That time of year, where decision’s will start to be made soon etc…

Squad as it stands come Summer:

UNDER CONTRACT FOR 2023
GK - Breeze*, Simons*.

DEF - Senior, Armer, Whelan, Mellish.

MID - Guy, Dixon.

WIDE - Gibson, Patrick, Bell.

STR - Dennis, Sho-Silva, Abrahams, Fishburn*.

(*Indicates 1st Year Pro)

OUT OF CONTRACT IN SUMMER
GK - Howard, Norman.

DEF - Mellor, Feeney*, McDonald.

MID - Riley, Devine, Devitt, Charters.

WIDE - Dickenson, Toure.

STR - Alessandra, Mampala.

(*Indicates Club Option available)

LOANEES BACK TO PARENT CLUB
GK - Jensen.

DEF - Roberts, Simeu.

STR - Omotoye, Windsor.

Thoughts folks?

I’d be offering deals to Howard (Though could see him saying no?), Riley, Charters and Devitt. Also using Feeney’s option (Or better longer term deal!)

I’d look to move Abrahams on of those signed up too.

The rest of those out of contract just haven’t performed consistently enough…

(Updated Feeney & Dixon)

Hearing strong rumours on simmo really liking Jack Diamond, be a great signing but can’t see it, i’d say league 1 be looking at him if sunderland go up. Although i could imagine Simmo really selling the club

Diamond would be a fantastic signing but we’d only stand a chance should Sunderland fail to get promoted I’d imagine.

Even then you’d think there’d be plenty of better offers from L1 and L2.

I actually think we have more chance if they go up , as if they stay in league 1 he'll get a chance . If they go up they will probably let him go, as will look for a high calibre of player.

I agree, that’s actually what I meant! It has been a long week..

Can't see Jack diamond being a goer.

Long deal at Sunderland, league 1 quality player now.

Even if he came back to l2 he wouldn't come to us. He supposedly really enjoyed it at Harrogate, so there, or he would go somewhere like Bradford where they could pay a much higher % of is wages.

I wonder if we might take a chance on Izzy Brown. Hugely above our standard previously, but released from Preston after a season out with an acl injury. Worked with Bridges

I think football and the lower leagues need to re-evaluate players contacts. We see it now with footballers going into the community.

But clubs could add more value but diversifying the roles and responsibilities.

players attached to clubs and schools
players assisting the new commercial dept and business links.
players assisting with social media and marketing
players sprucing up the ground and environment.
players involved in fundraising and voluntary work
players helping out with the academy and youth programs.
players giving talks with training on drug awareness or community outreach programs.

If we need everyone pulling together then we need to maximise all resources of players on a day to day level.

I think the Newcastle Falcons do this part brilliantly.

Simpson's comments about a recruitment manager are concerning. My fear is that he is saying he doesn't know the division and he doesn't have contacts.

No Contacts?! Good grief!

He’s been Coaching for nearly 20yrs, been involved in the England set-up, as well as at Clubs across all Divisions - He’ll have a Contact list bigger than anyone since Greg Abbott!!!

Hm. If the contacts he has are so good you have to ask why he he's talked so much about getting a head of recruitment. It means he's looking at players he doesn't know and he doesn't have an opinion he trusts. Good grief!!

If he learned anything yesterday it must be that Feeney, mellish and whelan in centre defence is a disaster.

I really find it hard how you find this kind of thing difficult to understand . Connection are good and great at getting the deals done , but it's good to have you're own system in place to get the players look at .

Also it's doesn't mean he's doesn't know about the players he's looking , your making ridiculous assumptions which Is not unusual .

Paul Simpson has incredible connections , he talks about recruitment as it's a crucial part of any club .

I do struggle to understand sometimes. Connection are good, he's doesn't know about the players he's looking

It is are raining not here also.

Did you read Simpson's interview?

We’ll be looking at the National League, some of League One and League Two. I knew that I needed somebody who is experienced, and somebody who knows the leagues that we’ll be fishing in.
I wanted somebody here who knew that, and who knows how to tap into it

Though of course I'm sure the England set up is overflowing with players from the National League.

Jamie McGonigal looks useful at least at Irish league level.

