He has a young family to think about, why would you stay in a job where you can only be guaranteed 1 year when other clubs are offering 2/3?

If my company told me I was on a one year contract I'd tell them to f off. Football or not this is someone's livelihood, he might earn more than the average bloke his age but it's a short career and he will need another full time job afterwards. Has to act in his own best interest and I certainly feel no animosity towards Devitt for leaving.

1 year deals to all players? Is this a joke? This will not work. Why would any player come here on a 1 year deal if they have longer contract offers elsewhere? Carlisle is a long way from 95% of all players we must try and sign, even most of the current squad commute from Manchester etc. Why would anyone want to come here on a 1 year deal if they have other offers? We will sign players of course, but not of the required quality on this basis.

Every year we will have to build a new squad, if any of the signings do well they'll be off next year for FREE. I'm not trying to be 'bleak' but I just don't see the direction of the club anymore.

It's a shambles. The fact that the club have come out and released an interview stating only a 1 year deal was offered however makes me think it might actually not be their doing.. who's pulling the strings here?

I heard this today that SP going to resign due to the devitt debacle he wanted him on 2 yr deal interesting to hear what DH and the rest say about devitts interview not sure i believe this but you never know its CUFC

They are so out of touch they probably thought it was a positive that it wasn't about the money!

Agree with Urban Designer, Mike Jones is 32 in August, I doubt he had many offers thrown at him from other clubs.

This Devitt and 1 year deals crack is getting boring now. At some time in our lives we all have to move on sometime or other.

The way i see it is that the club, under EWM rule, are protecting the club finances.....or lack off. It's ok to dish out 2 and 3 year deals to attract players, but what about key players who suffer long term injuries. Jason Kennedy is a good example of this. Didn't Kennedy sign a new 2 year deal before he started having problems with his hip? I remember he got injured in the home game v Barnet (Wykes last game) and did not make another appearance until Exeter away play-off game. Another 18 months before making a brief sub appearance v Morecambe away. I'm sure, to the club, his wages was a waste of money.

Also, if Pressley criteria for players remains true then players incoming will be fitter and less long term injuries occur. These 1 year contracts are open to a review right? Which will role into another year if the players stay free of long term injuries. If any players do get injured long term then the club will release them after their contract is completed with little loss in finance to the club.

I think Devitt chose security over heart if that's the crack he is spouting about why he is leaving. I personally think he will struggle to settle at another club, like he did during his 1st season with Carlisle. Saying that, i hope he signs for a club not in league 2.

Devitt got sent off on his debut, missed the next 3 games. The team then went on that run where they didn’t lose a game for god knows how long and by January had only lost 1 game and were 3rd. The likes of Adams, Joyce, Jones, Kennedy were all playing well in a winning team. Devitt couldn’t get in the team at the start of his cufc career, that was it.

Obviously. I think any player that plays for us next season will be because of just that, they had no other offers.

So then we have to question, is EWMs involvement a good thing or a bad thing? For me there are few positives. If they had kept away, eventually the three squatters would have been forced out through lack of nous and funds and hopefully someone with drive and backing could have taken the club forward. Personally I would be very happy to be sat in the middle of League one, with a great youth policy, a steady manager working in a well run club. Oh and our best players on two or three year contracts. We can only dream.

I certainly seems that way. It all makes him look very weak. There wasn't a cat in hell's chance Devitt was going to sign, it was all for show as we don't want high(ish) earners when we can get some Scottish lads in who are happy to play for £500 per week.
