Book in advance and its a lot cheaper but unfortunately my journeys are often at short notice.

I only found out about a year ago that is a virgin train is 30 mins late you get 1/2 your single fare back.

1 hour late and you get full single fare back.

2 hours late and you get full return back.

I get money back most times I go to Carlisle but could have claimed a load in the past when I didnt know.

On Virgin so long as you get a seat and it isn't a madhouse i.m quite happy to be 2 hours late getting back after all if they advertised a service that was free but took 2 hours longer than normal the bloody thing would be packed wouldn't it not so good on the way out but when i go down to London now i tend to go the day before in the afternoon and make a night of it or go on the last one then if its late they have to taxi you to where youre staying.

Scabby as some of the franchises are many problems lie in the rail infrastructure in my opinion.

So, to save few bob, get an off-peak to Lancaster, Lake District or Carlisle ticket (which is cheaper than a Peak to Preston)

Get off at Preston for a coffee, and forget to finish your journey (to save getting done for fare dodging)

I really dont understand this governments fixation with inviting bloody foreigners to come in and run our railways increasing costs to ensure they make a profit.

But as for Alliance no their record of getting services up and running isnt good but it certainally looks like they will put everything behind this scheme as everything is in place they are now funded and backed by Arriva , loads of electric locos and rolling stock soon to be available at minimal cost as no one else currently is showing any interest in them, they have not only Blackpool but Fylde and Wyre councils backing them as they are totally pissed off with Virgins broken promises and sham service but most importantly the facility to pick up at Preston and nick as many passengers from Virgin as they can carry. I.m sure people in Carlisle would be happy to know that they could get to London 6 times a day knowing that the cost would never be anymore than 90 quid on proper trains with a proper service on board and at stations [ Thats if they carry out their promise to return it to what it was on before Arriva started poking their noses in with their cost cutting shit].

What locomotives and coaches? Anything on WCML has to be 125mph and only tilting trains can do that,so its new build Pendlinos or nothing.
HS2 and WCML have been lumped in together as both be using Euston,both serving the same cities and because HS2 is being built to relieve the massive strain on WCML south of Crewe.

Daft question High Street as a novice but would it not have been better to connect HS1 to HS2 or are they doing that? I suppose i should prob google it as i assumed HS2 would continue on from the HS1 line.

But it wont need to be 125mph once HS2 opens will it because it wont be trying to win on speed it.ll be doing it on cost and what i read says that using mk4.s and class 92 locos of which there.ll be dozens available from next year [ not to mention the 91.s which they cant give away ] by reducing the number of stops [which south of Crewe they dont need anyway ] and hitting max speed along the straight bits they can make the paths work as they did with the London Midland service which goes nowhere near 125mph and certainly doest tilt.

No idea when they took over but due to engineering works I went Darlington to Kingscross earlier this year with them. First time I’d travelled on that line, one stop at York then right down. Only took just over 2 hours I think.

Always been about 3hrs from Newcastle.... Much faster than West Coast line ..just the getting to Darlo or Newcastle so may as well go from Carlisle if you live here...
(My other bit should say would want a week on the Costas not Vistas obviously)

Not a line that i.d ever used much but since i moved here i now have a choice of Virgin West Coast from either Preston or Manchester or Virgin East Coast from Leeds or Grand Central from Bradford.all of them have their pluses and minuses but the big advantage is you can usually get a good deal from one of them. Customer service is great or at least it was till Arriva started poking their nose in but after a survey into why people all of a sudden weren't happy they've now committed to returning to their old standards.But we.ll see wether they achieve it or not.

Well Virgin are keeping a small number to use on the East Coast for the next 5 years and Caledonian Sleeper have signed up to hire theres for the next 10 so they cant be that clapped out or slow.

Sleepers are max 80mph,heavy and high ETH load. 92’s are ideal for these. (In fact what they were built for!)
