Good Old Unions....It appears that allot of Tube Drivers are partially disabled..........

"Tube drivers call in sick almost four times more than other Londoners, taking nearly three weeks off every year compared to the average of three-and-half days for other workers in the capital.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics show that nationally British people each took 4.4 days off in 2014, while Londoners took just 3.5 days.

But statistics revealed by Transport for London in response to a Freedom of Information request from ITV News revealed that drivers report sick on average more than 1,000 times a week, taking 14 days a year per person.

Union officials explained the discrepancy by saying that drivers were banned from working while taking medication because of the nature of their job.

"London Underground have a policy that drivers can't book on if you're on under any prescribed medication at all," Steve Hedley from the RMT union said.

"You can imagine if somebody's on medication it makes them drowsy," he added. "If that person is working in a shop, perhaps you'll get the wrong change, if it's a driver then lives are at risk."

Imagine if the same rule applied to plane, train, bus, wagon and car drivers. The Country would grind to a halt !!

It does to pilots, well it certainly did when I was in the RAF, to be fair I have been out for nearly 20 years.

Sssshhh Dont tell him that Moorlad. Id imagine If London underground have that policy it was brought in for good reason. Theres plenty over the counter medicines that warn against operating machinery never mind prescription ones. At a wild guess id say a underground train is a piece of machinery?.

Oh, sorry, I assumed (because of the nature of his Daily Mail inspired rants) that he genuinely didn't know it might be dangerous to operate heavy machinery whilst your judgement is impaired. It seems he doesn't mind operating his gob while his judgement is impaired.

My mate Olly is a tube driver....you wouldn't believe the crap they get in to if they miss a red light or overshoot one by even 10 ft...he reckons you have to be 100% on your mettle every drive or you end up causing massive problems or worse.
The 'cause of Sick Days" probably fails to acknowledge that tube drivers are victim of suicides frequently too....it's the weapon of choice for a lot of people to jump in front of a tube train.
My mate was just leaving the station in his train a couple of years ago, he said he saw what was going to happen at the end of the platform but he couldn't do anything about it before she waited till the very last second and stepped out in front of him at full tilt, she looked him square in the eye as she hit his window.
It left him very shaken up and having nightmares for weeks after....his occupation health and councillor recommended he had a couple of months off and have a holiday, anything to help him calm down, relax and forget...
Sounds like the job from hell to me, I don't blame them for having sick days.

You're right on the rest. When I was on the Underground, I had a course taken by an ex-Driver, he said you weren't deemed a real driver until you'd had 'one under'...

Oh dear, what will those poor lambs down in London do? - the strike may as well be in Australia as far as most of us on here care.

If the underground is closed then how will the immigrants get shuttled around?

Entry requirements
You do not always need specific qualifications to be a train driver, although most employers will expect you to have a good general standard of education, including GCSEs in maths and English. Some mechanical or electrical knowledge may also be useful. You could check with train operating companies directly for details of vacancies for trainee drivers.
Another way into this career is to start work in the rail service doing another job, for example as part of the station staff or maintenance crews. You could then apply for trainee driver posts as they become available. Train companies often recruit from their own workforce.
You normally have to be at least 21 to work as a train driver on the national rail network. If you are aged between 18 and 21, you may be able to train and work in yards and depots away from passenger lines. To work on the London Underground you must be at least 18.
If your initial application is successful, you will be invited to an assessment centre for tests and an interview. Tests could cover:
basic mechanical knowledge
ability to remember information
reaction times
concentration skills
group exercises.
You will also have to pass medical checks, which will test your fitness levels, eyesight, colour vision and hearing. Companies also screen for drugs and alcohol.

I just wondered if you worked in that game as obviously ccu does.

Must admit I saw adverts for trainee drivers for the u bahn in Munich and was surprised at the entry requirements, thought they were quite low.

If only this lad was so upset about John Nixon as he is about Tube drivers i reckon we'd have new owners by now.

It is pur envy, the nutjob is just jealous because somebody is getting good money for doing a job he thinks is not worth that wage.

How he decides what pay a job is worth, I have no idea because he seems completely unable to think for himself, relying on recycling the Daily Mail.

Should run a book on which job he's gonna pick on next.

He thinks cut and pasting a generic Google search of 'How to be a Train Driver' shows all you need. That is the very basics that the learning would entail...

A lot of jealous people on here by the sounds of things, very few have a clue about train driving and the entry requirements etc,
Or the 1am starts and drink and drug testing, I suggest you apply for a job and then see how easy it is, that is if you pass all the tests and medical requirements before you start, also many sound green with envy that our unions have stayed strong and kept good working conditions when most other industries have bowed under the first sign of strike action.

Thought there were only one person being like that myself!

With the Underground drivers it is the unsocial hours, shift working and stresses of the job which make it deserving of higher pay. Remember the salary has to pay for somewhere to live in London by the very nature of the job.
