Anyone old enough to remember the original football manager that came out in about 82? The players were the England squad at the time and there was just the Premier (1st). No tactics, no transfers. It just used to show the goals

I think Forest Green signed 2 players today on 2 year deals one ex Morecambe... so a field somewhere near Cheltenham can afford more than a City the size of Carlisle... how low have we sunk under this shambles?

The first one I remember was Football Manager on the Spectrum ZX81-128Kbut there was Four Divisions with around 20 in. All the early games seemd not to include Carlisle for some reason. Perhaps they had an NDA out or summat.

I was hooked on The Double in the late 80's and usually play CM 03-04 now and again where I've taken Northwich Victoria from the bottom of the Conference to winning the Champions League five years running without spending a penny.

As for Holdwsworth, I see him as the new Abbott-type spouting his bullshit only from a senior management position rather than the touchline.

Yeah I had that one as well, green cover, think it only cost two or three quid - a bargain.

The best 8bit management game in my opinion is Tracksuit Manager - won The World Cup/European Cup with England on that one loads of times.

Wasn't hard with the squad you had on offer at the time.

Used to love the double as a kid. Luckily we were in division 3 so you could get us. Seem to remember Sunderland we’re also in div 3 and had the best team by far.

A lot of the players in the Fourth division were on less than £200 p.w. Maybe that's where Holdwsworth gets his figures from.

Strangely enough a pal of mine knows Kevin Toms, the creator of the original Football Manager and recently went out for a beer with him and I believe he asked him that question so I might be able to get an answer on that one.

Think he said he was a Torquay fan and he has just re-vamped Football Manager for portables and the likes.

My phone is an old thing, I insist on this as they are a hell of a lot smaller than those small monitors that people call phones these days so I unfortunately cannot currently play it.

There were only 20 teams in each league so they had to leave 4 teams out of Division 3 & 4.

That's a contracted player being punted on a week after saying none of our squad need to be sold and certainly not sold cheaply.

Holdsworth reminds me a bit of the club owner from that old comic strip 'Striker' in The Sun where Striker was made to sell his best players as the owner said there was loads of talent up and down the country playing on Muddy pitches on a Sunday to replace them with.

Even those Sunday League players would probably be better off keeping their jobs than accepting thar [censored] one year contract.

Its a tough read, basically the old board have ran out of money or stopped putting money in, EWM simply want a football club in the area, I do not think now that they are bothered about how good, they just want it to have league status.

DH has been brought in to balance the football side of the books, which he is doing. I think he is running the show, as he talks about players "I like him".
To be fair to him, he says we are better off and budget is there so he has done what was asked of him, so it is over to DH and SP now to get the players, though I think he aims that more at SP.

Why is it a tough read......because never ever in 2009 did I think Carlisle would be a shadow of its former self and the plus point being quoted everywhere is "look at Bury"...brilliant.

I thought DH has said in an interview that he was EWM's man and was there to control finances after the last couple of years of over spend?

I am just saying that DH and NC have said the budget is good this year, so I expect some signings, decent ones at that, DH seems to say in the interview that it is SP choice to rely on loans.

DH seems to be distancing himself from SPs policy of waiting to the last minute for better quality loans. If it works great if not we could be in shit street.

Fair enough having a policy of offering only one year contracts as it’s a gamble offering anything longer as you may have to pay up deals if things don’t work out, but we know Devitt, we know what he can do and our manager wanted to build the team around him. Surely we can deviate from policy once in a while if the opportunity suits the club.

Also I don’t understand why we weren’t in a financial position to offer two years but only one. Surely the second year is out of next year’s budget and wouldn’t affect this years?

The length of contract for our players is all about managing risk as Holdsworth explained in his interview. His worst nightmare is paying wages in a new season for injured or out of form players.

Yes but that's something which requires the club and the media working together, something which is very difficult when the BOD seem to take any and all criticism as a personal attack, and accuse the media of "negativity" for daring to ask difficult questions. Yet they handed a 2 year contract to a player who will miss the whole season with an ACL injury.

I think that was more of a show of good faith since they're probably only paying him youth wages. They must have seen a lot in him though.

The most recent being Arthur Gnahoa who lasted 20 minutes and Mark Cullen..

We have a history of signing or getting on loan players with injuries or prone to them.

Then people should be asking "Do you personally agree or disagree with SP's choices here?". So at a later date if he tries to wriggle out and shift the blame to Pressley, people can refer back to his earlier comments and say no, you also said you agreed with this so you are just as much to blame.

In this time of EWM austerity, how hard is for the manager to offer a potential player £600 a week or whatever, take it or leave it on a X year contract - job done! No need for Holdsworth whatsoever. With the quality of this squad, he has to take as much blame as Pressley.

Unfortunately the season so far just highlights how poor some of these U/23 teams are.
Some of these lads that are on the books of a Premier League and Championship clubs, you have to ask yourself why on earth that is the case, in some instances at least.

The plan was to rely very heavily on these young loanees to give us the quality needed in a more cost effective way.
Hardly fair on them, I suppose.
On a bad day at the office like yesterday, you think I would far rather watch a bunch of lower league plodders, as it was a soul destroying day.
We have had the occasional good un eg O'Hare but we do seem to have a habit of picking up the duffers , in the main.
