I get the feeling from interviews that Charters really struggled with Covid which explains why he’s not featured that much. The team will be built around him in the future but he’s only 19. Guy has surprised me in the deep lying role this season and I wouldn’t move him from there. 4-4-2 in a diamond relies on very attacking full backs which we don’t have and then we lose our wingers which have been quite affective recently. Cambridge had Knoyle and Iredale when playing a diamond who are much more athletic than Tanner and Armer who are better on the ball.

I thought Bell was the one who struggled with Covid? And, for that matter, I thought the excuse for our shocking form was the whole squad struggled as "nobody had it worse" than we did?

My 4-4-2 wouldn't be a diamond, and I do think Armer and Tanner do have the attributes to overlap quite effectively.

I don't reckon Guy's been a disaster in his holding role this season either although I do believe we're not utilising him as effectively in that role as we could do and are not playing to his strengths. I'd probably prefer to see him play with more licence to get forward, and having Furman alongside him in a four, or pushing him forward with Furman holding in a three would allow him to impact the game in possession to a greater degree.

If you wish to lie about that meeting with JC, I can't stop you. But for the record - I arranged the meeting. I succeeded in getting JC to apologise and shake hands with the fan he abused at Yeovil (which was the whole point of asking for the meeting in the first place). JC was less receptive to me, at that time, and made great theatre of showing me the door. I was calm and civilised for the entire time, as I'm sure Fozzy and the other witness will confirm.

I’m not one to get into non football arguments but you do give as good as you get and you have made some particularly nasty comments towards members on this form. However your ploy to get bites is sadly succeeding. Mellish will be a cult hero at Carlisle United whether you like it or not, how I want to see us represented on the pitch clearly differs from yours. However football disagreements do not need to turn into a slanging match.

Mellish has been 'discussed to death' on plenty of threads over the last few months, my opinion is: I'll say it again in case you can't read "he's a vital cog in our team" end of discussion, you wont agree (fair enough its a free country) but try not to involve me in your pathetic "I know I'm right and everybody else is quite simply a simpleton if they don't agree with me" discussions.

Your as much as a bully towards others as others are to you so don’t try playing the victim card. If you are feeling bullied either highlight it to the mods or leave if someone disagreeing with your opinion upsets you. I think people get too hung up on having to put a label on Jon Mellish. He’s got to be either a world beater or absolutely useless there doesn’t seem any happy medium. A bit of a marmite player.

I don’t think he’s ever going to be a top player and he has his limitations but you can’t say he isn’t pretty effective at league two level. He’ll have good and bad games like most players but he certainly does a job and we’ve had a lot lot worse play regularly.

I’d have him over the likes of James Berrett and Paul Thirlwell any day and how many games did they play.

Thirlwell was excellent in the role he played for us, almost all at tier three level also.

Firstly the idea that you can put a quantifiable value on one player's worth over a season is laughable. Nobody has any idea what would have happened without Mellish.

I still can't make my mind up about him. A lot of the time he really doesn't look like a footballer but you cannot argue with 13* goals from a midfielder. As has been said we've had many strikers who would be pleased with that. Comparisons with Ian Harte are ridiculous though. Hart's great season with us was just one in a glittering career that included a World Cup and a Champions league semi. It's quite possible that this will prove to be Mellish's moment in the sun and when he's playing for Workington in 5 years time he'll be boring his mates in the pub with "did I tell you about that time I got the record goals in a season for a Carlisle midfielder?!"

Still even if his only real quality is popping up in the box and he doesn't lose that knack he'll have a decent lower league career.

The technical side of his game can be worked on , don't think anyone would say he's a talented technical player, far from it .

He's got one thing which can't be coached , he's knows where the ball will land , he's shown this not just when scoring goals but when defending .

We have to count goals in the CCU Trophy as they're classed as first team games.

Whether you have an ethical objection to the competition is irrelevant.

The EFL won’t admit it but the Papa Johns isn’t a recognised first team competition. The Premier League sides wouldn’t agree that a sending off could be possibly carried into a competitive game (however unlikely that is given the teams they put out) resulting in the separate disciplinary system.

Any inclusion of reserve teams makes it impossible to be regarded as a proper competition anyway in my eyes.

You’ve went too far now with your crazy talk. If pointing and passing the ball sideways makes you a good player then Thirls was one of the best. His ‘unseen work’ in the middle of the park was unseen because it never happened.

He played half decent for a season and then stole a living playing about 1 in 2 the rest of the time if he was lucky.

I’m not really sure comparing Thirlwell and Mellish is realistic. The closest playing style to Mellish was Jason Kennedy of recent, both goalscoring midfielders. JK had a fair bit more finesse to his play, who can forget his overhead kick away at Morecambe. Mellish has the physical attributes to be very good at this level, passing and a first touch is something which can be improved over time and I think in recent games it has shown improvement. He just needs to keep it simple. As for Thirlwell, the best analogy for him is picking up a plain ham sandwich, ready salted crisps and a bottle of water in a meal deal. Yes a necessary choice if you don’t like Mayo but you always feel it’s lacking something and that’s what our midfield was at the time. It was fine having Thrilwell but you had to have athletes around him which we did not, Berrett was a decent player a few years before but he lacked pace and let’s face it the options to pass to we’re dreadful, Noble was fine, tenacious but not one to grab the game by the scruff of its neck. As for captaincy, should’ve been O’Hanlon for me, a proper warrior.

As midfielders who are under rated, hated, slagged off but were ever presents just about, in a successful team....I give you Penrith's finest, Richard Prokas. Did what he was asked to do, an almost ever present in one of my favourite blues teams. Wadsworth clearly rated him, yet many have nothing good to say about him?
