Nature quiz.

New bird for me. I had to ask a local with a lot more knowledge than me.
See if anyone on here knows what it is. Saw this between Longlands Fell & Great Cockup in the Northern Fells in a boggy, reedy area.
Very distinctive call.

Looks a bit like a Stonechat to me mate.

Last seen one in Cornwall about five years back next to the coast.

Not one you see down here and first time I've seen one was this one.
Been seeing a few Jays recently as well out walking. Too difficult to photo but amazing to see those flashes of blue on their wings.
Used to see loads as a kid but not too many anymore around here.
More Magpies than ever though.

You get a few on the Pennines from time to time. You often first know ones about by it's song which is a very ready tweet then a noise that my dad used to say was like two stones being rubbed together.

Yes, that is absolutely right, Bumble. I only noticed it because of that clacking stone type noise.

One of those birds that somehow instantly cheer you up when you see one. It must be ten years since I've seen one though. They seem to like evergreen trees to flit around in.

Do bats hibernate? Seen one flying round a few days ago, at dusk, thought it would be late for them.
Thought it was late for the bloody wasps l newspapered yesterday though.

Today's dog ratch Ridge Walk Wood Brampton an abundance of grey squirrels several spieces of Tit a rattling Woodpecker a massive Bull and a Stoat.

I think it depends a bit on how cold the autumn is but I think it's usually end of October or beginning of November before bats hibernate. When I was a kid I remember seeing them a few times on bonfire night.

A walk from Martindale to Bannerdale today we spotted several large herds of Red Deer some over 30 strong.
Sadly stealth isn't a strong point although we did get within 50 metres of this herd nearly as difficult to get a good shot of deer as it is our youngest grandson.

Stags seem rather quiet atm maybe they are feeling the love :-D

Out and about on the fells and across the fields in Cumbria saw some lovely birds.
Sadly, I wasn't quick enough to snap the Jay, Merlin, Dipper,Redwings, Owls and a few others I saw but managed to photo a Heron, Kestrel, Stonechat ( I think) Fieldfares and Woodpecker. Sat and watched the Woodpeckers and Jays for hours. Not sure if this is the Lesser or Greater Spotted one. Any ideas, anyone?
So many Fieldfares everywhere across the fields and heard the Tawny Owls a lot, even in the daytime.

I'm pretter sure it will be a greater spotted. Not always easy on a photo cos the biggest give away is the size. Lessers are small, not a lot bigger than a sparrow, and I've never seen one round here. Greaters are quite common nowadays, they are about the size of a blackbird but longer and thinner in sillouette. They are also cleaner to look at somehow, Lessers are sort of more speckly where greaters have cleaner lines to their markings.

Yes, it was a larger bird and actually I stopped and watched a group of 3 or 4 of them going about their business.
I found a spot close to where Tawny Owls, Woodpeckers and Jays all nest and it's easy for the hours to just roll by.
I was on the edge of the Chilterns at the weekend and there's no stopping the Red Kites. A stunning looking bird. They are even above the M25 now. I wonder in time if they'll become a problem?

Somewhere on the M40 round about Buckingham/ Wycombe area, there are loads of Red Kites. Used to pass them in the bus, on the way to the many London games, in the Conference.

We red kites regularly when we travel to/ thru Buckinghamshire ( must be around 20+ pairs along the motorway)

Bad half term week for walking but the consolation was more time to keep an eye on what was turning up on the bird feeders.
Bullfinch, greenfinch, long tailed tit, great tit and coal tit in amongst all the sparrows. Some beautiful collared doves as well.
Don't normally see long tailed tits on feeders - anyone else see them on theirs?
Lots of starlings about as well. Saw some decent sized murmurations above the fields at dusk.
Rooks making a right racket everywhere and still some field fares about mainly in amongst the starling flocks.
Heard the song thrush as well so spring must be on its way soon..

Fieldfares in amongst the starlings. Great sight was to see huge flocks of starlings, rooks and jackdaws on the flooded fields feasting on the worms coming up.

Yes! They just turned up one day en-masse and have been regular visitors for about 12months now, always in groups. Lovely to see.
