I will go for the obvious choice in Mike Edwards, came on big money and had a fairly decent pedigree and was pants.
While we moan at our defence last season with Edwards in the team the opposition had a three goal start usually.
When Aspatria gave him the runaround then it was time to go, I believe he is still stealing a wage at Notts County and just like us he was instrumental in their downfall.

Recent years? So say 2000 onwards?
Edwards not even in the top 5!
How about John Inglis, Phil Gulliver, Des Byrne, Paul Warhurst and Shaun Smith?!
Early 00's dross the lot of em...

Harsh on Warhurst. Played one game (on as a sub, if I remember correctly). Can win the award for 'Most disappointing signing' hands down but didn't have time to be called dross!
My vote would be for David Beharall.

I class recent years as last 5 or 6 years, so Mike Edwards by a country mile.
There are players who've played one game for us, but it's hard to make a fair judgement on one game... where as Edwards was consistently shite for us.
That defence that Abbott put together at the start of the 13/14 season, with Edwards at the heart of it, is the worst defence I've ever seen and there have been some bad ones! The games we lost 4 and 5 flattered us, and if it wasn't for some poor finishing and great goalkeeping we would have deservedly conceded double figures in each of those matches.

Kevin Feely was the worst loanee of the Abbott omnishambles defence.
Mike Edwards was a disastrous signing as outlined by crunchblue.
David Beharall's ineptness over a sustained period made him one of the most unpopular players since Kevin Rose.

What was the name of that Italian left back from about 5 years ago, we gave him a 2 year contract. Think he played twice, then left by mutual consent.

The worst defending performance I can recall was by Josh Gowling. He had signed a 2 year contract for us, he played 4 times then was sent out on loan for the rest of his contract he was considered to be that bad.

Darren Kelly. Utter shite. Came in for big money as "the best defender in Ireland." F@&k; me I wouldn't like to see the second best defender in Ireland.

Of players who played a decent number of games Mike Edwards is the obvious stand out, likewise Darren Kelly if we're going back that far.
Thanks CCU for dredging up the nightmare that was Shaun Smith (was he on loan from Hull??)
Beherall had a decent game in the play off final IIRC.
As a one off though I can't think of a worse debut (or performance for that matter) than Harry Worley, subbed at ht and should have been sent off beforehand, utter clart.
Didn't see the ridiculous random loanees Abbott brought in before being sacked but I'm guessing Feely, Black and Butterfield weren't up to much

Liam Cooper's horror show performance at Peterborough seals his admission to the short list. Hard to believe our side that day featured Ben Marshall, Nahki Wells, Paddy Madden and Harry Arter!
If the world didn't suck, we'd all fall off.

The time Roddy Collins played Steve Livingstone at centre back, I thought was the worst.

We signed a centre back call Knight (?), he had been so badly injured he walked with a limp. Played once in a 4 3 home defeat to Walsall. His centre back partner was Simon Jeffels

Was that the season opener where Oghani scored at both ends?

Seem to remember Simon Jeffels himself being absolutely awful, didnt he once get sent off at Burnley for clattering one of their players on the half way line? who incidentally wasn't causing us any problems. Brain dead springs to mind!

Collins signed him, Livingstone got banned and by the time he was back Collins was gone.

Some horrible names I'd rather forget in this thread. Matt Young was pants I recall? Never rated Paul Thirlwell as a defender, times were dark when he was needed there!

Sean McGinty was absolutely terrible in his short time for someone who came through at United with Paul Pogba. Changed his boots 4 times one day. Some of Abbott's loanees were utterly awful - Paul Black, Ben Pearson, Kevin Feely... dark times.

Still was better then the right winger , never turns up and every time they attacked would quickly make a U-turn

I can't believe Pascal Chimbonda hasn't been mentioned yet. People only rated him because he had a 'name'. He should've stayed at Market Drayton Town..

I always thought Chimbonda would have been better suited to a holding midfield role because his legs had totally gone and i don't think he was anywhere near strong enough to be a centre half.
Sean McGinty played about 3 minutes for us.
