I got the impression that Simmo wanted to up the minutes of the proposed starting team as the friendlies got closer to kick off.
Plenty of games and no doubt injuries to contend with.
Devitt is a perfect player to have waiting in the wings,, assuming he is happy with that.

It's still a no-brainer to give him a contract and now he's proved his fitness doubly so, I don't understand the delay.
His versatility is key, for me. He can provide cover for either flank, play as a deeper lying midfielder, in the "ten" role, as a "false nine" or in a front three.
With an injury or suspension or two in central midfield he would, at the very least, provide excellent cover - and he obviously wants to play for us.

Maybe he wants to start games and it doesn't look like he will, hence the delay.
Ideally the club would want to give him a contract incentivised towards playing time, giving his injury history. Whereas Devitt would understandably want as much guaranteed basic as possible.
I’d imagine Simmo wants to sign him up, but they’ve used preseason to judge his fitness and to see where the balance should be.
Hopefully it all works out and he signs up for another season. A fit Devitt could easily make the difference between mid-table and play offs

He is a decent player, but the stats above by CCU aren't good. Very risky if he gets injured again.

That said what goes around... He rejected (and rightfully so - more money, better prospects) our contract offer at the end of 2019, to move to Blackpool - Which, on hindsight, was a mistake, given the manager change and subsequent injuries, which have put him in the position he's in now.
Really hoping he stays, but if it's pay as you play, it's a gamble for him, given the injury history.

I suspect the club will be looking at wages divided by the number of expected minutes on the pitch in deciding whether Devitt, or any player provides value for money. By that criterion a payment by appearance model, or a low basic salary topped up by a more generous appearance bonus seems reasonable for a player who has had long term injury problems.
That said, I accept that any player could suffer a long term injury in any game.

He’s definitely not the greedy type, based on when he last left us. All he wanted was a 2 year deal, same wage. We were only dishing out one year deals and he/she had just had a baby. That is why he left, looking for some security- not in pursuit of more money.
I seem to be in the minority that isn't fussed about whether Devitt signs or not. All this talk of him making a massive difference would've been correct 3 or 4 years ago when he left but prior to his spell at Morecambe before joining us and since leaving us for Blackpool, he has had a pretty average L2 career. I'm sure he's a good character and if we sign him on the deal Simpson has offered then it makes sense but I really don't see him being the difference between mid-table and the play-offs. In the games he played last season he looked neat and tidy but in a poor team.
I think he adds a lot of what we were missing last season & what is required for a top 10 finish. Set piece delivery, assists, goals & experience.

Hopefully Hilton will hit the ground running but that’s expecting a lot from a young player in his first season. Devitt s experience will help us hit the ground running.
