That time of year, where decision’s will start to be made soon etc…

Squad as it stands come Summer:

UNDER CONTRACT FOR 2023
GK - Breeze*, Simons*.

DEF - Senior, Armer, Whelan, Mellish.

MID - Guy, Dixon.

WIDE - Gibson, Patrick, Bell.

STR - Dennis, Sho-Silva, Abrahams, Fishburn*.

(*Indicates 1st Year Pro)

OUT OF CONTRACT IN SUMMER
GK - Howard, Norman.

DEF - Mellor, Feeney*, McDonald.

MID - Riley, Devine, Devitt, Charters.

WIDE - Dickenson, Toure.

STR - Alessandra, Mampala.

(*Indicates Club Option available)

LOANEES BACK TO PARENT CLUB
GK - Jensen.

DEF - Roberts, Simeu.

STR - Omotoye, Windsor.

Thoughts folks?

I’d be offering deals to Howard (Though could see him saying no?), Riley, Charters and Devitt. Also using Feeney’s option (Or better longer term deal!)

I’d look to move Abrahams on of those signed up too.

The rest of those out of contract just haven’t performed consistently enough…

Howard
feeney
riley
devitt

Will all stay imo, i think Mcdonald will turn down a offer from us.

What do we think about Devine? Personally, I think he's a solid squad player who can fill in at times of need, maybe worth another year if he is happy being a squad player.

Very similar in terms of positions can cover, and with Whelan under Contract, prob gets the nod?

Both are Squad Player’s not starting XI IMO…

Think you've got that spot on, although would like to see how Simeu keeps progressing as there is clearly a player in there and could be worth a loan next year (although feel he will be loaned higher )

Feeney has an option in his contract that the club can trigger, presumably for an extra year after this.

It would be nice to tie him down longer but at worst we’ll trigger the option.
More importantly, how is any of this going to get sorted out without David Holdsworth? :D

Will all depend on whether we survive in this league, who the manager is and possibly the owners.

Josh Dixon is also contracted for next season. Signed a new 2 year deal last summer.

I don't expect there to be too much thought about this at the moment, focus will be on keeping the morale of the present group together and focusing on the job in hand.

Starting binning players off at this stage could undermine the mood. I'd be telling them they've all got a chance of a new contract if they keep this run going.

Cheers Crunch, updated Feeney and Dixon…
I'd say get rid of as many as possible, there's a weak mentality in the dressing room which sees the side regularly capitulate and drain confidence, 18 months of being one of the worst teams in the division. Theres a few probably worth keeping and some promising youngsters , but liklihood is that theres better players out there available who wouldn't put our football league status at risk.

All depends on who the manager is.

If it’s Simmo I’d keep Riley, Feeney and Devitt and move the rest on.

Transfer list Abraham’s and Silva (yes he scored 2 in 5 but I think you need better to move up the leauges.

Personally I’d keep charters don’t think we will.

Howard’s looked good recently, but been prone to a few mistakes think we’ll look at what’s out their.

Worth noting Jack Ellis has a contract too

The worry is the recent uptick in points is bringing in complacency at all levels. We were much the poorer side in both games but fought to get the points.

Worse still, the custodians will be thinking it’s their wise decisions!

We need a clear out. Offer contracts to Feeney and Riley.

Charters has not made the progress and part of this was not getting enough real game time. This might be more on the club than on Charters.

If Bell and Dixon next year are not ready they need loaned out straight away.

Same for Abrahams or cancel contract and let go.

Our team is inconsistent, fragile and is mentally not strong enough for the division.

I enjoyed the game last night but putting emotions aside Rochdale were the better footballing side even in midfield.

If we get decent offers I think we will let go Guy or Mellish to balance the books. It will be the same as we did in selling Hayden and Tanner as last year.

There were several players I would look at just from Rochdale and probably in the affordability bracket. I liked how they played last night in terms of shape, movement, passing and playing through the thirds. They could have been easily out of sight last night.

We need a blending of experience and youth with a strong mindset. I like the character of a Feeney and we need more in the team. I would like to see his contract extended with possibility of a future captain.

As for structure a DOF has not worked at this level. I agree that it is needed in the higher divisions. If Simmo does not stick around I would prefer a Head coach with a strong number two. Danny Grainger would be good no 2. Sadly I think Gav Skelton needs to leave.

It all depends on if we stay up.
Feeney - activate option
Howard -1 yr deal as a no.2
Riley- will he stay? Did he fall out with Millen? I’d keep him.
Simmo- director of football
Danny Grainger-head coach with Skelton.

At this level, do we need 3 coaches and can we afford it.

Simmo is a hands on coach, not an office type. Simmo and Grainger would be perfect combination. Grainger has coached only at Workington and an assistant at Falkirk.

Rochdale might have put in an attractive performance but they’ve only mustered 4 more points than us. And they lost 2-0.

Mark Howard has been the difference in matches this season. Other teams can play their fancy passing game but if their keepers make mistakes and Howard stands firm we collect the points.

It's very difficult to judge Charters when he's only started three league games.

I find it very hard to believe he would have been worse than Jon Mellish in a lot of the games over the last year or so.

Yet you’re coming to that conclusion yourself based on a few performances?

He’s been training with the first team for nearly 3 years now, if he was good enough he’d play. 3 managers have seen him every week in training and decided he’s not good enough to play consistently.

Isn’t guaranteed a start 2 levels below at Gateshead. Worth offering a deal if we’re relegated but I’d release if not.

I actually thought at the start of season we were stronger than last season & would push for promotion ( then we lost tanner & hayden) but I had big concerns with us letting a hugely experienced keeper in Farman go and banking on a young unproven keeper with fitness concerns.
Thankfully Howard materialised. I’d keep him next season & try get someone equally experienced.
Similar with the need for a couple of experienced defenders.

2 years: Feeney

1 year: Howard, Norman, Mellor, McDonald, Riley, Devine and Devitt

6 months: Charters

Released: Dickenson, Toure, Alessandra and Mampala

Season-long loan: Simeu

I know some of the names might be surprising, I just think the backline especially still needs a couple of experienced heads like Mellor and McDonald (3 and 2 league promotions respectively), if the bodies are still willing. Certainly not past it in age, Mellor’s about 8 months younger than Dennis for example and McDonald’s more than 2 years younger than KD.
