Nice day on the fells today

Is that from the back way Alan?

Been up twice before but both times from Wasdale Head way and up the narrow path up the gully.

I suppose it's good to get up there before the summer queues!

From Seathwaite Wukkie round the back of Great End up to the Pike then down Corridor Route to Styhead.

I choose Seathwaite as it's the Easiest way to get there from Carlisle as Wasdale is a pain to get to and the busiest route.

Given choice it would be doing it from Whahouse Eskdale a stunning route by either Little Narrowcove or Cam Spout Crag (allow a full day)

I once took my wife up the Hardknott Pass on my birthday. She said that's not going to happen again any time soon.

Garn senile Wukkie lol....in June 2011 we walked the corridor route to be greeted by a hailstones whiteout ont top...then helped a woman ont way down get directed to Wasdale as she was gonna end up in Borrowdale

Nice day on the fells Monday. From Mungrisedale over Bowscale Fell then onto Blencathra, just a steady day, no epics on Sharp Edge or owt like that.

Back up the Pike last weekend first bit of ice and snow to deal with :-)
Lingmell was mint too.

Probably the worst half term week for weather I've experienced in Cumbria for the 25-30 years I've been coming up.
Usually there's a good day here and there in a bad spell but with the wind, rain, hail, sleet, wind, rain, hail and sleet it was tough going out and about.
Such strong winds made it hard to get anywhere near the tops and paths, tracks and fields were sodden.
Still, managed to get out and about in the valleys in the Northern Lakes - Southerndale, Wythop, Dash and Barkbethdale - and onto the lower slopes and foothills of Skiddaw, Sale, Brae Fell, Dodd and Longlands.
Probably didn't get above 500 or 600 ft but still great to be out and about getting blown around with Rooks, Buzzards and Fieldfares for company.
Coming in sodden, frozen and windswept makes you appreciate the woodburner and Loweswater Gold all the more.
Despite the weather an hour or two on the hills can still make you feel like the luckiest man alive.

Is that a West Cumbrian euphemism?

I`m pleased I managed a few hillwalks in the brief weather windows between the turn of the year and the recent lockdown, looks like the hills will be out of bounds for some time, unless you`re fortunate enough to live in the Lake District and have a hill at the bottom of the garden.

A couple of days visit to Glen Shiel and mounting the Sisters, oh yes!!!





Back to the beautiful Lakes, and a walk over Robinson and Dale Head.



And possibly my last hillwalk for some time, last Saturday from Threlkeld over Clough Head and Great Dodd.


Gonna need a haircut soon, maybe some carrots and sugar lumps as well.

Will be interesting to see what impact the quarantine has on the busy footpaths in the Lakes-many will be getting a proper rest for the first time in a long long time

I did Barrow - Stile End - Outerside last Monday. First time I'd been out this year. Haven't a clue how to put pics up anymore now Tinypic has ceased to be.

So good to be back in the Cumbrian hills. What an inspiring and beautiful landscape.
First walk back on the fells and with long days of light to be had I thought I'd walk up Pillar from Ennerdale. I'd walked it from Wasdale but thought I'd make a real day of it.
Parked up at the head of Ennerdale water and then cycled 3 or 4 miles along the valley towards the Black Sail Youth Hostel through the evergreens. I'm not much of a cyclist but how enjoyable it was. I'm sure some on here know this track but it was my first time along it and what a joy it was. Highly recommended.
I had expected not to like Ennerdale with the plantations but I thought it was absolutely beautiful.
Stashing the bike in the woods the walk began up through the trees and out onto the fells. I took a route up Wind Gap between Pillar and Scot Fell and it was awful. A couple of hours up a non existent path through scree, boulders, rock and bog. One of the toughest ascents I've done.
From the photos you can see the route up to Pillar – the dip between Pillar on the left and Black Crags and Scoat Fell on the right.
When you finally get to the top of the gap a jaw dropping view down into Mosedale and Wasdale appears and the Scafells and Gable dominate a stunning view.
After the drudge up there's a really nice pull up onto Pillar itself with great views down into Ennerdale and across the Buttermere Fells.
Back along to Wind Gap and up onto Scoat Fell and then Steeple.
It was a wonderful place to be for a few hours. Really wonderful.
The descent back down into Ennerdale was long. Rocky and boggy and so hard on the knees.
A couple of miles back through the forest and then the cycle back to the car.
Took me 9 and a half hours in total and probably the most tiring walk I've done. I wouldn't walk up Pillar from Ennerdale again by this route but there's a nice looking ridge leading up to Steeple which looks a much better alternative than the way I took.
It's a wonderful place to be up on Pillar and I'd recommend it to anyone as I would a walk along the River Liza through the trees in Ennerdale.
Nothing quite like a pint of ale in the evening remembering a long day in the hills.
