Right Midfield & Left back are two weaknesses - hopefully these gaps will be filled before next Saturday.

As well as Liddle played today, I think he'd be even more effective in centre mid. He's clearly an excellent passer, good positionally and could give us some control sitting in front of the back 4.

I've no idea about left back now. Probably worth trying Ellis there, we've tried everything else and F all is working. Or could Brough be any worse than what we currently have til Grainger's back?

Gillespie
TMiller Raynes Gillesphey Ellis
Kennedy Liddle Joyce Adams
SMiller Wyke

Putting Liddle into midfield let's Kennedy loose a bit. I feel when Kennedy is in a mid 2 with Joyce it holds him back a bit. So same tactics as when we were good, but Liddle as a direct replacement for Jones.

Totally agree with this team, I think we are starting to panic a little bit with some of the changes.

The above team is more or less the one which went on the great unbeaten run minus Jones and Grainger.

Replace them with Ellis and Liddle and stick with it.

Ibehre on the bench if he's back fit to come on after an hour, Brisley or Gillesphey, or both, on the bench to give the option to push Liddle into midfield.

Go back to what we know has worked in the past. This must include:

Playing 442
Having Kennedy and Adams on the wings
Wyke as one of the two strikers
Playing two defensive centre midfielders
Gillespie in goal
Not playing Gillesphey at left back
Not playing Brisley or Devitt at all

Simple

Looks like he needs a rocket up his arse most of the time. Very similar player to meppen walter, When he reads the game or pings it 50 yards it looks great but they get caught out more times then enough

in my opinion Gillesphey is much better playing at CB than LB. Ellis has played in the LB position for one game this season and was more reliable than any other player to play there but for Grainger. if you look at CCU's post further up you will have your update there.

Yes that's the exact line up I would have gone with on Saturday. Infact that's what I though Liddle had been brought in for, don't know what goes through curles head sometimes???

Curle did mention that Rayne's only had 45mins in the tank after being ill.....but I don't understand why Ellis was not in for Brisley and opting for Liddle at the back.

I think it's clear enough why he opted for Liddle there on Sat: The defence has been shipping goals for fun, Raynes was not fully fit and Elis did not impress last time out. He hasn't been fancied all season either, so how can you expect Curle to put him now when the whole defence is in disarray? His priority was to shore up the defence, Liddle played there at Notts. under Curle. We'd probably all like to see Liddle in mid. but totally understandable why he was in defence on Saturday as far as I can see. Unless, you just want to have a swipe at KC??

Ellis was as bad as Brisley at Colchester. Thats probably why neither played.

Starting Brisley is giving the opposition a goal start. A ball over the top of him is a banker for the forward he is marking.

We need to bring a left back in this week. It's all well and good saying that you'd put Ellis there, but I wouldn't want him in the centre of defence, his natural position, never mind out of position on the left. I know he played there once and did OK, but that doesn't mean he's the answer. Ideally we could bring someone in on a month or 2 deal until Grainger comes back rather than a loan deal until the end of the season or a long term contract but it is something that needs sorting.

Pretty much everyone is agreeing on the midfield and forwards, and if we brought a left back in the majority would be playing the same back 4.

Liddle playing in front of the back three will protect them. Brisley is a better footballer than Ellis and time will show this.

People rabitting on who best option is at left back. Ffs we have a lb that is out on loan and playing games surely he is a better option than playing square pegs in round holes. It really is the simple answer but unfortunately curle doesnt see it. 3 players have been played there in Ellis, mcqueen and gillesphey. Ellis if playing needs to be playing cb, mcqueen needs to be f**ked off back to London where he comes from and not sure where gillesphey fits in at the minute as not good enough to be playing lb and should be behind Ellis in cb pecking order. Asfor saying Brisley is better than Ellis. Are you joking?? Brisley shouldnt be anywhere near the starting 11. Absolute clart he is.

I dont know which of our defenders are specialist left backs or centre backs playing out of position. From what Im reading we have no natural left backs apart from those out on loan? One thing I do know is playing as a full back is completely different to playing centre back. You have to be a lot fitter and faster for a start. Any team that attacks us down that side and we are always in trouble. Im not convinced by our gk either. He may be a good shot stopper when the ball is a nice height but hit in hard and low and 9/10 out of 10 its a goal. He hasnt got a clue on crosses or positioning either.

I was a left back in my playing days, should we sign me up for Saturday?

Just because Brough is a left back, doesn't mean he's good enough to play there at this level.

Thats the problem - we dont have a left back in the quad and none of the cb's are good enough to play in that position at this level.

I was meaning a short term contract for a player currently without a club, a la Asamoah.

Edit to say the Asamoah we signed last year, not this one.

Contracts normally run 'til June of each year. Players out of contract now are normally not that good. Otherwise only option on monthly loans is from non league.
Loans for half season or permanent signings are normally the only options at this time of year..

We've given 3 contracts to players in that situation so far this season, so there are players out there. Granted they've all been a complete waste of money this year but they have been used to good effect in the past.

Thats the problem - we dont have a left back in the quad and none of the cb's are good enough to play in that position at this level.

McQueen played at LB during his Spurs years. He was signed as being able to play either side. Which makes Saturday's idea of Miller on the left even more bizarre IMO!

We've given 3 contracts to players in that situation so far this season, so there are players out there. Granted they've all been a complete waste of money this year but they have been used to good effect in the past.

bob harris has been without a club since the summer

So we know Liddle is playing left back, so I'd expect us to lineup like this.

Gillespie
T.Miller Raynes Gillesphey Liddle
Kennedy Devitt Joyce Adams
Ibehre Wyke

Your likely correct Crunchblue, massive waste of Liddle at LB though but it's a real problem position.Would be tempted to play 3 at the back with Adams and Miller as Wing backs ,the only draw back is that it may effect Adams and we loose some of his offensive threat.

Gillespie
Miller Raynes Gillesphey Ellis
Kennedy Liddle Joyce Adams
Wyke S.Miller

I think reading the threads this is the team that most people want although playing Gillesphey normally means conceding at leat 2 goals but he's better as a CB than a LB.

Basically the same team as I said on the Liddle to left back thread. Got a feeling he might just play McQueen at left back though.

I did like Wake but not sure he is the answer now.