I thought about Doohan as well, but mixed reviews on the Tranmere board. He lost his place at the end of the season. Wicken's (Fulham) agent is working overtime to get him a move. No idea what he's like.
Jamie McGonigle of Derry is very keen to try his luck in England.

I've also no idea what Jamie Devitt's plans are. As he can hardly walk, and he wants to come back for pre season I imagine he doesn't have any. But using senior, injured players to take training, do scouting missions is fairly common practice. Unlikely anyone in the L1 play offs is going to come here but there are other games taking place. Running a trialists' day? Just because he's injured doesn't mean lucozade and Jeremy Kyle all day, he's getting paid, and it's useful for him.

Its about £450 to do the online level 1 & 2 data analysis courses. I bet you'd get half a dozen people on here who would do that (self pay) if there was an expectation of then using it (unpaid) to help out the recruitment team. Other clubs do this, Bristol C have a team of 25, I think Swansea's is even 40 people. We have none. Get kids from the uni to do it, the FA give grants.

We were linked with Maher of Halifax at Christmas, he's available now.

Josh Rae, GK for QotS, seemingly rated, has turned down a new Contract offer.

Couple of Poster’s on the QotS Thread on Pie & Bovril suggest he may take the short drive down the A75 to us…

Biggest mistake in last summer’s appalling recruitment was entering new season with inexperienced keepers. Cant happen this year. We need an experienced no. 1.
Still don’t understand offering Norman. Made a lot of sense to retain Howard and give the 2 younger keepers half season on bench & half out on loan to see how they develop.
Ross Doohan was at tramere from Celtic this season. Interesting where he ends up as his contract is up. 24 years old. 14 clean sheets in 30 games.

Fits with the younger mold were looking at but 4 keepers inexperienced keepers would be unusual to take .

what DH actually did

That is a highly questionable subject...

Director of Football and Head of Recruitment are two completely different roles. Granted Holdsworth probably skipped between the two, but lets be honest didn't really do either.

I'd imagine the new guy will be in charge of recruiting a team of scouts in specific areas of the country to watch games and look out for players. He will then compile all the data and information and feed it back in for the Management Team. I would have thought Simmo will have his own targets then task the new guy to filter them out. There is an official App called WhyScout now that collects all the video analysis, data and stats on every game, most people in the game are registered with it. So its not beyond the realms of possibility that the Management Team will be using this and drawing up their own list of targets regardless of the new guy coming in.

Old ground, but we all know DH was the worst version possible of a DoF - I’m an advocate of the role, but he was the worst possible version.

The scope of a DoF role changes from Club to Club, but involvement in recruitment process is probably one of the main similarities. Our new ‘Head of Recruitment’ will likely be similar to what DH actually did from the stuff Simpson has said, though the financial side may be more dealt with now by NC.

Got to chuckle at the thought of Devitt being sent to Sheff Wed v Sunderland tonight mind! :p

The only reason there wasn't a recruitment policy in place when Simpson arrived is he insisted we sack Holdsworth as a condition of him accepting the role.

There clearly has been a recruitment policy for the last few years.

Simpson's much vaunted "head of recruitment" is just a Holdsworth replacement.

The things that jumped out of Simpson's interview for me was that he said people would be surprised, then he said that players offered would have 2 weeks to decide. Some out of contract players at least are going to get offered something. We may be surprised at which ones.

Holdsworth was brought in to cut the wage bill, and he did that. My disappointment with him was that was all he seemed to do. A Director of Football should have coaching badges and be helping out in training. When Beech/ Millen were manager they were off scouting matches mid-week, where was DH? If you look at Sutton Utd they've got guys doing ref badges reffing u16 games, lads doing coaching badges coming in practising tactics with the u18s, kids doing sport management degrees doing data analysis- all free. We should be doing this. Jamie Devitt comes over as a smart guy, under contract until 30/6, he should be out scouting what games there are. We are just so passive. No putting pressure on people to do more

Paul Simpson said when he came in if he took the Managers job permanently he was going to completely
overhaul the whole playing side of the club especially the fact there was no recruitment policy in place.

The average tenure of a League 2 Manager is about 18 month so the changes PS will make especially in player
recruitment will benefit the club for many years and Managers to come.

No it doesn’t.

It means he’s bringing in someone he trusts as a second opinion, who can go Scouting, and compile reports etc…
