The Squad for 2019/20

Swindon players of the last few years must have been on decent money, as their contract offers and bids for players are looking very impressive.

They did get some players on good money off their books at the end of this season so that will obviously free up a bit.

I thought Swindon would be a good bet for automatic promotion last season. When they didn't get up the Chairman said he would cut the budget, he wouldn't finance another season the way he has been. Whether they have much more to spend than us I have no idea but I don't think we are competing with a team that is out of our league. Would be good to see the lad here, he played well last year, and he seems to have a good attitude. Lets see.

I would love it if for once our club were honest about its financial situation instead of doing daft offers and codswallop for good PR to make everything seem ok.

You normally don't get loan players until late on in the summer transfer window.
Parent clubs like to see how they perform in pre season games and training before making a decision on whether to loan them out or not.

This is what I was getting at yesterday Marko, we SHOULD be able to, but either we can not anymore or just wont.

Richie Wellens didn't bother to go in for him earlier as he thought Carlisle would offer a certain length and wage amount, which Swindon could beat, but the difference between the amounts he did not think Devitt would move down there for the sake of couple hundred quid. Now the contract offer is out there in the "football world" from Carlisle, the wages at Swindon in comparison are excellent, and the contract length more.

Fair play to Pressley, he has accepted a low salary and reduced budget but is happy to be here. It's not unreasonable for him to expect his players to accept the same terms - short contracts and modest wages. He wants players who want to prove themselves as he himself will be doing this season. It all ties in with his emphasis on wanting players who want to be at Carlisle. The financial benefits to the Club if this can work will be transformational.

Surely with the bigger earners - Liddle, Jones, Bennett, Kennedy etc - off the books the club can reduce its debt AND build a decent squad?
The two aren't mutually exclusive.
This current approach just becomes ideology and dogma after a while.
An approach of 1 year contracts across the board is just stupid.
The club can show ambition as well as being responsible with its debt.
Allowing Devitt to leave and not getting Yates is just plain stupid and so short sighted.
If you just cut, cut and cut you end up with nothing.

The more I'm hearing from David Holdsworth and about him the more I'm suspecting that he's living in a fantasy world where he has these delusions that players such as Devitt e.g. late 20s, proven at this level, with young family are going to just accept these short term contract offers.

Budgets/cuts may well restrict what we can pay them, but it has no bearing on how much faith we can show in a player by offering him a bit of security.

You're not going to get established/good players for this level offering 1 year deals, even with options, because other clubs will offer more security. Yes you may not want to move to the other end of the country, but if you've got security of a 2/3 year contract/income it'll make you think.

No I do not know, will know in time and could find out but as CCU says, you can see where abouts it will be with contract offers and signings.

To be fair to the club, they have always stated there would be a reduction again, so we all knew these offers/cuts were coming, it just gets on my nerves that this keeps happening and the club just sleep walks along.

Once this pre season is sorted and contracts are sorted, most of the lads are on a contract beneficial to Carlisle United, so what happens next, does PD step up? DH work is done? NC work is done?

And to be fair to DH, he got 2 keepers pre season last season on great deals for CUFC financially, I think the grumbles from Adam at the end of this season was that due to his form he thought he deserved more money this season, which is fair, BUT was under contract with the option, so I am not sure how they worked that one out between them but it has been done, maybe negotiated a rise i'm sure.

It’s not as simple as this, unfortunately. The additional ‘on’ costs of employment will account for 20/30%, including tax and insurance contributions. And, presumably, payments to agents, bonuses, and coaching staff wages come out of this pot too. £1k a week will be for the better paid if our budget is 1.1million

Saw something on twitter earlier that Swindon have now made a bid for Yates that betters ours (wouldn't be difficult).

Probably not much point in us getting into a bidding war with another football club.

Every other club will know we only offer 1 year deals.

Would we really pay a cash price for Yates - is he still under contract? - and then only offer a 1 year deal which wilkl mean we sell him for peanuts in January or watch him walk away next summer?

Don't forget to include the pre Knighton years. After my first season in 89-90 the football just got worse and i got very bored, rather than enthusiastic, quickly and I was drifting until Knightin stepped in.

Having to rebuild the squad every season is not the way to have a successful team, the club need to recognise players who are possible saleable assets and make sure they give them contracts that will make sure any club wanting them will have to pay a decent fee for them. The club are cutting off their nose to spite their face at the moment.

12 grand a month is a bargain if said striker can score 30 goals a season. 5 grand a goal compares with about £1 million or more a goal in the Premier League. There are probably only going to be about 5 strikers who could command £150k a year in League 2 and I don't expect we'll have one.

I'm struggling to think of more than a couple of 30 goal a season strikers in div 2 in the last decade....

12 grand a month is a bloody nightmare if said striker doesn't hit 30 a season. One sure fire way of sending a club to the wall, I really do despair with some people's quotes on here.

Zebby, yes you're right. I should have said 20 goals a season for £7,500 a goal. Everything in football is a gamble but having a top striker like John Marquis when Doncaster were in League 2 and paying him top wages is one of the best ways of getting value for money, relatively speaking.

I’d take one that can score one flipping goal at the minute.

I fully expect all of our out of contract players to turn down new contracts, which whether or not they’ll be missed, says a lot about our club and David Holdsworth’s ability to do the job he’s here to do.

Depends what his remit is. He’s maybe got a gold star from EWM for not offering Parkes a more favourable deal.

He did play for Bristol rovers for 4 years,started at Leicester ....add Yeovil & Orient too.
So no suprise he has ended up at Exeter

Mike Jones moving on as well I've heard.

Good solid 4th division defender, good attitude. I wouldn't have him in my team if I was going for promotion. I would have though with Exeter's budget they could afford better.
