What do folk make of the team?
I’d have Bairstow at 4 and Foakes in at 7 as Keeper, no room for Denly.
Burns is in the last chance saloon.
Ali? Leach should be ahead of him.

Boycott slaughtered Ali on radio before. Lasso was quoting Ali saying he hadn’t scored any runs coz he never knows what number he’s batting. Boycs said absolute codswallop.

And Boycott is right. Ali's technique would get found anywhere between 1 and 11, so no point making excuses for him.

Agree. You could bat 5 and still be at the crease by 11.15. Boycs said play the shots you should play and leave the ones you should leave regardless of what number you come in.

Archer has a slight side strain - not great for a bowler and since Anderson is just recovering from injury I think it is sensible not to play both. With two mediocre ( to put it mildly ) batting line ups I think it will be a low scoring series. IMO their bowling attack is slightly better than ours so, despite what the bookies say, I think they are slight favourites. Hope I'm wrong.

On current form the Aussies' batting and bowling is in better form than ours.
You feel there's more chance of our batting collapsing than theirs and more chance of our bowlers bowling the wrong lengths or wasting favourable conditions than theirs.
Our first innings batting and bowling against Ireland was very poor and the batting in the second innings wasn't much better.
Root has moved up the order to try and bolster it but his World Cup Final innings and performances against Ireland highlighted that he is far from reliable when the pressure is really on.
Need someone like Burns or Denly to exceed the very low expectations of them. If we are batting first this morning it'll be tough to watch.
Moeen is the best spinner we have and that's why he's in. It's a pity he's out of form with the bat but if we had a proper batting line up his contribution should only ever be a bonus, not something to rely on.

All last week today was forecast to be badly affected by rain, but this morning's BBC weather gives a 0% chance of rain in Birmingham.
I'd like to think we'd at least bat into the final session but if I had to bet my money would be on 150 all out mid afternoon.

I'm afraid we will see how bog standard Ali is today when Lyon gets to bowl,the gamble on Anderson's fitness has backfired massively and this game would quite possibly be over by now had he not broke down instead looking down the barrel,

Yes the Anderson situation has been very costly. Probably down to the player ultimately to declare himself fit or not, but either way it doesn't seem that his fitness was properly tested beforehand for him to break down after 4 overs.

They really need Archer to be fit but must make sure he is first. If Archer isn't fit it will be Sam Curran to replace Anderson.
Leach has to come in for Moeen.

I think there's been quite muddled thinking for some years regarding the various 'all rounders' in the team. Stokes, bairstow, butler, moeen. A test side should be 6 batsmen, a decent keeper who can bat and then 4 bowlers - ideally 1 spinner and 3 steamers. In a perfect world your number 8 can hold a bat and at least one of the top six can send down a few overs but that shouldn't be their reason for selection. Stokes has worked incredibly hard at his game and is totally in on merit as one of England's best red ball batsmen but is the same really true of bairstow and butler? Are they better keepers than foakes? Is moeen England's best spinner? If the answer to any of those questions is no then they shouldn't be getting in the team. Of course the added problem is that there isn't a queue of players knocking at the door, a situation not helped by moving the first class games in favour of 20 over biffing. It also doesn't help that Root is a shit captain. Saying all that I think England are a vastly better side if they can bat first. Win the toss at Lords, put on 300,and I think it will all look a lot more positive.

I'm not happy with make up of team however we lost toss and Jimmy got injured I'm adamant that if he hadn't broke down we would have won that game however he did and we lost badly

Denley has looked good before getting out I would be tempted to swap them if they are staying in team Roy coming in lower down order
Momentum definitely swung with Headingley next up currently the quickest pitch in England .Jofra has them rattled what amazes me is how accurate and economical he is, so often speed merchants leak runs this lad doesn't

A tall order but with Root and Stokes batting there is always a chance.
