Can't say I'd be overly bothered by this.

I rate him above Brisley and Ellis but at the same time it's glaringly obvious we need a change of personnel at the back, and with those 2 under contract and Raynes out of contract, it would free up some space in the squad.

Great stuff. :(

So we've Liddle, Grainger, Brisley and Ellis all signed up for next season. You couldn't make a decent defender out of the lot of them.

Tom Miller is half decent and that's about it.

Unfortunately, there was just two many mistakes in Raynes, despite his obvious effort. He has improved with us, but if we want to challenge next year he's not the type of defender we need. Hopefully Curle and Dykes are sweet talking our new centre half as we speak.

What about the others? Did you see that first goal at Exeter - Grainger fell over and Liddle passed it to their centre forward. There's a catalogue of errors with those pair and they're gan to be the mainstay of the defence next season!

The third home goal against Exeter, Miller got skinned again and Raynes turned slower than an elephant. They're all bad defenders, Wouldn't be bothered if any of them went.

I liked Raynes, he tried his heart out but there's not one defender we can be too upset about leaving this season. If any of them went.

I suspect KC knew full well that Raynes & Jabo were leaving so here's hoping he can do the work required to improve the areas that cost us promotion.

Who know's with the right players brought in around them Miller, Brisley or Ellis could be great next season. I suspect it will take a few players to come in & not all of those listed will play. I'm half expecting Ellis & Brisley still to go tbh.

With us losing a couple of players, how long before people start kicking off about no signings...?

I agree Liddle not up to it either, nor Gillesphey, and probably not Brisley either, the only one I actually rate in the centre of defence is Ellis.

There's no denying Brisley was poor this season and if a club did come in for him then allowing him to move on would probably be in the best interests of both parties. I'd say that will be unlikely though as he's on a big wage apparently. If we're going to persist with one of the CBs then he's the one to persist with as a squad player as he did play a fair few games for Peterborough at a higher level so must have something about him. We haven't seen that yet and maybe he really is just not good enough, but I'd be more inclined to let him have another chance than any of the other defenders. The others have been here long enough to show they aren't up to it.

Brisley had a disrupted start, picked up a knock in pre-season so was probably behind the others to begin. When he came into the team in Oct/Nov, we were on a good run and he wasn't too bad. Suffered like the rest of the team when we were on our poor run from the new year then seemed to slip down the order.

With a full pre-season and possible new partner beside him, we might see a better version?

A good central defensive partnership is hard to come by but, as likeable as raynes is, he isn't the answer if we are pushing for the top. Too slow and too many individual errors. Brisley has been terrible. A real let down. I expected so much more from him.
Liddle the same. Too casual and cost us a lot of points and goals. Maybe better in his preferred position. Time will tell.
Grainger is slow but has other qualities to merit a place. Miller is slow and overrated. Half decent back up but not a first teamer.

When Curle brought Raynes in, we needed players in and around the squad who were experienced in this division and who would add fight to the team, something which we were totally void of under Kavanagh. I've criticised Curle but one thing he has brought to the team is a resilience which no doubt has been helped by the likes of Ibehre and Raynes. Ultimately Raynes is not up to standard in a team that has promotion ambitions, but he did always seem to give his all when called open. That said, commitment only takes you so far and lower League Two is his level - for all the passion he shows, you're just waiting for him to make a mistake when the ball goes near him. Curle HAS to use this as an opportunity to get a quality CB in to replace him. I'm glad he's got himself another contract closer to his family and wish him well at Crewe.

Thought that was a joke newspaper report at first.

I can see why Liverpool would have wanted to have a look at him but he is now as he probably was then, a lower league version of Spencer Prior - not a bad thing in some ways but sometimes you need more.

He was at the heart of quite frankly a shambolic defense .We really need an organiser who can read the game a bit better than the players we have and at least one full back with a bit of pace

i dont think it will be hard to pull our defense apart and rebuild something better we are conceding 15-20 goals to many in recent years

With the budget we have the defence should be better, I know we are fourth tier but the leaking of goals must frustrate Keith more than us.

Keith has identified this to the extent of Raynes gone, he doesn't rate either Ellis or Brisley who are on the transfer list and we are basically left with Raynes, Miller and Liddle (lol).

Not a pop at Liddle but Keith seems adamant at playing him at the back.

So we will basically have no defenders left but if they aren't doing the job then we can't moan at Keith doing his job, he gave most a chance but they still repeatedly messed up.

Anybody remember a young Newport defender who played for them here , I remember thinking he looks usefull

...buggered if I can remember his name.

Edit : might have been Demetriou ....if so he's just resigned for them. Aged 27 !!!
