Well, I could imagine everyone in the Government was going above and beyond at the time to try and manage a pandemic. This would be be extremely tiring, both physically and mentally.
A short reward for those efforts and a reinvigorating get together at work could only benefit us all.
It makes Hancock's none social distanced knee trembler look a bit feeble.

My Mrs also went above and beyond, along with her colleagues. They weren’t able to enjoy this kind of reward.
Instead they had folk clapping for them, which gave them absolutely nothing in terms of real reward. Clap for the NHS, but let your supreme overlords abuse their own rules and enjoy a good knees up?

Normally Labour supporters would do likewise, but what happened last time - they fell for all the lies and deceit that was/is Brexit.
The trouble is since then Boris seems to think the public will accept anything he says and does!
He may well cling on for a while yet mind, because no-one is going to be too keen to take on the countries present and upcoming travails and he does kind of make a reasonable comedic punch bag to take attention away from others in his party - oh and there is the issue of there being no viable opposition.
