Public procurement is a snail, a monster created by policy and procedure that has so much Union influence all over it, we used to throw all Council tenders in the bin.

No one was sitting around twiddling their thumbs, and finding someone just to read the 50 page pre-q document was out of the question. Which is why all Government and Local Council contacts have fallen into the hands of very large corporates, who take forever to get the job done, and now have the Councils by the short and curly's.

Then their is the private sector, that get's on with it, and during a pandemic that is what we needed to do. A time to throw away the procedure manual, and worry about it later.

There is nothing to say companies with Labour donors were not used in the procurement process - it just doesn't make as good a headline.
I've no problems with the government short circuiting the procurement process in order to obtain PPE as speed was obviously of the essence.
What I do have a problem with (and this is a general gripe) is why do governments/councils etc use 'consultants', when more often than not they have the necessary expertise in house. I can only assume that they can them blame the 'consultants' when things go tits up.

I think I err somewhere between Capitalism and Socialism and I can see benefits in both without going into extremes in either direction...and I think we as a country have the balance just about right.

Regardless of anyone's personal feelings towards Corbyn , from a Brexit position he was screwed either way. It was easy for Johnson ("get Brexit done" and Swanson ("get Brexit stopped" but the Labour support was split. Whichever way he went Corbyn was going to lose support. In the end, unfortunately, by not committing he lost both!
I know people who wouldn't vote Labour because he wouldn't back a second referendum and there were clearly others who changed their vote because they felt he was obstructing the process. In the end his approach was to try to fight the election on everything but Brexit and that failed as well.

Christ’s sake, Civil Servants are there to deliver Government policy and that’s what they do. I was a Home Office CS for 35 years and that’s what we all did. Ministers are always difficult but Private Office staff and Ministers generally reach a working arrangement quite quickly. A problem sometimes arises when a Minster demands that something be done that is clearly impossible because just asking for something doesn’t mean that it’s attainable. Most Ministers accept that there may be a solution that that will take more time or more resources than they expect, in other words Ministers need to have their expectations managed. Priti Patel was clearly not up for that, and went off on one. Several times in three different Government Departments. Once would have been accepted as her having a bad day. More is completely unacceptable. Sack the bitch.

Local authorities should have been more involved. They have managed to contact over 80% of cases they have been given where the National Tracing System failed to trace.. And they are only allowed to contact trace those who have tested positive. They are not allowed to trace those who have been in contact with positive cases as these have to be referred back to the National Tracing System.

The National Test and Trace system can't even contact all those in the same household, Which means they are trying to count those as positive tracings . One household even got 45 calls from the National Tracing System. I wonder if they can claim that each of those calls was a positive tracing.

I thought about saving up to add a little bit to mine a while ago but decided not to. It feels like pure speculation because the gold doesn't actually do anything by itself, you're just hoping someone else will eventually pay more for it. 22 companies plus four public ones to run a test and trace system. Far too many.. Imagine trying to keep an eye on that many. It looks like a case of complication for the sake of it, or jobs for the boys..

Local authorities should have been more involved. They have managed to contact over 80% of cases they have been given where the National Tracing System failed to trace.. And they are only allowed to contact trace those who have tested positive. They are not allowed to trace those who have been in contact with positive cases as these have to be referred back to the National Tracing System.

One of the weakest areas during lock down has been enforcement. This has been blatantly politicised by the likes of Brurnham, Khan, The Mackem Miner, and several other Labour run Councils " we're not going into tier x without the loot from the Government (taxpayers) dosh." what message did that send to local residents ? What chance of the militant left following the Governments rules ? The only one who played ball was the Mayor in Liverpool.

So, if Local authorities cannot help enforce lock-down, what chance had they with Track and Trace ?

I don't see how that is politicizing anything, they're just saying they need adequate financial support to help individuals and businesses whose income will be affected by the restrictions.

What a world we live in, where asking for enough money to prevent people being homeless and starving to death is seen as "politicizing". That's capitalism for you.
