If you know your position you don't have to run as far, you've got to make the ball do the work.

Mellish runs further than anyone else because he's chasing the ball like a Cocker spaniel and chasing the opposition like a schoolboy.

His effort is not in question, it's his technical ability and intelligence as a midfielder which are both lacking. Yes he made a great run yesterday before Toure bounced the ball off his head into the goal, but in general his performances this season have been garbage of the highest order.

Look I'm pleased for Mellish and I thought it was his best game in a Carlisle shirt at the weekend.

He's got age on his side to develop and improve in that midfield role and I suppose the year extension gives him that extra security and confidence.

I really hope he makes that box to box position his own, he has to prove a lot of supporters (myself included) wrong!

My point was that after that game people started to realise that he wasn't actually that bad either, he just needed a bit of confidence and to start believing in himself. But typically some fans simply want to have a go at anybody that they think will never make it, like the insane ramblings of Piglet, he's already announced to the world that Mellish will NEVER make it in midfield and that our manager is a Simpleton, without giving either of them a real chance.

I rated Conway quite highly, even before those idiots in the Paddock booed him that time.

He wasn't the fastest player in the world and didn't run a million miles in a game like a headless chicken kicking everything above a blade of grass, but he had decent technique, could pick a pass, had an eye for goal and also had the intelligence required to be a success in midfield. I'd probably have him in my team of the 90's.

The analogy with Mellish is a million miles off. It's like comparing a chihuahua with a racehorse (in terms of midfielders).

I did actually think Mellish had decent potential as a central defender, that quality of bringing the ball out of defence had a bit of Alan Hansen about it. Playing him out of position is going to screw his career to be honest. Beech will keep on hammering that square peg into the round hole for two years (or however long) until he's too old to develop properly as a defender. He'll end in 2022 back in non-league in the North East struggling to patch his career back together.

Have you ever played in midfield or football at all. Sometimes the ball does the work, sometimes you have to make it work. He often chases lost causes and tackling high up the pitch to gain us territory. His work will often no be noticed. If devitt really wanted to be here he wouldn’t be asking for crazy money, please give up your agenda your very boring.

You can't really compare him to a Billy, a Thirlwell or even a Prokas at our level. Those ball-winning, gap filing, defensive type qualities are an asset holding in midfield, but not really what you want specifically in an attacking midfielder.

Just as it was too early to call him out after 2 games we should not get over excited too soon... but a few more games with his energy and play and he will have proven himself as a real find.

Joking aside about the B Robson comparison, I think newcarlislefan has proven himself to be a very shrewd judge in his analysis. It seems the game is changing from some of the tedious fannying on we have seen over recent times, to a more substance over style approach and I think most of us will be earing humble pie about Mellish. Well done that man.

I think it's fantastic he's returned three goals in as many games, but there have been worrying periods also in those games where he's been chasing shadows and has looked out of his depth.

Can you forgive general ineptitude from a midfielder if he's bagging you a goal every game? The answer to this is probably "yes". However, if you're the rest of the division analysing our performance then you stick a man on Mellish to prevent him from having any space in the box and he's completely nullified.

There's the energy, the "tackling" and a bag load of pointless running, but replaced by a more intelligent midfielder we'd look like a better football team and less fluster and bluster.

I'd like to see a midfield three of Furman, Guy & Riley. Yes we might lose Mellish's goal, but we might gain some more watchable football and more goals from our front three.

Who was making blocks in the 80+ minute yesterday? Mellish. Who caused chaos in their defensive line for Alessandras cross to go in? Mellish Who scored a first time finish with his weaker foot to score 5 in 3 games? Mellish. Who bullied Harry Pell one of the most effective midfielders in the league and almost got him sent off? Mellish

He’ll have good days and bad days but if you can’t appreciate when he doesn’t score you don’t deserve him when he does. Nobody agrees with you on this so leave your agenda and concertante on the fact they beat us 3-0 home and away last season, look where we are now. How many bottlers, mercenaries and overpaid nobody’s have we had in recent years? For once we’ve got an honest hard working lad from the north east whose desperate to do well for the football club. He’s not devitt or Joyce or Kennedy, he Jon Mellish and he’s going places.

Apart from all his hard work Jon Mellish has something very few footballers have at this level,

Mellish isn't the only midfielder in the team, but he is the only one who has scored 11 goals or anywhere like it.
In fact I can't see anyone else scoring 11 goals in the whole of the season.

Maybe if we replaced Mellish with a player who could pass the ball with a bit of intelligence we'd look better both in midfield and upfront.
