I only found out about a year ago that is a virgin train is 30 mins late you get 1/2 your single fare back.
1 hour late and you get full single fare back.
2 hours late and you get full return back.
I get money back most times I go to Carlisle but could have claimed a load in the past when I didnt know.

"Rail passengers on the UK’s leading long-distance network face disruption and cancellations after Virgin Trains staff belonging to the RMT union voted to strike by a majority of 10 to one.
Train managers, catering staff and station teams working on the line from London Euston to Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow are demanding “pay justice”.
The dispute centres on a “buy-out” deal agreed with the train drivers’ union, ASLEF, in which the operator is adding £500 to pensionable salaries to settle a claim for a reduction in the working week.
The RMT general secretary, Mick Cash, said: “All our members are demanding is a suitable and equal offer to that given to drivers to buy out their claim for a reduction in the base working week.

Better the devil you know when you look at some of the [censored] running the other franchises i would say theres only a couple capable and i believe one of them is banned from bidding so would you really want the likes of Arriva anywhere near it because i wouldnt.
I think when it comes up for renewal it will be Virgin up against 3 others none of whom have a cat in hells chance of winning it.But it could be a whole new ball game if Alliance get all the paths they want and the stock to run them and then run it old style where the fares the fare no messing about and extract 3000 passengers a day from Virgin from Preston it.ll give Virgin somthing to think about.

Alliance have singularly failed to run anything they’ve ever proposed, a company of fantasists.
The bidders for West Coast have already been released- they had to team up with a partner that had experience of running high speed trains- Virgin teamed up with SNCF, as the next franchise will also run HS2.

And what a load of shite that is Surely the West Coast and HS2 should be in direct competition HS2 based on speed v West Coast based on low cost and operated by different companies.
I really dont understand this governments fixation with inviting bloody foreigners to come in and run our railways increasing costs to ensure they make a profit.
But as for Alliance no their record of getting services up and running isnt good but it certainally looks like they will put everything behind this scheme as everything is in place they are now funded and backed by Arriva , loads of electric locos and rolling stock soon to be available at minimal cost as no one else currently is showing any interest in them, they have not only Blackpool but Fylde and Wyre councils backing them as they are totally pissed off with Virgins broken promises and sham service but most importantly the facility to pick up at Preston and nick as many passengers from Virgin as they can carry. I.m sure people in Carlisle would be happy to know that they could get to London 6 times a day knowing that the cost would never be anymore than 90 quid on proper trains with a proper service on board and at stations [ Thats if they carry out their promise to return it to what it was on before Arriva started poking their noses in with their cost cutting shit].
The only fly in the ointment at the moment is the paths into Euston while the HS2 Rebuild is going on but i.m sure they.ll get round that somehow either there or somewhere else personally i dont think HS2 should be going anywhere near Euston there was hundreds of acres of contaminated land North of Kings Cross they could of used but it was sold off for next to nothing

More fool her, who would pay such an overpriced price...and what's this business class? You sure she didn't fly down Marko...... And would Dundee -"London" not be East Coast Line ending up Kings Cross...not Virgin

What locomotives and coaches? Anything on WCML has to be 125mph and only tilting trains can do that,so its new build Pendlinos or nothing.
HS2 and WCML have been lumped in together as both be using Euston, both serving the same cities and because HS2 is being built to relieve the massive strain on WCML south of Crewe.

I agree Seesaw. I usually get on at Penrith however we were travelling on a bank holiday Sunday and there were 2 legs by bus so travelling to Darlo then straight down seemed a better option.

Not a line that i.d ever used much but since i moved here i now have a choice of Virgin West Coast from either Preston or Manchester or Virgin East Coast from Leeds or Grand Central from Bradford.all of them have their pluses and minuses but the big advantage is you can usually get a good deal from one of them. Customer service is great or at least it was till Arriva started poking their nose in but after a survey into why people all of a sudden weren't happy they've now committed to returning to their old standards. But we.ll see wether they achieve it or not.
