I think you may well be close to the truth, Moorlad. It's more than likely that they're still hiding behind this fantasy they've invented, and are now scuttling around behind the scenes desperately attempting to dig themselves out of this hole they're now in. In short, they've backed themselves into a corner, and are now probably under far more scrutiny than they ever expected.
I've seen one or two people say 'why are people so certain there is no billionaire'. Just to be clear on this, my reasons would be as follows.
1. The motive. The events of the last few days show they were probably planning to stab AL in the back all along, but because of his huge popularity they probably realised they couldn't do it without some sort of alternative which people may accept, and which wouldn't result in riots outside BP when they finally got around to doing what they did last week. Obviously the imaginary billionaire was intended to be that very smokescreen, but as with most things those two do, it's all gone a bit wrong..
I think they were most likely prepared to go the whole way with the Lapping deal, until there was a fall out with Pattison, then they hatched the plot to get rid of him, and just use some of his ideas, rubbish him in public, invent a new buyer and come out smelling of roses.

2. The timing of it all was just far too convenient. The evening before AL was due to announce the appointment of the new MD - and therefore realistically push the deal past the point of no return - this billionaire just happens to appear out of the blue, promising fortune and glory beyond our wildest dreams. I mean...seriously?.
That was the thing that I really got suspicious about. For 6 years they had been trying to find a buyer and there was no interest at all, then there's the Lapping job and right away there's yet another one. I have even asked directly in the past if there had been any interest in the club, and been told no.

3. It's far too suspicious that literally the only two people who supposedly know the identity of this person are Jenkins and Nixon. If this person did actually exist, none of us would actually be demanding to know their identity as we'd all realise there could be genuine reasons for some level of discretion; but at the very least, we'd simply want someone we trust - be it a fans' rep, CUOSC board member, or whatever - to be told; not so they could then pass it on, so they could simply say to the rest of us "Yes I now know who it is, and I can confirm that in fact they do exist - now calm down the bloody lot of you"..
This is one of the most important points, there is no reason that somebody trustworthy, Lord Clark, for f
uck's sake, how much more trustworthy can you get than a peer of the realm, should not have been told who it was, and shown evidence that he/she exists.

4. It's now simply been going on for far too long. Even if the billionaire was real, if they actually revealed themselves at this stage, I honestly believe that this climate of bad feeling, resentment and suspicion that has been created by endless weeks of secrecy would instantly put them on the back foot with the fans, and at the very least I think they'd have a major PR job on their hands just to repair that trust.
I completely agree with this point, any new arrival now will be viewed with nothing but suspicion, why so secretive? What were the talks about? Why not want us to know you? etc etc.
Your opening paragraph is right, they expected us to swallow the lot hook, line and sinker and just not ask any questions. Then when it got heated there was panic, they lost their nerve and invented a stupid story they can't back down from. As you say they've painted themselves into a corner. To get out of it they have to produce a billionaire.
