3 and went through on aggregate. Wild celebrations after a 3-0 defeat

5 nil away v Lincoln 4th March 2000
6 nil away v Rochdale 10th April 2001
1-6 away v Tranmere ( FA Cup 2nd round ) 8th December 2001
1-5 home v Hull 1st March 2003
1-6 away v Wrexham 21st April 2003
1-5 away v Crewe 30th September 2006
5 nil away v Swansea 16th December 2006

The Southampton game was in January 1977. In September 1980 Chesterfield also put 6 past us at Brunton Park.

Another bad away defeat was under Roddy Collins at Swansea when they put five past us with McDonagh getting sent off.

Fulham 5-0 was a long [censored] day out like. Didn't we also get a hiding at Halifax a couple years after that? I was there but can't remember the score. Was at most of the games Tony Hemmings lists. The most disappointing for me was 4-0 away at Torquay when we were on a fairly decent run with half a chance of avoiding relegation to the Conference.

Getting beat 1-4 by Southampton at Wembley in 2010 was pretty hard to take, especially as we had a fairly decent team at that time. Murphy gave away that penalty and you just knew where the game was going.

Been at some absolute battering's 5s and 6s, but the worst was a 4-0 away at Scarborough in the FLT back in the early 90's the trophy back the was played in a group format and we had already been beaten in our first game, and the match was a dead rubber that needed fulfilling for the record books, would have been 10 of us in the away end, never met anyone who ever admitted they'd been at the game since bar myself, but there were others there, maybe folk just erased it from their memory banks as it remains for me the worst ever performance I've seen from United, I've seen other games where teams have scored more goals against us but that day we were horrific.

6-1 away at Luton the season we won promotion to the old First division.

There was a thread about first home and away games on the other board a few years ago, which included the above 2-6 shoeing at home to Chesterfield coupled with going down 0-3 to Luton - not many will beat that aggregate. The first was almost repeated by Leicester City (2-5) in the League Cup as someone mentioned. That was a fun evening at Brunton Park, we scored the first and last goals and they could have had about 12 in between!
Cambridge, Bury, Bradford, Wigan and Fulham also stick in the memory as does that 5-0 thrashing at Bolton when Wayne Harrison had to be drafted in for I'm fairly sure his one and only game.

I also remember going to Lincoln around 1991 time to see us get thumped by 6 I think. 6.1 I think it was and if memory serves me well, we scored first from the spot.
We had a terrible team that year. I remember the llbest two were Ian Dalziel and Paul proudlock.

Because of the occasion, the costs in getting to and staying overnight in London, the fact that the match being on live TV was showcasing the City and the football team AND most importantly we were truly stuffed it has to be Southampton at Wembley 4-1, it really could have been double figures for Southampton that day - they stopped trying after an hour or so and allowed young Gary Madine to sneak in for a "consolation" goal. They were way too good for us on the day, men versus boys.

I remember the 2nd Leg of the league Cup Final v West Brom. We went with high hopes after a narrow 1st leg win, 1-0. They ground us down in the finish 4-0 I think. 1968?

Yes I would agree that the game v Southampton at Wembley was the most humiliating Carlisle performance I have ever seen, in the context of everything (and I was at that Bury game!), we seemed to have a few tankings at home as well under Greg.
When I first became a diehard fan, in the late 80's and early 90's we took a few thrashings, saw them got beat 4/5/6 several times away.
Blackpool, Doncaster stick in my mind.
Used to go to games genuinely thinking I would be happy if we got beat 2-1, then at least we had something to cheer.
Funnily enough the sense of being a martyr and going back for more was quite a good feeling and when we finally had some success it was amazing.
There was a similar cycle in the noughties.
This decade has been different we have turned into kings of mediocrity.
Unlike the older generation, my default setting is of us being useless, so I don't really think of us as belonging in a higher position.

Jose Fonte became the first player to won the JPT and European Championships.

I can't agree with the Southampton 4-1 tanking at Wembley!

I know it's a lot of hindsight to be fair but they had a team containing Michail Antonio, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Jose Fonte, Morgan Schneiderlin etc they were a class above.

I also remember feeling overwhelming pride with our fans that day as we were phenomenal.

Worst for me was Peterborough away 6-0 what a tanking that was

Remember 1982,we got stuffed at Burnley 4-1 ,we then went to Leicester and got pummelled 6-0 both Lineker and Lynex got hat tricks.If memory serves we then got butched at Bolton in the league cup mid week .
Turned up at Brunton Park on the Saturday expecting some of the same,we turned over Palace 4-1 Poskett bagging them all!!!

What about the turn around from our last away match when we won 2-1 away at Chesterfield to the turn round first game of the next season in the league above and they walloped us 3-0. Talk about knocking the wind out of our sails. Maybe not 5 or 6 but we didn't recover all season.

I can recall the 6-2 home defeat to Chesterfield being great entertainment - the way to lose a game.

6-1 at Preston was a low and some of the away performances under the bus driver Wilkinson stand out for all the wrong reasons. They were particularly disorganised in the 4-1 defeat at Torquay.

5-0 at Colchester was also bad at the end of John Ward's time here and we had some half decent players in that team like Hackney, Graham and Livesey...

Many of mine have already been mentioned... Not a thrashing per se, but the 3-1 defeat away at Accrington during Curle's first season in charge was one of the most gutless performances I've ever seen from us. We were just terrible. Accrington should be ashamed they only managed to get three.

Stockport county on a Friday night shipped 5 in I think tried to leave early to get to chippy before coming home police wouldn't let us so had to endure it tofinal whistle. Then they held us back then the chippy ran out of fish then we put the wrong fuel in van and got towed back to Carlisle about 6 in morning

Not the best away trip ever....

A couple of 80s home thrashings not mentioned above:

May 1985 Carlisle 2-5 Oldham - a late Scott McGarvey pen (remember him?) gave the score some slight respectability.

October 1985 Carlisle 0-4 Norwich - absolutely hammered having taken a group of non-CUFC supporting mates along for my birthday. Robert Rosario on the scoresheet for the visitors.

That Coventry 0-4 possibly the worst for me, it was also the first game I took my missus to. We were 0-2 after about 4 minutes and 0-3 after about ten as I recall so the game was completely devoid of hope or entertainment from the outset. The performance was a total shambles and the worst of the "Mike Edwards defence" era when we had that spell under Abbott of letting in 4 what seemed like every game.

I remember the 2-5 defeat. But can't remember the goal scorers.

We were beaten in the Southampton Final as soon as the teamsheet went in and that clown picked his mates instead a team to get a result. In recent times the Bradford 4-0 and Coventry 4-0 both should've been over ten easily and were as embarrassing as they come but yet you still had fans defending the performances on the day.

I'm yet to wipe those hideous displays from my memory.

Ones that I had wiped from my memory include the five shipped at Home to Hull and Away to Swansea&Colchester; so cheers for dragging them up. I did the JPT Huddersfield Away 'success' too.

We got beat 6-0 at Blackpool one year although I cant remember which, I know we were well in it for at least the first two minutes

Just to add the 1996 0-4 tanking away at Oxford. What an awful journey back that was.
